Finally, I would like to thank the members of my family , Wi llard , Bo , Jason, and Leah for their constant support and encouragement . iv ABSTRACT This research involves a study of the imagery of war of six poet-soldiers : Diederich von dem Werder, Georg Greflinger , and Christian Brehme, from the time of the Thirty Years' War and Ewald Christian von Kleist , Johann George Scheffner , and Heinrich Wilhelm von Stamford from the time of the Prusso-Austrian Wars . The aims of the study were twofold -- to ascertain how these writers depict war through imagery in their poetic works, and to note changes in such imagery in the intervening century between the two periods of conflict. Attention was focused on certain categories of imagery , including the origins of war, the soldier's cause, nature, death , destruction and deprivation, leaders and heroes , the enemy , the common soldier, and the poet-soldier 's view of himself in war . The poet-soldiers of the Thirty Years' War era attribute the origin of war to a combination of fate and God 's punishment of a sinful people, whereas the eighteenth­ century poets point to certain defects inherent in man, such as envy , greed , and lust for power . War compared to destructive aspects of nature is a motif in both centuries, but the later poets also employed in their works images of peaceful nature as a contrast to the chaotic environment of war . The earlier poets express mainly physical deprivation due to war , while Kleist , Scheffner, and Stamford add a v component of deprivation of the spirit . Portraits of death in war become more personal and sentimentai in the poet­ soldiers of the later period , as does the very concept of the soldier. While hero worship of mil itary leaders is a component in the works from the Thirty Years ' War, the later poet-soldiers paint a disma l picture of leaders in general, reserving their praise for Frederick the Great. Werder and Greflinger depict a demonic enemy . Kleist , Scheffner and Stamford see the enemy as barbaric and less civilized than they , but do not depict him as evil. The early poet­ soldiers do not write about themselves , while the later poets tend to personalize their description of the soldier's life and cause . vi TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER PAGE 1. When the research was initially begun , it was with the prospect of writing

    CIVIL WAR OF ENGLAND The English Civil War happened in the middle 17th century. The term civil war is a war where the sides involved in the fighting are from the same country. At the centre, there was a struggle between King Charles I and the Parliament of England over how England should be ruled. The King wanted to rule without Parliament telling him what to do. At first Parliament wanted to reduce the King's power, but later it decided that the country did not need a king. King Charles's supporters were known as the Royalists, and were nicknamed "Cavaliers". Parliament's supporters were known as the Parliamentarians, and were nicknamed "Roundheads". From 1639 to 1653, there was fighting in England, Scotland and Ireland, three separate countries that were ruled by the same king. The fighting that took place in each of these countries broke out at different times and for different reasons. In England, it lasted from 1642 to 1651. Some people think of this as one big war, while others think of it as three separate wars: the First English Civil War (1642-46), the Second English Civil War (1648) and the Third English Civil War (1649-51). The wars are also sometimes known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, including the Bishops' Wars in Scotland in 1639 to 1640 and the Irish Rebellion from 1641 to 1653. The Parliamentarians won the war. Charles I was captured, put on trial and in 1649 he was executed. His son CharlesII then tried to take over the country, but lost and escaped abroad.

The Peace of Augsburg (1555) explicitly recognizes the legal existence of Lutheranism and stipulates the “religious freedom” of Imperial Estates, “cuius regio, eius religio” principle, and its exceptions. However, due to the lack of effective mechanism and measures to guarantee the compliance with the Peace of Augsburg (1555), its regulatory function can only be realized through “commitment”. The Peace of Augsburg (1555) is mainly formulated to pursue the peace and order of the Empire and also reflects the fundamental principle of compromise. However, the concepts such as “religious tolerance” and “right protection” contained therein are not original intention of the Peace of Augsburg (1555) or the subjective wishes of all parties thereto.     6 Rebellion and Catastrophe The Thirty Years’ War was the last great religious war in Europe, and the first Europe-wide conflict of balance-of-power politics. Beginning with the Bohemian rebellion in 1618, the war grew into a confrontation between the German Protestant princes and the Holy Roman Emperor, and finally became a contest between France and the Habsburgs’ two dynastic monarchies, involving practically all other powers. The war may be divided into four phases: the Bohemian-Palatinate War (1618– 23), the Danish War (1625–29), the Swedish War (1630–35), and the Franco-Swedish War (1635–48). When the war finally ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the treaties set the groundwork for the system of international relations still in effect today. The outcome of the war integrated the Bohemian crownlands more fully with the other Habsburg possessions in a family empire that aspired to maintain its position as one of the powers in the international state system. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in my thesis. 2 Abstract During the second half of the fourteenth century Jan Milí č of Krom ěř íž became an active and popular preacher in Prague. The sermons which he delivered focused primarily on themes of reform, and called for a renewal within the church. Despite a sustained popularity with the lay populace of Prague, Milí č faced opposition to his practice from many individual members of the city’s clergy. Eventually he was the subject of twelve articles of accusation sent to the papal court of Avignon. Because of the hostility which Milí č faced, historians have most often written of him as a precursor to the Hussites. As a result he has been identified as an anti-establishment rabble-rouser and it has been assumed that he conducted his career in opposition to the court of the Emperor Charles IV. This thesis, over four body chapters, examines the careers of both Milí č and Charles and argues that instead of being enemies, the two men shared an amicable relationship. The first chapter examines Milí č’s career and will prove that he was well-connected to Charles and several members of his court. It will also examine the most common reasons given to argue that Charles and Milí č were at odds, and disprove them.

Historical simulations illustrate the role of hindsight in studying the past. Students assume the role of historical figures and attempt to solve the kinds of problems their counterparts faced. Game techniques allow players to manipulate this model to explore decision-making alternatives and gather information.
