  • One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and Their Fans
One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Annie Lyons TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2020 __________________________________________ Renita Coleman Department of Journalism Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Hannah Lewis Department of Musicology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Annie Lyons Title: One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Supervising Professors: Renita Coleman, Ph.D. Hannah Lewis, Ph.D. Boy bands have long been disparaged in music journalism settings, largely in part to their close association with hordes of screaming teenage and prepubescent girls. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

Sick as My Secrets “We had it all, this love so strong. Now everything we had is gone. If you could read my mind, you’d know I’ve crossed that line…” Prologue The house was dark inside, except for the bright flashes from a TV that had been left on. I called his name, but the only other voice I heard was Ryan Seacrest’s, coming from the Times Square broadcast on TV. My heart pounded as I followed the sound into the living room, worried about what I was going to find there. In the eerie, flickering light, I saw him lying on the couch. One hand was hanging limply over the side. His eyes were closed, his mouth half open. In that instant, I knew he had to be dead. As I came closer to the couch, my eyes swept over the scene, taking in the two pill containers sitting on the coffee table, along with an open bottle of tequila. All the breath rushed out of me as I sank to my knees at his side, looking down at his body in dismay. “Oh god…” I whispered. “Why would you do this to yourself?” But that was a stupid question to ask. I already knew the answer. Of course I knew why, and in that moment, I realized it was as much my fault as it was his. *** Chapter 1 Howie You know that game Jenga? The one where you build a tower out of wooden blocks and try not to be the one who makes it fall? The guys and I used to play it on the tour bus, back in the days when we still shared the same bus.

  • Top Party Songs from the 90'S By: Nanette Pawelek with Holiday
Top Party Songs from the 90's By: Nanette Pawelek With holiday, New Year, and post New Year parties in full swing, flavorful music, especially from decades past, often weasel their way into the playlist. Imagine, you're socializing with friends, having a drink, enjoying some delightful party snacks, and suddenly, the relatively composed guests lift their arms and catapult their bodies into the air to Kris Kross's epic 90's song, "Jump." People that you would not imagine just "bust a move," as the rapper "Young MC" coined a year before the epic 90's began, and showcase their lyrical lip syncing talents they forgot they had. Heads bobble, and bodies crash up and down on the dance floor as the words, "Jump, jump/ The Mac Dad will make ya Jump Jump / The Daddy Mac will make ya Jump Jump / Kris Kross will make ya Jump Jump" seamlessly slide off the tips of their tongues into the equally enthusiastic crowd. The song comes to an unfortunate end, and you and your friends look at each other, smile, slightly proud and maybe even a little shocked, and think, "Those were the days." You laugh a little, and then return to the contemporary moment. While Kross's unforgettable "Jump" may prompt current audiences to lose themselves in a decade past, it's hard to forget how often 90's music inspired collective dancing and even uncanny fashion selections such as the illustrious "Hammer pants." These inventive, yet ironic re- appropriation of "harem" pants, were more than just fashion. They were a way of life and possessed a distinct attitude: carefree, agile, and truly "funky." MC Hammer lit up the stage with these carefully tapered at the ankle "parachute pants," as he relayed, "You can't touch this/ Yo, let me bust the funky lyrics/ You can't touch this/ Fresh new kicks, advance / You gotta like that, now, you know you wanna dance." Everyone was on board and wanted to dance.

PART I: FROM THE START Chapter 1 When he walked into the bar that night, Nick Carter’s heart was already broken. What am I doing here? he wondered as he made his way through the crowd, looking around at all the happy couples in costume, college kids who’d come to party, groups of women having a girls’ night out. I don’t belong here anymore. He hesitated and had almost turned to leave when he heard the bartender call out, “Hey, what can I get you?” With a sigh, Nick slumped down onto an empty stool. No one else even seemed to notice him; they were all engrossed in conversation, guys cracking jokes and girls giggling without a care in the world. Nick envied them. He’d never felt more alone. “We’ve got some spooky drink specials tonight,” the bartender added with a tight-lipped smile. Her face was made up like a Mexican sugar skull. Before he could order his usual beer, she slid a piece of bright orange paper across the polished wood bartop. Nick scanned the menu briefly, almost smiling at some of the creative cocktail names. Halloween had always been his favorite holiday. He wasn’t in a very festive mood, but being here at the bar was better than spending another night at home by himself, drinking vodka straight from the bottle. “How ‘bout a Vampire Slayer?” he said, the combination of vodka and tequila catching his eye. “Make it strong.” The bartender gave a nod. “You got it.” She poured equal parts of the two spirits into a shaker with a splash of lime juice and a scoop of ice.

The airwaves were being dominated by artists such as Britney Spears, Nelly, Blink 182, Destiny’s Child and many more. The huge idea of this era was the rise in boy bands and how impactful they’ve become with such a small amount of time. A boy band can be defined as a vocal group consisting of young male singers, usually in their teenage years or in their early twenties who sing a majority of love songs, have very insync and amazing choreographed dance moves, no physical instruments being played by the members of the band, a huge fan base (usually younger girls), lastly, a couple of heartthrobs to make the fans go crazy.

  • Brian Littrell & Kevin Richardson
2015 Induction Class Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson are leading members of one of the best-selling vocal groups in the history of the music industry. Their group, The Backstreet Boys, have sold over 130 million albums to date, and are one of only two groups ever, to see their release of seven consecutive albums reach the top 10 of the Billboard’s Top 200. Multiple awards, sold out concerts and millions of albums sold have made these two young men from Kentucky, international music superstars! Cousins Brian and Kevin grew up in Central Kentucky and sang together in local church choirs and festivals; the two formed a strong bond and a lasting friendship at a young age. Brian Thomas Littrell was born in Lexington, Kentucky on February 20, 1975. He began singing publicly at Porter Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington and attended Tates Creek High School. Kevin Scott Richardson is the youngest of three brothers and was born October 3, 1971, also in Lexington. His family moved to Irvine, Kentucky where Kevin played football and began performing in school plays. He graduated from Estill County High School. In 1990, Kevin moved to Orlando, Florida and worked as the cast member “Aladdin” at Walt Disney World. While there, Richardson answered an ad in the Orlando Sentinel, auditioned and was selected to be a part of a new area boy-band. In need of an additional singer to fill out the group, Kevin encouraged a call to his cousin Brian in Kentucky for an audition. Brian was a junior in high school at the time and was called out of a math class when the offer to join the band was made.
