Page 2, Q3. The biggest advantage of the current traditional calendar with a lengthy summer break is: 1 It allows children to be children, to enjoy pursuits outside the academic realm. It Nov 7, 2012 5:22 AM allows family to spend quality time together, during a time in Bloomington that is calmer, quieter without the extra traffic from I.U. 2 It provides students the opportunity to participate in extended and focused Nov 7, 2012 5:17 AM activities that support their physical and intellectual well-being. 3 I really don't know what the advantage is, it's just the way things have always Nov 7, 2012 5:02 AM been done. 4 not sure there is an advantage Nov 6, 2012 7:00 PM 5 Allows for travel with AAU basketball and opportunities to visit colleges through Nov 6, 2012 6:32 PM elite camps and campus visits 6 I don't see any advantage of the current traditional calendar. Nov 6, 2012 6:09 PM 7 we don't live in the 1800's, we should not have a long summer break, it would be Nov 6, 2012 5:59 PM better to have more breaks throughout the year! 8 All of the above! Nov 6, 2012 4:28 PM 9 they need the summer break for summer activities 4H and others Nov 6, 2012 4:05 PM 10 All of these are extremely/equally important to me Nov 6, 2012 3:55 PM 11 I think the top 3 choices are all big advantages. If staff were paid more they Nov 6, 2012 3:06 PM wouldn't need to have summer jobs though. 12 It allows summer camp Nov 6, 2012 1:50 PM 13 It provides a lengthy enough break to allow students to participate in many Nov 6, 2012 1:45 PM activities, such as camps, travel and work. 14 It gives families more time together for summer vacations. Nov 6, 2012 1:29 PM 15 It is closely/conveniently aligned with the IU calendar AND the first semester Nov 6, 2012 1:15 PM ends prior to winter break/and the new year. 16 i feel i get to plan on more time with my kids. putting them in school was a huge Nov 6, 2012 1:06 PM step for all of us and i don't see them nearly as mich now. 17 dont really feel there are any Nov 6, 2012 12:27 PM 18 All of the aboveboard Nov 6, 2012 11:33 AM 19 Can visit their relatives in another country Nov 6, 2012 11:31 AM 20 I don't think there is an advantage Nov 6, 2012 11:05 AM 21 None really. Nov 6, 2012 11:05 AM 22 ALLOWS FOR FAMILY VACATIONS OVER THE EXTENDED BREAK Nov 6, 2012 11:04 AM 7 of 200 Page 2, Q3. The biggest advantage of the current traditional calendar with a lengthy summer break is: 23 All of the above! Nov 6, 2012 11:00 AM 24 childcare for summer is easier because of camps, etc that don't work for shorter Nov 6, 2012 10:33 AM breaks 25 Not sure there is one Nov 6, 2012 10:33 AM 26 im fine with the way it is Nov 6, 2012 10:14 AM 27 All of these are big advantages, it is also a time for students/staff to have Nov 6, 2012 10:10 AM extended experiences. 28 All of the above, with the possible exception of "first semester ends..." Nov 6, 2012 10:02 AM 29 no advantage Nov 6, 2012 9:59 AM 30 I do not see any advantage Nov 6, 2012 9:51 AM 31 they can visit family members who lives out of country Nov 6, 2012 9:17 AM 32 Absolutely all the above and many more Nov 6, 2012 9:15 AM 33 longer summer breaks give more time for relationship building, as well as more Nov 6, 2012 9:00 AM time for other kinds of learning not taught in schools. 34 No advantage Nov 6, 2012 8:58 AM 35 convenient with the IU calendar, a lengthy summer break provides a great Nov 6, 2012 8:20 AM opportunity for students to travel the world at a choice season and learn about global perspectives, as well as to stay physically active in good weather, and explore nature etc that is not opportune during cold weather months 36 Consider all of the options selected - Alignment with IU calendar, Nov 6, 2012 7:24 AM rest/rejuvenation, summer jobs, and ending the first semester before winter break 37 It's easier to arrange child care for children during the summer rather than Nov 6, 2012 7:13 AM various times throughout the year. 38 Summer camps are convenient for working parents. Taking out the summer Nov 6, 2012 7:01 AM break will make it tough to find sitters/activities that fill those short breaks. 39 Provides students with an extended break Nov 6, 2012 6:29 AM 40 swimming pools in indiana lol Nov 6, 2012 4:40 AM 41 the break is too long Nov 6, 2012 3:17 AM 42 available to travel abroad during summer break. Nov 6, 2012 2:19 AM 43 I can find care for the entire summer and not worry as much through the school Nov 5, 2012 6:53 PM year about finding childcare 44 no advantage just used to the routine schedule Nov 5, 2012 5:50 PM 8 of 200 Page 2, Q3. The biggest advantage of the current traditional calendar with a lengthy summer break is: 45 Both the alignment with IU and additional work in summer. Nov 5, 2012 5:47 PM 46 It allows my child time to go summer camp which he looks forward to every Nov 5, 2012 5:44 PM summer. 47 My children are in 4-h and show livestock, a shorter summer break doesnt work Nov 5, 2012 5:15 PM for this 48 Both answers 2 & 3. Pay teachers more if you don't want us getting 2nd jobs. Nov 5, 2012 5:05 PM ALready hard enough with the long day and no planning. I am at work most days 10 hours!!! 49 I do not see any advantage Nov 5, 2012 4:58 PM 50 It enhances social skills and promotes family connections. Nov 5, 2012 4:13 PM 51 it provides an opportunity to go to summer camp Nov 5, 2012 3:58 PM 52 I don't if any of the above make sense or there any advantage either way. Nov 5, 2012 3:27 PM 53 It does provide kids with a rest and kids that do extra curricular activities can Nov 5, 2012 2:54 PM participate in camps etc 54 It provides younger, and older students and staff an opportunity to volunteer, Nov 5, 2012 1:32 PM work, and experience activities that require the extra weeks that the calendar currently offers. 55 There are several reasons why it works best for our family: it is closely aligned Nov 5, 2012 1:20 PM with the IU calender, and it provides an extended break, which I do feel is necessary. On top of this, for us, that break means my daughter can spend most of the summer visiting her father, who lives in another state. This is easier on us than transporting her back and forth at the end of every nine weeks so that he can spend his time with her. 56 None Nov 5, 2012 1:08 PM 57 No advantage to this calendar...too long for kids to be away from school. Out Nov 5, 2012 1:05 PM most needy students are without education and safety for this long summer break. 58 Summer camps are available. Good childcare options are hard to find if you Nov 5, 2012 1:00 PM follow the Project School model. 59 all of the above Nov 5, 2012 12:57 PM 60 I think that if we maintained our current traditional calendar, students and staff Nov 5, 2012 12:55 PM would be provided with time to spend with family members (especially those who live outside of the country), time to engage in prior commitments, as well as time to prepare well for the new school year. 61 Work and parenting schedules don't allow and it is a good time for kids to get Nov 5, 2012 12:52 PM involved in other activities/jobs 62 Good time to go on family vacation Nov 5, 2012 12:32 PM 9 of 200 Page 2, Q3. The biggest advantage of the current traditional calendar with a lengthy summer break is: 63 This answer is not as simple as one answer. The sumer break allows students to Nov 5, 2012 12:21 PM pursue other interests outside of what the school offers. My children have used the summer to travel with bands, record albums, work for wildlife centers, volunteer, travel with IU pre-college harp program to Warsaw for master classes, attend the Heron School of Art for summer sessions, travel to Europe attend Cornell Summer School. I would be very disappointed is the school calendar changed as I feel that my children receive a more well rounded education by having time to pursue other areas of interest that the school can not offer. 64 summer travel sporting events Nov 5, 2012 12:10 PM 65 tradition. We've always done it that way.
