    GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

Miller And approved by ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Evander’s Mother: Gender, Antiquity, and Authorship in Early Modern England By BRIAN JOHN PIETRAS Dissertation Director: Jacqueline T. Miller This dissertation traces how the Renaissance rediscovery of ancient women writers led to the emergence of new theories and practices of English vernacular authorship. In the sixteenth century, Greco-Roman women writers became famous for writings that were largely fragmentary, of dubious origin, or entirely lost. Indeed, a number of these purported female authors—such as Carmentis, the mother of Evander in the Aeneid— were purely legendary. My dissertation argues, however, that this lack of surviving texts was precisely what made ancient women so useful to early moderns. Vested with the prestige of classical antiquity but untethered from any concrete body of writing, ancient female authors functioned as what I call a “canon without a corpus” in Renaissance England. The first three chapters of Evander’s Mother show how sixteenth-century male writers appropriated figures from this now-forgotten female canon to decisively reshape inherited models of authorship: how Thomas Elyot employed the rebellious historian Zenobia to defy the humanist emphasis on classical imitation; how John Donne and John Fletcher experimented with non-Petrarchan forms of love lyric through fantasies of Sappho; and how William Shakespeare and Edmund Spenser reworked the role of the divinely inspired poet by evoking legendary female prophets known as the sibyls.

    Robin White Goldsmiths College, University of London Thesis for the Degree of Ph.D., 2014 Louis Riel, Justice, and Métis Self-Identification: Literary Politics for Survival in the Evolution of Canadian Nationhood 1 I, Robin White, declare this thesis to be entirely my own original work. 2 Abstract of Thesis This thesis explores Métis identity in the context of the ambiguous nature of the Canadian national identity, and in particular, how the Louis Riel ‘Rebellions’ of 1869- 70 and 1885, continue to resonate in contemporary Métis literature. While it is the case that the Métis have self-identified within their own communities since the seventeenth century, it is also the case that the legal definition and recognition of the Métis were not realized until 1982. Indeed, the fine points of law in the Canadian Constitution are still in dispute, not least because the Métis were not included in the initial signing of treaties with the Dominion of Canada. For the purposes of this thesis, it is first necessary to engage in a thorough examination of historical accounts of the resistance of the Métis against expansionist encroachment of the Dominion of Canada in the Northwest in order to trace the source and evolution of contemporary Métis literature. I consider the ways in which the literary texts of Métis authors confront racial and cultural prejudice that are the direct result of Constitutional law, charters of rights, legislation in the judicial system, and the eleven Confederation numbered treaties, drafted before, during and after the Riel Resistances. The introductory and first chapters include contemporary Métis historical and legal academic analyses of the ‘Rebellions’ and an exploration of how the Government of Canada’s response in 1885 to the Métis uprising continues to inform its legal positions concerning Métis land rights and self-identification, while striving to maintain an international reputation as politically, and ethically, just.

    Media Across the African Diaspora This volume gathers scholarship from varying disciplinary perspectives to explore media owned or created by members of the African diaspora, examine its relationship with diasporic audiences, and consider its im- pact on mainstream culture in general. Contributors highlight creations and contributions of people of the African diaspora, the interconnections of Black American and African-centered media, and the experiences of audiences and users across the African diaspora, positioning members of the Black and African Diaspora as subjects of their own narratives, ac- tive participants and creators. It argues that these diverse expressions of Christian faith-fuelled abundance can be understood as a movement, for they stem from a cohesive set of shared understandings. First, the movement centered on Faith. It conceived of faith as an “activator,” a power given to believers that bound and loosed spiritual forces and turned the spoken word into reality. Second and third respectively, the movement depicted faith as palpably demonstrated in wealth and health. It could be measured in both in the wallet—one’s personal wealth—and in the body—one’s personal health—making material reality the measure of the success of immaterial faith.
