Cafe Luxembourg Spui 24, 1012 XA Amsterdam 020-6206264 | Cafe@Luxembourg.Nl UNE HISTOIRE D’AMOUR MENU Cafe Luxembourg Spui 24, 1012 XA Amsterdam 020-6206264 www.luxembourg.nl | [email protected] UNE HISTOIRE D’AMOUR “One of the world’s great cafés” – New York Times “Un grand café brun par excellence” – Le Figaro “Spacious, elegant and unhurried” – The Independant THE CITY Amsterdam has a turbulent history of immensely rich to penniless and visa versa. In the 17th century Amsterdam was the most powerful city in the world. In the Brouwersgracht and Zeedijk area pubs started to appear: het Aepjen, de Heffer, Karpershoek…. The Amsterdam pubs are legendary throughout the world and they formed a social fabric of the city with its many passing sailors, immigrants from France, Italy, Portugal and Eastern Europe. The city also had social services quite early on in its history: het Burgerweeshuis (the Civil orphanage) in 1580, which is currently the Amsterdam Museum and a true home for the elderly in 1681 (Amstelhof – which is now the Hermitage Museum). THE SPUI The Spui was the south border of Amsterdam until 1425. It had a ‘spui’ lock to transfer the access water from the canals to the outside waters and stop floods from coming in. Before the construction of the canals the Spui was reclaimed or dried out as they say in Dutch. But it wasn’t ‘dried out’ for long: in 1670 our neighbour café Hoppe was opened….. Furthermore the Spui is the home of the best bookstore (Atheneum), the Begijnhof and the University of Amsterdam (Maagdenhuis in the year 1787, originally a catholic orphanage for girls). CAFÉ LUXEMBOURG Café Luxembourg was an enhancement to the Spui in the eighties and one of the first true Grand Cafés of Amsterdam. Architects Jan Marc van Eendenburg (†) and Aart Fastenau have made it a beautiful spot. Situated at the Spui all the way through to the Singel. The atmosphere, the style and the quality as justly given it a place on the shortlist of world cafés. Café Luxembourg is known for its croquettes from the Dutch company Holtkamp, the conservatory in which you watch Amsterdam passing by and the lively atmosphere in the classic Grand Café. • Amsterdam – Art Nouveau Walking Tour City Center
AMSTERDAM ART NOUVEAU TOUR CITY CENTER The Canal houses are not the only gems in the city center. This area holds great art nouveau architecture, the only downside is that it is scattered throughout the area. This walk will thus require some more walking to get from sight to sight, but don’t worry, we will show you some other interesting sights along the way. Start your walk at the Spui square and have a look at the magnificent building of the Athenaeum bookshop that stems from 1904. Look at the flowing lines in the windows designed by L.G. Mohrmann. Continue to the Seafoord bar at the Spui 15, this building was designed by G.A. van Arkel in 1895 for the photographer M. Büttinghausen. Büttinghausen had his atelier on the top two floors and his name is still written on the facade. The design was send to the world symposium in Paris in 1900 where it was rewarded with a bronze medal in the architecture competition. Turn around and cross the square. Enter the door on the Spui on the right hand side of the bookshop. This door will lead you to the Begijnhof. Take a short sidestep in this tour to admire this hidden village that stems from around 1360 and was housed only by unmarried women. Have a look at the last preserved wooden houses and visit the church if you can. To continue the tour, walk via the Begijnhof and the gedempte Begijnensloot to the Sint Luciensteeg. Take a left into the Sint Luciensteeg and cross the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal untill you get to the Spuistraat.

  • Amsterdam, Netherlands Overview Introduction
Amsterdam, Netherlands Overview Introduction Tell anyone you're going to Amsterdam and there's a fair chance they'll either sigh with envy or give you a sly nod. Amsterdam's reputation for tolerance laced with sin precedes it, but equally renowned are its scenic and cultural attractions. Amsterdam hotels are known for their cleanliness and hospitality, its restaurants offer world cuisine, and along the city streets is a shopper's paradise. Most visitors fall in love with the city and return again and again. Amsterdam is nourished by a wealth of museums, concert halls, and avant-garde theater and dance venues. Its relaxed and tolerant attitudes draw those looking for a creative, anything-goes atmosphere. Large numbers of beautiful tree-lined canals are bordered by streets with rows of narrow, gabled houses and 17th-century warehouses, making Amsterdam an architectural treasure trove. Amsterdam is much smaller in population (but no less interesting) than many European capitals. As a result, much of the city center can be comfortably explored on foot—or, if you want to look like a true local, by bicycle. Highlights Sights—The Westerkerk (West Church) on the Prinsengracht and the spectacular view from its tower; gabled mansions on the 17th-century canal ring inside the Singelgracht; the Anne Frank Huis; the Red Light District; Amsterdam-Noord. Museums—Rembrandts at the Rijksmuseum; the Van Gogh Museum; the Stedelijk Museum. Memorable Meals—Smoked eel at Haesje Claes; french fries with mayonnaise or peanut-butter sauce from the rear end of the Albert Cuyp Markt; rijsttafel at Tempo Doeloe; salted or pickled herring from one of the fish stands along the canals; traditional Dutch fare at Moeders; international dishes from Food Hallen.

In the Amsterdam Museum goudenkoets.nl Top: The Golden Coach in the courtyard of the Royal Stables; Photo: Arthur van der Vlies Bottom: Details side panel Tribute from the Kingdom; Photo: René Gerritsen THE GOLDEN COACH The Golden Coach is on display at the Amsterdam Museum! This exhibition is the first time the public will see the coach since major restoration began in 2015. Amsterdam residents gifted the Golden Coach to young Queen Wilhelmina for her inauguration in 1898. Now it’s returning to Amsterdam, the city where it all began. From 18 June 2021 to 27 February 2022. This exhibit explores the rich history of the Golden Coach. Opinions on the coach have always been wide-ranging, even before it was built, and that’s still true today. Some people see it as a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, while others have criticised it. This exhibition creates space for the full spectrum of opinions on the coach and its history. The Golden Coach is the centrepiece of this extensive, multi-faceted exhibition. We’ll take a look at all sides of the coach - literally and figuratively – so it’s an exhibition everyone can enjoy. The museum has also put together a comprehensive public programme, an educational programme, and a research project around the coach. THE EXHIBITION The Golden Coach will be put on display in the spacious courtyard. The coach had to be hoisted over the building to get it in place. In six spacious halls in the Amsterdam Museum, we’ll dive into different stories from different perspectives: rich, but also painful stories, stories of nostalgia and craftsmanship, stories about the restoration, symbolism, and perceptions surrounding the coach.
