In the 17th century Amsterdam was the most powerful city in the world. In the Brouwersgracht and Zeedijk area pubs started to appear: het Aepjen, de Heffer, Karpershoek…. The Amsterdam pubs are legendary throughout the world and they formed a social fabric of the city with its many passing sailors, immigrants from France, Italy, Portugal and Eastern Europe. The city also had social services quite early on in its history: het Burgerweeshuis (the Civil orphanage) in 1580, which is currently the Amsterdam Museum and a true home for the elderly in 1681 (Amstelhof – which is now the Hermitage Museum). THE SPUI The Spui was the south border of Amsterdam until 1425. It had a ‘spui’ lock to transfer the access water from the canals to the outside waters and stop floods from coming in. Before the construction of the canals the Spui was reclaimed or dried out as they say in Dutch. But it wasn’t ‘dried out’ for long: in 1670 our neighbour café Hoppe was opened….. Furthermore the Spui is the home of the best bookstore (Atheneum), the Begijnhof and the University of Amsterdam (Maagdenhuis in the year 1787, originally a catholic orphanage for girls). CAFÉ LUXEMBOURG Café Luxembourg was an enhancement to the Spui in the eighties and one of the first true Grand Cafés of Amsterdam. Architects Jan Marc van Eendenburg (†) and Aart Fastenau have made it a beautiful spot. Situated at the Spui all the way through to the Singel. The atmosphere, the style and the quality as justly given it a place on the shortlist of world cafés. Café Luxembourg is known for its croquettes from the Dutch company Holtkamp, the conservatory in which you watch Amsterdam passing by and the lively atmosphere in the classic Grand Café.
