Received: 27 February 2013; in revised form: 11 April 2013 / Accepted: 24 April 2013 / Published: 6 May 2013 Abstract: This paper presents current research on Danish municipalities’ use of Energy Service Companies (ESCO) as a way to improve the standard of public buildings and to increase energy efficiency. In recent years more and more municipalities have used ESCO-contracts to retrofit existing public buildings, and to make them more energy efficient. At the moment 30 municipalities (of the 98 municipalities in Denmark) are involved in, or preparing, ESCO contracts. Nevertheless, ESCO-contracting still faces many challenges on the Danish market, as there is a widespread skepticism towards the concept amongst many stakeholders. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the various experience gained so far by municipalities use of ESCO-contracting, the different approached to ESCO-contracting being used in practice, as well as the different viewpoints drivers and barriers behind the development. -

EUR Kastrup Airport The Middelgrunden Wind Farm is situated a few kilometres away from the centre of Copenhagen. The offshore turbines are connected by cable to the transformer at the Amager power plant 3.5 km away. Kongedybet Hollænderdybet Middelgrunden Saltholm Flak 2 From Idea to Reality The idea of the Middelgrunden wind project was born in a group of visionary people in Copenhagen already in 1993. However it took seven years and a lot of work before the first cooperatively owned offshore wind farm became a reality. Today the 40 MW wind farm with twenty modern 2 MW wind turbines developed by the Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Cooperative and Copenhagen Energy Wind is producing electricity for more than 40,000 households in Copenhagen. In 1996 the local association Copenhagen Environment and Energy Office took the initiative of forming a working group for placing turbines on the Middelgrunden shoal and a proposal with 27 turbines was presented to the public. At that time the Danish Energy Authority had mapped the Middelgrunden shoal as a potential site for wind development, but it was not given high priority by the civil servants and the power utility. -

Press Release 09 August 2021 Powering ahead in the UK: Siemens Gamesa to double offshore blade facility - Successful offshore blade factory in Hull, England to be expanded by more than 41,000 square meters; remains largest offshore wind manufacturing facility in the UK - Investment of £186 million will enable manufacturing of next-generation blades in 2023 - 200 new direct jobs to be added - Siemens Gamesa continues to be major driver of economic growth story in region; over 1,500 offshore wind turbine blades produced in Hull since opening in 2016 Siemens Gamesa, the world’s leader in the offshore wind industry, will expand its successful offshore blade factory in Hull, England by 41,600 square meters, more than doubling the size of the manufacturing facilities. The expansion represents an investment of £186 million and is planned to be completed in 2023. Manufacturing of next-generation offshore wind turbine blades will be enabled at the largest offshore wind manufacturing facility in the UK. It will grow to 77,600 square meters and add 200 additional direct jobs to the approximately 1,000 person-workforce already in place. “Since our offshore blade factory opened in Hull in 2016, Siemens Gamesa has proudly served as the catalyst for the powerful growth the area has seen. The Journal of Transdisciplinary Environmental Studies vol. 12, no. 2, 2013 Public Archives and other Sources for Surveying of Dumpsites and Polluting Enterprises before 1950 Anne-Sofie Fleischer Michaelsen,Department of Environmental, Social and Spatial Change, Roskilde University, Denmark E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: In Denmark, the local environmental authorities have had an obligation to survey areas for soil contamination since the early 1980s. Through the years, detecting and locating old dumpsites and gathering historical information on them have been very dependent on old aerial photographs. As a result, the environmental authorities only have little knowledge of dumpsites operating before the mid-1950s. This study describes the utility of various historical sources for surveying of old dumpsites in the former Ballerup-Maaløv Municipality near Copenhagen. The minute books of the Council and the Health Commission in the municipality were used. In order to locate two dumpsites mentioned in the minute books and gather information on them, the fol- lowing additional sources were used: Old census papers, index cards from tax assessments of real property, income tax returns, writings from local history societies on the former villages, recorded memories told by senior citizens and jubilee publications from homeowners’ associations together with old cadastral maps, old topographical maps, and old aerial photographs plus a comparison of terrain heights in a topographical military map from 1900 and the Danish Elevation Model from 2005-2007. The minute books of the Council and the Health Commission contain information on 31 dumpsites and 15 possible dumpsites of very different characteristics. Only a few of the dumpsites were already known by the local environmental authorities. -
