Among the innumerable risings from 1796 to 1814 which swept through Italy and Europe occupied by Bonaparte, and which expressed the rejection by the people of the false principles of the French Revolution, imposed by bayonets, the insurrection of Verona was certainly the most important in Italy, after the Saint Faith’s Crusade in 1799, by which Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo of Calabria and the farmers of the south regained a whole Kingdom for the Bourbons of Naples. 1. Verona and the Serenissima Republic before the Revolution The Revolutionary France, drunk with the massacres of the Terror, ventured into a series of wars against the other European powers after killing the legitimate sovereign, Louis XVI, exterminating his family, causing the death of the Dauphin at the age of ten in the Temple Tower jail, demolishing the monarchy, persecuting worship and the Catholic religion. The revolutionary hordes, led by the darkest anticlerical sects, above all the Masons, were anxious to export hatred against the Church all over the world and upset the traditional sacred Institutions both civil and religious to which the people were deeply attached. The Italian States and the aristocratic Republic of Venice were then unfortunately experiencing a sad moral decline: a large part of the patrician ship, a shadow of that which had faced and beaten the Turks so many times, was infiltrated by the libertarian and libertine principles of the French Revolution.

  • Background to Italy in the Time of Rosmini (1797 – 1855) C
A Background to Italy in the time of Rosmini (1797 – 1855) c. 1790 - 1855 Introduction Rosmini lived through an extremely turbulent period of European history. Through all of his early years, until he was eighteen (Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo a few days short of his eighteenth birthday), the continent was riven by wars which had their origins in the bloody, traumatic and epoch making events surrounding the French revolution and its consequences. Governments fell with bewildering regularity, more often than not bloodily, whilst constitutions, both republican and monarchical, were swept away and then often reverted. In this respect hardly a political unit in western and central Europe – city state, prince state, bishop state, empire, kingdom or republic – was unaffected. The sole exception was Great Britain, and even here Ireland was made part of the Union in 1800 and the novelty of income tax was introduced. Warfare was the norm, and although it bore little relationship to the ‘total wars’ of the twentieth century, it affected all classes and all areas to a greater or lesser extent. These events shattered pre-existing ideas – in a more brutal and physical form than the intellectual impact of the Enlightenment of the second half of the eighteenth century. The cost and impact of war speeded up the industrialisation of the continent, though the biggest contributor to this, the arrival of the railways, did not have a significant impact in Italy until after Rosmini had died. Italy It is essential to appreciate that Rosmini’s Italy was very different from todays. The Austrian Foreign Minister and later Chancellor in the post-Napoleonic era, Metternich, is reported to have said in 1847 that, Italy was a geographic expression.

Blanchard, B.A., MSt. A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2018 ABSTRACT EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY FORERUNNERS OF VATICAN II: EARLY MODERN CATHOLIC REFORM AND THE SYNOD OF PISTOIA Shaun L. Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II.

CAIANI University of Kent E-mail: [email protected] The concile national of was one of the greatest flashpoints in the struggle that pitted the Napoleonic Empire against the papacy. This episode, which deserves to be situated within more recent historiographical trends, reveals much about the nature of Napoleonic imperialism and the Church’s distrust for the power of the state. This article puts forward the view that the failure of the concile national was not strategic but tactical. Several bishops were frustrated with the pope’s recalcitrance over episcopal investiture and fearful of schism. But their initial openness to neo-conciliarism turned to hostility when confronted with the state’s intolerance. he most unintended outcome of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic decades was the strengthening of the papacy and its Ultramontane ideology. Of all the forces that resisted French ‘cultural imperial- T’ ism the most successful and relentless in its refusal to acquiesce was the Church of Rome. This phenomenon, which Michael Broers has called the ‘War against God’, reached a significant crisis point in . On the surface it seemed as if the Napoleonic behemoth had conquered Europe and now commanded universal obedience.

  • Introduction
Introduction The Other Voice of Eleonora Fonseca Pimentel Eleonora Fonseca Pimentel (1752–1799) was the first Italian woman to write overtly about politics. Descended on both sides from Portuguese aristocrats, she became the chief journalist and opinion maker of the Neapolitan Jacobin Republic of 1799, and one of its most outspoken, imaginative and hard-hitting political commentators. Her prominence was acknowledged by the returning monarchical regime, when they included her among the Jacobins who were put to death by hanging after the Republic was overturned. Her political involvement dated back to the period of sovereign-led enlight- ened reforms, which she supported in a series of essays on political and economic matters. She had been a writer all her adult life, producing poetry from a very young age, and was admitted into membership of the prestigious poetic academy Arcadia in 1768, when she was just sixteen. For the next twenty years, experienc- ing marriage, motherhood, and the wrenching loss of her one child, she labored prodigiously, writing letters, essays, and verse, even as the autocratic Neapolitan state evolved through a series of political reforms. By the 1790s, she was a full- fledged Jacobin, who saw revolutionary politics as the only possible road to the future. Her fiery devotion to that cause is evident in the pages of the Monitore Napoletano (Neapolitan Monitor), the biweekly newspaper she wrote and pub- lished, recording the events of the short-lived Neapolitan Republic of January to June, 1799. Fonseca Pimentel is a tantalizing figure, presenting contradictory images. As a poet she conforms to the canon of women’s writing in eighteenth-century Italy, poetry being the genre most frequented by women, regardless of their other writings.

Theorica y Practica de Comer- cio y de Marina was published in Madrid for the first time by Gerónimo de Uztáriz around 1725. It was translated into English and published in Lon- don in 1751. Clasicos del Pensamiento Español had not include in his collec- tion up to now Uztariz’s Theorica. Pedro Schwartz and Alfonso Sánchez Hormigo have decided to include Uztariz’s Theorica but in his English ver- sion. I think the international reader will appreciate. This is the translation that Adam Smith read and had in his library. The whole eighteenth century span between the historical events lived by the author and those linked to the years when the translations of the Theorica into English, French and Italian were published. I start my introduction analysing the contents of the Peace and Trade Treaties signed between the Spanish Crown and Great Britain at Utrecht in 1713. I conclude with Godoy receiving the copies of the Italian translations in 1794, done by a Spanish ex-Jesuit, who was working in Rome for Cardi- nal Ruffo, Pius VI’s General Treasurer.

Eighteenth-century Neapolitan intellectuals recognized her passion for learning and her poetic talent and welcomed her into their salons and academies at a very early age. Even the Bourbon monarchs of the Kingdom of Naples were impressed by her skill and appointed her as court librarian. Pimentel was able to infiltrate the masculine world of learning due the unique circumstances of the Italian Enlightenment, which was more open to permitting exceptional women an advanced education, and it allowed them to pursue their studies further than any other women of the eighteenth century outside of the Italian peninsula.
