The song “ihop” is a surrealistic state of affairs, that utterly calls into question the sanity of Dean Wareham, while “Fuzzy Wuzzy” is about exactly what it appears to be, a young man longing for the one thing young men long for in women; and both can be found on Luna’s Pup Tent release. However, “Words Without Wrinkles” will not show up until the release of “The Days Of Our Nights,” giving the listener both a taste of, and a step into the future. 1 Funding for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program NEA Jazz Master interview was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. CLARK TERRY NEA Jazz Master (1991) Interviewee: Clark Terry (December 14, 1920 – February 21, 2015) Interviewer: William Brower Date: June 15 and 22, 1999 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution Description: Transcript, 150 pp. Transcriber’s note: Evidently there was no recording engineer available for the Clark Terry interview, and the interviewer, William Brower, handled the record process by himself. He had some technical problems. In the interview of June 15, 1999, one of the two channels is shorted out and emits nothing but a buzz, disrupting the entire session; this problem is exacerbated, affecting both channels, in the last two hours of this session. Brower acknowledges these problems at the beginning of the interview that took place one week later, on June 22, 1999. This later session has an excellent stereophonic sound. Terry: Saw a fellow sitting there, standing on a rock. He was driving around the corner, in the middle of the block. Is that close enough? Brower: Okay. We’re going to try this again. This is Bill Brower, talking with Mr. Clark Terry on June 15th for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Project, and we were getting background on the Terry family, and I’m going to ask if you would, to repeat the things that you told me about your parents’ background. For additional information contact the Archives Center at 202.633.3270 or [email protected] 2 Terry: My mother’s name was Mary Scott.

  • Indie-Rock Favorite Opens a Summer of Music at MASS Moca
For Immediate Release 13 April 2016 Contact: Jodi Joseph Director of Communications 413.664.4481 x8113 [email protected] Luna Indie-rock favorite opens a summer of music at MASS MoCA NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS — Storied indie rock quartet Luna — led by Dean Wareham, seen most recently at MASS MoCA as one-half of Dean & Britta — returns after a 10-year hiatus. With its 1999-era lineup (Wareham, Britta Phillips, Sean Eden, and Lee Wall), the band sounds as strong as ever and is back with a sweet vengeance to open our summer season on Saturday, May 28, at 8pm, in the Hunter Center. Described as “one of indie rock’s most beloved live acts” by Rolling Stone, Luna pairs poignant songwriting with wistful, weaving electric guitar riffs and chugging bass lines — ’90s nostalgic pop-rock at its best. Following the breakup of Wareham’s band Galaxie 500, Luna was formed in New York in 1991 by Wareham with Stanley Demeski of The Feelies and Justin Harwood of The Chills. After releasing its debut album Lunapark in 1993, the band underwent a handful of lineup changes throughout the decade — Sean Eden joined in 1994, Lee Wall took Demeski’s place on drums in 1997, and Britta Phillips replaced Harwood on bass in 2000. The group still produced five studio albums amidst all the changes: Bewitched (1994), Penthouse (1995), Pup Tent (1997), The Days of Our Nights (1999), and Romantica (2002). In 2011, Rolling Stone named Penthouse #99 on its “100 Best Albums of the Nineties.” Attracting an adoring fan base over the years, Luna released its final album, Rendezvous, in 2005, after playing a final concert that February at Manhattan’s Bowery Ballroom and going on an indefinite hiatus.
