Southport Sharks JAFC News Newsletter Date: Parking Reminders:

For the safety of our kids there is no parking in the turnaround at the end of the bitumen road 20th April 2015 around the main oval (near the canteen), this policy is in place at all times – during training and games. Security from the Main Club will be closely monitoring this during 2014 and offending ve- hicles will be towed at the owners expense. This area is to be kept clear for ambulances. Volume 6, Issue 3 The parking area next to the Groundsman’s Shed and the Club Office is for the use of committee members and ground staff only. Last year, the groundsman was unable to perform some of his Pg. 3 duties as he was unable to access some of his equipment due to vehicles parked in this area and the owners could not be located.

The gate for the gravel road coming down past the Village Green will be kept closed at all times. With the expansion of our player numbers the Village Green will be used more and more for train- ing and games and as such we don’t want vehicular traffic moving in that area as children will be chasing footballs down the hill and across the road.

A Boom gate has been installed on the gate at the entrance to the ringroad around the Main Oval. This gate will open at 3.30pm each afternoon and all weekend. Access to the bottom oval and entry into the Sharks will be via - Langford Lane‖ off Musgrave Avenue between 5am and 3.30pm week-days.

Southport Sharks JAFC News Newsletter Date: UNDERSTANDING OF CLUB CULTURE

We have all heard the statement, ‘The Club is bigger than the individual’ but what does this mean 20th April 2015 and how can we link this with our Culture? One needs to start by embracing our Club History; the past Players, Captains, Presidents and Premierships. Take the time to stroll through the ‘Hall of Fame’ and trophy cabinets in the Southport Sharks Sporting Club. Volume 6, Issue 3 We need to refocus on and strengthen our Culture by emphasising individual character and per- sonal leadership. This should start from an early age but needs to be fostered especially in our Youth age groups. Some qualities that need addressing include: Pg. 5 1. Understanding & Empathy. 2. Respect. 3. Co-operation. 4. Accountability. 5. Honesty. 6. Helpfulness. 7. Dedication. 8. Encouragement. 9. Pride. 10. Optimism. We need to remember; ‘It’s NOT what the club can do for you but what YOU can do for the CLUB.’ Our Club looks at developing, expanding and hopefully shaping the lives of our players and future ‘stars.’ This can ONLY be done with the full support of our player base and Parent Families. One cannot just rely on the dedicated ‘few’, who regularly give of their valued time, commitment and efforts, in becoming part of the Committee. We are all volunteers! The true success of a club depends on the unification of the Committee, Coaches, Managers, Team helpers, Playing Group and our Parent Families. We need to work as ONE! Don’t sit back waiting to be asked or involved, OFFER your assistance. Make offering to help, contagious. Set the ‘mantra’, “Happy, Helpful People make for Better Sharkies.” We shouldn’t need to be rewarded for what we do about the club, just know that in our hearts, we are helping someone and thus achieving Greatness for the Mighty Southport Sharks. It’s the ‘little things ‘that count.’ 1. Being organized ourselves, so we don’t leave things in the Change Rooms or rubbish around the grounds. Don’t be prepared to walk over or around something that you know shouldn’t be there. 2. Offer your help to assist in the canteen, BBQ or on game day. Don’t watch or stand by, when you see one of our volunteer helpers struggling with heavy loads to restock the can- teen, put up a tent or set the fields. “Many hands make light work.” 3. Respect our equipment and club facilities. We need to value what we have, so improve- ments can be gained in the future. Thus we set the CULTURE, otherwise known as ‘the way WE do things.’ What we stand for? What we accept? What we promote? These ‘little things’, set and develop THE CULTURE. Why complain, when as individuals, WE have the POWER within ourselves to come up with the solutions. We should ALL be striving to achieve the club’s most valued and prestigious awards. The Ken MacDonald and Club Person of the Year Trophies. The recipients of these awards will be the true upholders of our Club Culture. So don’t sit back, be proactive and make the 2015 season, the HAPPIEST, PROUDEST, RE- WARDING and MOST SUCCESSFUL YEAR EVER!

Volume 6, Issue 3 Sharks Super 6’s This week the U6's received their shirt and bag. Pg. 9 It was also the first week we started handing out awards. The kids started with some kicking, Hand-balling, and marking drills, which was followed by a game. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the session. Awards given this week were Harley Case who received the player of the week certificate. Kobe Brownrigg received the trophy excellent skills during the drills, Joshua Hall received a trophy for most enthusiastic during the game, and Rio Frenklah received a trophy for player of the match. Regards, Stephen Yzel. Coach Super 6’s – Steven Yzel Sharks Under 8’s Co-ordinator - Jason Upfill 0402654033

Sharks Under 8’s White

After a slow start the boys finally got it going in the second quarter and played some great footy for the rest of the game. Some special goals from Bam and some great "almost" goals from Beckam, great work Beckam, they were so close. Good to see some awesome marks from Blayd and Jenson, also to see Jonnie & Jordy really get it going and play some fast football. Jaxon did some strong ruckwork this week and let’s not forget our two award winners this week Travis and Flynn who played really well. Special thank you to Will for helping out Hayden's Silver Team and even kicking two goals. Jason Upfill. Cheers Jason.Coach Under 8’s White – Jason Upfill 0402654033

Sharks Under 8’s Black

This week saw the Blacks take on a very strong Yellow team and a tough but fair game was had with momentum swinging back and forth all day. Particular credit goes to the defenders in each quarter, in the first quarter the yellow team had four shots on goal but with consistent pressure and good marking no goals were scored. Then in the last quarter Ben, Lincoln and James were under siege but they kept trying and can hold their heads very high. For that Ben took home one of players of the week while Jude took the other for all his running and strong body in the contest. A new award was introduced this week and it is a trophy for the best player at training and this week it went to Jack (and Jacks mum) for focussing at training and continuing that at home. Well done buddy. See you all Thursday. Coach Under 8’s Black - Clinton Karger

Match Reports - Round 2 Newsletter Date: Sharks Under 8’s Red

With another round of great weather, the boys played on the main oval for the first time this year. The 20th April 2015 Blue team were very good at getting to the loose ball quickly (well done Coach Michael). However, when we did get the ball we used it well and there were some good skills on display - accurate kick-

ing from Cooper and Ethan R, improved marking from Alex. Volume 6, Issue 3 As a team, there was improvement in getting into good positions when defending, and getting more open in attack. We’ll work on making some better choices in kicking and hand balling to the open players. Pg. 10 One team award went to Ethan Packer for his progress in getting involved in the match, and Eden Knopke for a nice passage of play that showed the value in playing to the umpire’s whistle, and ulti- mately led to a goal. We now look forward to playing under lights this coming Friday. Thanks to all the families that helped with the match day warm-ups, oranges, arm bands and goal umpiring. It's much appreciated. Coach: Neil Readshaw Coach Under 8’s Red – Neil Readshaw 0423783180

Sharks Under 8’s Silver In similar circumstances to last week the Silver boys came out firing in the first quarter but were then outplayed by our opposition in the second. The final half was evenly contested with very little splitting the two teams by the final siren. We welcomed Cody to our team today for his first game, with his silky skills and great goal he showed he is going to be a very handy player. A big thank you to Will from the White team for playing on our side, he even kicked a goal after the siren. The coaching team was impressed with our player’s ability to follow the game plan by looking for targets and playing as a team. Noah was acknowledged as our most consistent player exhibiting our team goals. Sam continues to be our driving force, setting up many attack- ing plays. Jack and Reilly continued their good form from last week and Koby is improving as he learns the game. Best player awards, based on their huge possession count, went to Lockie and Harry. Well done Boys! Coach Under 8’s Silver – Hayden Ewens 0417775436

Sharks Under 8’s Blue Another beautiful week of weather for footy and whilst the sun shone, so did the boys from the U/8 Blue and Red teams. The Blues played with great enthusiasm and welcomed a couple of teammates for the first time this season. These boys and the rest of the team looked like they had been together as a group for years displaying great spirit, camaraderie and a willingness to make sure everyone got a good turn. Player of the day went to Mason and the team spirit award went to Cooper J. Now we can look for- ward to our big game under lights this Friday night. Coach Under 8’s Blue - Michael Prigg

Sharks Under 9’s Silver 20th April 2015 Well it’s Friday night footy & finally we get to play our first game. After the disappointment of last week turning up and ready to go only to have the other team forfeit, the boys were pumped and Volume 6, Issue 3 ready to tackle Broadbeach. At first our boys were a bit shell shocked by a very good Broadbeach team but after quarter time we started to put into practice what we’ve been training on. All the boys tried really hard and for their first game in the under 9’s with a big adjustment from the under 8’s the Pg. 11 signs we very encouraging. Our awards this week went to Charlie for his courage and mixing it with the “big boys’, Nelson who repelled the oppositions attack time and again & Phoenix for his all- around great game and bring his team mates into the game. Well done boys great effort. Thanks to all the parents who turned out to watch and helped out on the night. It’s very much appre- ciated. Cheers Corey, GO SHARKS! Coach Under 9’s Silver – Corey Gillie Sharks Under 9’s White No report submitted. Coach Under 9’s White – Peter McCallum 0425322782 Sharks Under 9’s Black This week we played our first Friday night game under lights against Broadbeach Yellow. It was tough game but the boys did well and scored a few goals, our hand-balling under pressure improved from the week before which was great to see. Congratulations to Bailey G and Kyle who received the awards this week for their outstanding effort. Thanks, Jason & Michelle Swanson. Coach Under 9’s Black – Jason Swanson 0418763115 Sharks Under 10’s Black No report submitted. Coach Under 10’s Black – Owen Gregory 0411757258 Sharks Under 10’s Silver Last Friday night the Under 10 Silver Team played Broadbeach in round two of the 2015 season. All four-quarters were strongly contested and it was pleasing to see the inten- sity has continued on from last year. The boys took it up to a very skilled Broadbeach team. It was great to see that after every quarter break that the instructions given were carried out. Some strong positives to come out of the match was the tackling, it definitely slowed the run of Broadbeach and on most occasions the delivery of the ball to a target was excellent. Thank-you to Zade Wagstaff, Phoe- nix Howard and Callum Gillie from our Under 9’s they were all great inclusions to our team and together with our team, can hold their heads up high. Welcome to Southport Sharks Harley Case in your first AFL game, I’m sure you will continue to improve throughout the season. Best player was Max Rooke, who played a real Captains game today. Max won the hardball and showed exceptional endeav- our and determination. Coach’s award went to Lachlan Hilton who won the ball regularly and disposed of it with great skill. Mark Low. We had a tough and challenging game on Saturday against Broadbeach Yellow winning 50-38. 20th April 2015 Leo Trueman was best on ground always running and tackling when needed & Cooper Cross played fantastic down forward kicking his first goals in his first year of AFL. Volume 6, Issue 3 We are hoping to have a better game this Sunday against Burleigh, so good luck to all our Under 11's. Pg. 12 Awards for this week: Best on Ground: Leo Trueman, Coaches Award: Cooper Cross & Most Deter- mined: Kai Mortimer.

Scott. Coach Under 11’s Silver – Scott Cope Sharks Under 12’s Div 1 The boys met the benchmark of the competition this week, coming up against the skilful & well drilled Cats. The boys battled hard, right to a goal after the siren. Plenty of positives, encouragement & mo- tivation to come from the game, so let’s keep working hard on the track boys! Narrow loss by the Sharks after a fighting come back in the final quarter, the Cats had built a lead in the middle of the game that was hard to over- come in the end. Match Reports - Round 2 Newsletter Date: Sharks Under 15’s Div 1 20th April 2015 Great effort by all the boys against Broadbeach this week. Although we were beaten on the score- board convincingly the team put in a much improved effort. The first win isn't far away.

Best players were: Paris Degroot, Hodgy, Ethan Hunt and Josh Pettman. Volume 6, Issue 3 Dale. Nick & Jacko 100 Games Coach Under 15’s Div 1 – Dale Turner 0427892704 Pg. 13 Sharks Under 15’s Div 3 What a great game today boys. First 2 quarters really showed what you could do as a team when we follow our game plan, we hold our lines put pressure on the opposition and make them play the game the way we want, excellent work. Then there was the third quarter and that showed what happens when we go ball chasing and don’t hold our lines, which al- lowed Broadbeach to get back into the game. But the final quarter was a test of your resilience under pressure and I think we stood up pretty good. We fought out the game to hold a fast finishing Broad- beach to a draw. This is something we can work on and get better at closing a game out. Award winners: Ky, Aiden, Max. Special mention to Lachie Fahey for his first Goal, Shaun for his contested work, and Tysen for his attack on the ball at every contest and Bryce for his field position. Goal scorers: Jacko Z, Bryce, Lachey F, Aiden, Zach and Ky. Good to see so many goal kickers. Overall, we played pretty well; we just need to push it home for 4 quarters. Coach Rob. Sharks Under 17’s Div 1

We went into the game a little under prepared and up against a much better outfit in Broadbeach this week. They jumped us and kicked 6 goals 3 to our zip in the first Quarter and after that it was a fairly even contest. Final Scores Broadbeach 12-14-86 to Sharks 4-6-30. Areas to improve; our contested footy, our defence allocation, movement around the contest and game preparation. Goals - 1 each to Connor, Mark, Blade and an awesome goal by Zac. Best - Bailey, Bowie, Terry, Mason, Mark, Dean and Connor There are many players in our team who have to regain the respect of their fellow team mates after this performance so get down to training and rebuild our brand together. Thanks again to Trav, Dave and all the parents who helped out this week and the academy boys for running and water duties. Go Sharks. Jim. Coach Under 17’s Div 1 – Jim Sandral 0427607725

Match Reports - Round 2 Newsletter Date: Sharks Under 17 Div 2 After our great win last week we were up against it this week with 11 new players in our strarting line up, including 5 players from our under 15s who helped out, also the fact that we played against a 20th April 2015 Coomera side who are pressing for a div 1 elevation. Unfortunately we did not start the way we wanted with too many players not in front and failing to man up. We went in at half time down 9 goals to 1. The pleasing thing was that we did not give in Volume 6, Issue 3 and we came out a very different and more committed side and ended up winning on the score board for the second half. A few special mentions to a few of our players including Matty Baulch in his first game back for the year, he really put his hand up with a consistent effort for 4 quarters including a Pg. 14 strong performance when was asked to play on the ball. Also a great game from Mitch Johnston who played all day at full back he didn’t give in and stopped a lot of Coomera Goals. I also must mention Daniel Hodgson from under 15s who won his position in the back line with some solid tough footy. Score: Coomera 12.11.83 def Southport 4.3.27 Best Players: Matty Baulch, Mitch Johnston, Daniel Hodgson, Jarrod Shute, Quinn Gelinger, Liam Schiffauer, Jamie Teague, Baylee McKenna & Damon Beattie. Coach David. Coach Under 17 Div 2 - David Djurovitch Sharks Under 19’s Colts After a fantastic preparation last week and a positive vibe around the boys, we were all excited about taking this game on as our round 1. It was always going to be a physical contest with past history between some of the Palmy lads and coming into the new season as the hunted, we were ready for the challenge. We played some text book footy in the 1st quarter with our midfield dominating run and our forwards complemented this with scoreboard pressure. The 2nd quarter was all about turn- ing our defence into attack and our young boys in Kenny and Watmuff were fantastic in this depart- ment. Although we had to deal with 2 yellow cards in this quarter we went into the sheds at half time with a healthy lead 8-3-51 to 1-2-8.The second half was a bit patchy as we were a little rattled by a complete clown-fish from the opposition, disgraceful umpiring and 8 x 50 meter penalties? This didn't stop the momentum of Hayden Correa who was brilliant up forward and Lefty leading by example all over the paddock. A great result first up with lots of positive, but also with lots of improvements to work on. Thanks to all the off field support this week, congratulations to Mark and the Magpies great win and cheers to our sponsors for the awards. Final Score: Sharks 14-7-91 def PBC 5-4-34 Goals: Correa 5 (think it was 6) Brady 3, Shaw 2, Davidson, Beynon, Hill, Ellis Best: Watmuff, Harrison, Correa, Beynon, Mansbridge, Brady R. Coach Chants. I look forward to sharpening up our disposals as to make the most of our opportunities in the coming weeks. Thanks to AJ from Burleigh for helping out, awesome efforts from Beast.
