BISHOP CHALLONER ‘ADOPT A NATION’ FOR BIRMINGHAM’S GYMNASTICS WORLD CUP Bishop Challoner Catholic College has been selected to be part of the Gymnastics World Cup (21-22 March) opening ceremony. Juliet Osei and Isaac Tanner will parade the British national flag across the concourse at Arena Birmingham during the first night of the event. The men’s competition will be staged on Wednesday 21st and the women battle it out on Thursday 22nd. Ex-Bishop Challoner student, Dominick Cunningham, will be one of the four gymnasts competing for Great Britain at the event. Juliet Osei said: “To be involved in the event in this way is an amazing opportunity. It will be a real honour for us to lead out the British team and Dominick next week.” Isaac Tanner also said: “I’d love to be as good as Dominick one day and to have him come from our school is really inspiring. He is an example of what you can be if you train hard and practice.” The Gymnastics World Cup will see the world’s top gymnasts competing over all apparatus. The GB team will be up against gymnasts from eight other nations over two nights of competition in the all-round event, which for the men includes the floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar. The women will battle it out on vault, uneven bars, beam and floor. On having pupils from his old school flying the flag for Great Britain, Dominick Cunningham said: “It’s going to feel extra special to have Issac and Juliet lead me out at Arena Birmingham for an event as big as this in my home city. Bishop Challoner is where it all started for me as a gymnast and has been a huge part of my journey. They have always been supportive throughout my career so to have them involved is brilliant. “ The World Cup on March 21st and March 22nd is one of the first major international sporting events in the city in the countdown to the 2022 Commonwealth Games and will be the last event before gymnasts from the four home nations head to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games in Australia. In celebration of the city being awarded the Commonwealth Games in 2022, Birmingham City Council are running an exclusive ticket offer for local residents. All tickets for the men’s event on Wednesday 21st March will be priced at £20.22 (booking fees apply). Use code BIRM2022 at checkout to redeem this offer.
