31.8 — 18.9 Magazin Musikfest Berlin 2012 VORWORT Vom 31. August bis 18. September startet das Berliner Konzertleben mit dem Musikfest Berlin in die neue Spielzeit 2012/13, veranstaltet von den Ber- liner Festspielen in Kooperation mit der Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker. An 20 Tagen werden in der Phi l harmonie und deren Kammermusiksaal, im Großen Sendesaal des rbb, im Konzerthaus Berlin, in der Akademie der Künste, im Tempodrom, Kühlhaus Berlin und in der Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche 25 Veranstaltungen mit rund 80 Werken von 30 Komponisten präsentiert, aufgeführt von 24 Orchestern, Chören, Instrumental- und Vokalensembles und über 60 Solisten. 2012 ist nicht nur das Jahr der amerikanischen Präsident- schaftswahlen, sondern es jährt sich auch der Geburtstag des gro- ßen, vor zwanzig Jahren verstorbenen amerikanischen Komponis- ten John Cage zum hundertsten Mal. Cage wiederum huldigte 1976 – im Jahr des Bicentennial der Gründung der Vereinigten Staaten – seinem Heimatland mit einer orchestralen Komposition, die er Apartmenthouse 1776 nannte und Seiji Ozawa und dem Boston Sym- phony Orchestra, dem Chicago Symphony und Cleveland Orchest- ra, dem Los Angeles und New York Philharmonic und dem Phi- ladelphia Orchestra widmete. Mit der Widmung von Apartment- house 1776, das die religiösen und musikalischen Prägungen der Gründerjahre Nordamerikas – protestantische, sephardische, indi- anische und afroamerikanische Lieder – versammelt, wurde so die Feier der amerikanischen Gründerzeit zugleich zur Sache der gro- ßen Orchester erklärt. 1976, anlässlich der Bicentennial-Feiern erfolgte auch – in einer Produktion der Houston Grand Opera – erstmals die ungekürzte Aufführung von George Gershwins 1934/35 entstandener Oper Porgy and Bess. »Oh, we’re leavin’ for the Promise’ Lan’, Leavin’ for the Promise’ Lan’«, singt Bess in ihrem Spiritual am Ende des ersten Aktes, den Tod des von Crown erschlagenen Robbins betrauernd. -
Abbie Furmansky
Abbie Furmansky American soprano Abbie Furmansky came to prominence while performing as an ensemble member at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where she quickly established herself in the lyric repertoire. She is especially noted for her riveting stage presence, rich vocal timbre, musicality and expansive voice. She has worked with well-known conductors such as Kent Nagano, Ingo Metzmacher, Christopher Hogwood, John Nelson, Christian Thielemann and Edo de Waart. Throughout Europe and in the USA, she appeared with the German Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Orchestra, and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, among many others. Further engagements led her to opera houses such as the New York City Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Oper Frankfurt, de Nederlandse Opera and the Baden-Baden Festival. Concert performances include Britten’s War Requiem at the Berlin Philharmonic, Bernstein’s Kaddish Symphony at the Lucerne Festival, Beethoven-Strauss’ Die Ruinen von Athen with the Dresden Philharmonic, Frank Martin’s Golgotha in Potsdam, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in Serbia, Mozart Arias with the Southwest Philharmonic Constance, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. From 2007 to 2010 Abbie Furmansky was a member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater Mainz, where she made her debuts as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, Jenny in Mahagonny, Mimì in La Bohème, Marie in Wozzeck and the title role in Madama Butterfly in a production by Katharina Wagner. As a recitalist she has performed in Zamora and Morelia, Mexico with the pianist Alexandr Pashkov, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, with her husband Daniel Sutton. -

Recently she sang Sieglinde in Beijing in WALKÜRE, a coproduction of the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Beijing Music Festival. With the same role she has been invited to the Grand Théâtre de Genève. At the Staatsoper Berlin she had to cancel due to the corona virus the role of Leonore in FIDELIO (2020). In June 2018 she made her Glyndebourne Festival debut as Marschallin in ROSENKAVALIER. Later this year, in September, Michaela Kaune sang the same role at the Ópera de Colombia in Bogotá. The Marschallin, one of her signature roles she sang in houses like the Opéra de Paris, the Bavarian State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the China National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing a.o. She made her Elbphilharmonie-debut with the final scene of CAPRICCIO under Marek Janowski. In the title role of JENUFA she was invited to the New National Theatre, Tokyo and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The DVD of this production with Michaela Kaune had been nominated for the Grammy Award 2016. Further engagements include Elettra in IDOMENEO (role debut) at the Teatro la Fenice, Ellen Orford in PETER GRIMES at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Sieglinde in WALKÜRE at the Budapest Wagner Festival and in concert performances with the Bamberg Symphonic Orchestra and the title role of ARIADNE AUF NAXOS at the Zurich Opera. -

Since the 2017/2018 Season, Patrick Lange Has Been Music Director of the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden
SINCE THE 2017/2018 SEASON, PATRICK LANGE HAS BEEN MUSIC DIRECTOR OF THE HESSISCHES STAATSTHEATER WIESBADEN. Born near Nuremberg in 1981, he began his musical career as an eight-year-old in the Regensburger Dom- spatzen boys’ choir. After graduating from high school, he studied conducting at the conservatoires in Würzburg and Zurich. In 2005 he was accepted into the funding programme of the Dirigentenforum of the German Music Council and appointed Assistant Conductor of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra by Claudio Abbado. Here, Patrick Lange assisted Claudio Abbado, as well as Herbert Blomstedt, Myung-Whun Chung, Sir Colin Davis, Philippe Jordan and Ingo Metzmacher from 2005 to 2009. As Claudio Abbado’s assistant, he also accompanied the Italian conductor to the Berlin Philharmonic, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Orchestra Mozart Bologna. In 2007, Patrick Lange received the European Cultural Award in the Advancement Award for Young Conductors category and, in 2009, was awarded the first-ever Eugen Jochum Scholarship of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. He began his career as an opera conductor in Zurich and Lu- cerne. In 2007, he made his debut with Le nozze di Figaro at the Komische Oper Berlin, where he worked as first Kapellmeister from 2008 and, since 2010, as Music Director of the opera house. His interpretations of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Production: Andreas Homoki), Rusalka (Production : Barrie Kosky) and Der Freischütz (Production: Calixto Bieito) received international recognition and received positive reviews in the national press. In 2010, he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera and has been a regular guest there ever since. -
