Mammy: A Century of Race, Gender, and Southern Memory Kimberly Wallace-Sanders http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=170676 The University of Michigan Press INTRODUCTION The “Mammi‹cation” of the Nation: Mammy and the American Imagination Nostalgia is best de‹ned as a yearning for that which we know we have destroyed. —david blight The various incarnations of the mammy ‹gure have had a profound in›uence on American culture. There is virtually no medium that has not paid homage to the mammy in some form or another. In his series “Ameri- can Myths,”for example, artist Andy Warhol included both the mammy and Aunt Jemima, along with Howdy Doody, Uncle Sam, Dracula, and the Wicked Witch of the West (‹gs. 1 and 2).1 In the late 1980s, Italian pho- tographer Olivero Toscani created an advertisement for Benetton featuring a close-up of a white infant nursing at the breast of a headless, dark- skinned black woman wearing a red Shetland sweater (‹g. 3). The adver- tisement was met with unbridled criticism from African Americans, yet it won more advertising awards than any other image in Benetton’s advertis- ing history.2 Today, tourists visiting Lancaster, Kentucky, can tour the for- mer slave plantation of Governor William Owsley, ironically called Pleas- ant Retreat. The restored home features many remnants of the Old South, including a “charming mammy bench,” a combination rocking chair and cradle designed to allow mammies to nurse an infant and rock an additional baby at the same time.3 Diminutive mammy “nipple dolls” made in the 1920s from rubber bottle nipples with tiny white baby dolls cradled in their arms are both a “well-kept secret”and an excellent investment by collectors of southern Americana (‹g. -

Bascomb, PhD ABSTRACT Race, class, and politics in film comedy have been debated in the field of African American culture and aesthetics, with scholars and filmmakers arguing the merits of narrative space without adequately addressing the issue of subversive agency of aesthetic expression by black film comedians. With special attention to the 1980-1989 work of comedian Eddie Murphy, this study will look at the film and television work found in this moment as an incisive cut in traditional Hollywood industry and narrative practices in order to show black comedic agency through aesthetic and cinematic narrative subversion. Through close examination of the film, Beverly Hills Cop (Brest, 1984), this project works to shed new light on the cinematic and standup trickster influences of comedy, and the little recognized existence of the 1980s as a decade that defines a base period for chronicling and inspecting the black aesthetic narrative subversion of American film comedy. -

For 27 years, the Showcase has helped to keep our collection Wcurrent and relevant, building one of the most extensive collections of poetry in our nation—an expansive record of the poetry of our time, freely available and open to all. Building the Exhibit and the Poets House Library Collection Every year, Poets House invites poets and publishers to participate in the annual Showcase by donating copies of poetry titles released since January of the previous year. This year’s exhibit highlights poetry titles published in 2018 and the first part of 2019. Books have been contributed by the entire poetry community, from the publishers who send on their titles as they’re released, to the poets who mail us signed copies of their newest books, to library visitors donating books when they visit us. Every newly published book is welcomed, appreciated, and featured in the Showcase. The Poets House Showcase is the mechanism through which we build our library: a comprehensive, inclusive collection of over 70,000 poetry works, all free and open to the public. To make it as extensive as possible, we reach out to as many poetry communities and producers as we can, bringing together poetic voices of all kinds to meet the different needs and interests of our many library patrons. -

Sullivan Professor of English Director of Graduate Studies, English *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT In the post-civil rights era, which is marked by the eradication of legalized racial boundaries, racial passing should be unnecessary and obsolete. Yet contemporary satirists have found satiric portrayals of racial passing to be productive on two levels. On a plot-level, they use passing to interrogate contemporary racial subjectivity and to both explore racial advances and to critique persistent racial inequities. On a structural level, they write fiction that challenges the prescriptive and restrictive aesthetic criteria that they believe African American fiction is required to meet. Ultimately, this fiction offers dynamic critiques of contemporary racial identity and textual production. These authors use satire to examine how the fictional depiction of racial identities/bodies informs, depends on, and dictates the textual body and vice versa. The purpose of the study is to draw on two parallel contemporary literary theories, racial passing and satire, in order to analyze the works of five of the most important and recognized contemporary satiric writers of the post-civil rights generation: Percival Everett, Paul Beatty, Mat Johnson, Trey Ellis, and Adam Mansbach. -

KNIGHT WET-NURSING IS A UNIQUELY GENDERED KIND OF EXPLOITATION, AND under slavery it represented the point at which the exploitation of enslaved women as workers and as reproducers literally intersected. Feeding another woman’s child with one’s own milk constituted a form of labor, but it was work that could only be undertaken by lactat- ing women who had borne their own children. As a form of exploita- tion specific to slave mothers, enforced wet-nursing constituted a distinct aspect of enslaved women’s commodification. -

The Maryland‐District of Columbia‐Virginia Section of the Mathematical Association of America: The First One Hundred Years Caren Diefenderfer Betty Mayfield Jon Scott November 2016 v. 1.3 The Beginnings Jon Scott, Montgomery College The Maryland‐District of Columbia‐Virginia Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) was established, just one year after the MAA itself, on December 29, 1916 at the Second Annual Meeting of the Association held at Columbia University in New York City. In the minutes of the Council Meeting, we find the following: A section of the Association was established for Maryland and the District of Columbia, with the possible inclusion of Virginia. Professor Abraham Cohen, of Johns Hopkins University, is the secretary. We also find, in “Notes on the Annual Meeting of the Association” published in the February, 1917 Monthly, The Maryland Section has just been organized and was admitted by the council at the New York meeting. Hearty cooperation and much enthusiasm were reported in connection with this section. The phrase “with the possible inclusion of Virginia” is curious, as members from all three jurisdictions were present at the New York meeting: seven from Maryland, one from DC, and three from Virginia. However, the report, “Organization of the Maryland‐Virginia‐District of Columbia Section of the Association” (note the order!) begins As a result of preliminary correspondence, a group of Maryland mathematicians held a meeting in New York at the time of the December meeting of the Association and presented a petition to the Council for authority to organize a section of the Association in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
