Press Information Ny förare i Hyundais trio i Rally Sweden På torsdag drar Rally Sweden igång, den andra deltävlingen i WRC säsongen 2015. Hyundai kommer som planerat att starta med tre bilar, men byter ut en skadad Dani Sordo mot nya zeeländaren Hayden Paddon. Förarbytet betyder att Hyundais senaste tillskott Kevin Abbring gör sin debut för såväl Hyundai som i Rally Sweden. På torsdag startar Hyundai i Rally Sweden med gott självförtroende. Med sig över startlinjen har man ett bra resultat från Rallye Monte-Carlo där de båda bilarna som startade tog sig i mål, vilket var Hyundais målsättning från början. Hyundai har också noggrant utvärderat sina tester som gjordes under en vecka i december i Sverige förra året, och optimerat bilarna utifrån de ovanliga förhållandena Rally Sweden bjuder på ur ett WRC-perspektiv. Och i förra veckan kompletterade Hyundai med ytterligare två dagars tester i Sverige. Rally Sweden är den enda riktiga vintertävlingen i WRC med hala och snöiga förhållanden och erbjuder en stor utmaning för alla team. Teamchefen Michel Nandan säger: ”Rally Sweden var en av de klart tuffaste testerna för vårt unga team i fjol – det första året för Hyundai Motorsport. Vi lärde oss mycket under förra Rally Sweden, erfarenheter som kommer bli ovärderliga för oss när vi startar på torsdag”. Hyundai har dock gjort en stor förändring inför Rally Sweden. Dani Sordo, som kör Hyundai i20 WRC #8 råkade nyligen ut för en cykelolycka som gör att han inte kommer att starta. Nya zeeläandaren Hayden Paddon tar tillsammans med John Kennard över spakarna i bil #8 vilket gör att ansvaret för den tredje bilen, Hyundai i20 WRC #20, axlas av nykomlingen Kevin Abbring. Abbring, som kommer från Holland, har aldrig tidigare kört Rally Sweden. Det blir också för första gången som Abbring kör för Hyundai: ”Det känns bra att få chanson att tävla i Rally Sweden för Hyundai, inte minst för att det är mitt första WRC-event någonsin. Det är självklart inte under de bästa omständigheterna och jag hoppas att Dani mår bättre. Vi kommer lägga mycket fokus på förberedelserna inför starten och jag ser främst Rally Sweden som en möjlighet att få erfarenhet.” Hyundai i20 WRC #7 körs som vanligt av teamets mest rutinerade förare Thierry Neuville. Neuville lyckades bra i förra Rally Sweden där han plockade den andra och tredje snabbaste sträcktiden. Rally Sweden är uppdelat i 21 sträckor om totalt 308 km. Rallyt börjar med den sedvanliga Super Special i Karlstad på torsdag. På fredagen tar rallyt förarna över gränsen till Norge, där bilarna kommer köras på vägar som inte har använts sedan 2011. Under lördagen körs tävlingen i Hagfors frusna vinterskogar, inklusive det berömda Colin’s Crest i Vargåsen – där Hyundai vann förra året. Den 15.87 km långa Power Stage i Värmullsåsen leder bilarna till finalceremonin i Karlstad under söndagen. Although last month’s Rally Finland didn’t produce the ultimate result for our team, Hayden finished just outside the podium places after a strong drive. Thierry and Nicolas continue to lead the Drivers’ championship with an advantage of 21 points, while the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads the Manufacturers’ championship by 26 points so there’s plenty of reason to be positive. I must also congratulate our HMDP crew of Jari and Antti for recording their first WRC2 podium of the year with second in that class. Rallye Deutschland is the first tarmac event on the calendar since Tour de Corse in April. Since then we’ve worked on improving the suspension, especially the dampers, and centre differential mapping with two aims in mind: to achieve more grip for the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC and find a better balance. This follows feedback from our drivers during Corsica where they reported being hampered by understeer. Our three drivers for Germany – Thierry, Dani and Andreas – have all sampled the changes during development testing and they also got the opportunity to finalise their set-ups during the recent pre-event test, which took place over five days so we could experience the vineyard roads and those within the Baumholder military range, which are very specific to this rally.

While Turkey is no stranger to the WRC, the event’s new home in Marmaris means an untried route for all manufacturer drivers and teams. And with the battle for both titles at a crucial stage with four rallies remaining, we can expect a very open and action-packed event in what is an important market for Hyundai: car production – including the road-going i20 – at its Izmit plant is 205,000 units per year. I was pleased that we were able to secure a podium result at our home rally in Germany last month. It means Thierry and Nicolas were able to increase their lead of the Drivers’ championship to 23 points, while Hyundai’s advantage over Toyota in the Manufacturers’ championship is 13 points. It was an eventful final morning in Germany, which unfortunately included a retirement for Dani and Carlos, ending their own podium charge. It was a pity for them after a strong weekend. They had the confidence and the speed, and we know they’ll take the positives ahead of their home rally in Spain next month. Thierry and Nicolas were there to pick up the position following Dani’s retirement with Andreas and Anders also moving up to sixth place. For Turkey, we welcome Hayden and Seb back to the team and we look forward to counting on their past performances and experience on gravel to boost our championship hopes on this event.

And 75 minutes later, they’re handed back a hunkered-down Tar-snorting racer. Just in time for the weekend… I won’t be around in Catalunya, which is a real shame. My outing with Mohamed Al-Mutawaa and Abu Dhabi Racing in Corsica really gave me an insight into working with a top-level team and left me wanting more of the same. So, no Spain for me. I will, however, be doing the next best thing: the Mull Rally. John MacCrone and I are out for our second win in three years on one of the rally world’s best-kept secrets. We’re in a Ford Fiesta R5 and start on Friday night, stop around midnight, then re-start Saturday morning and go through until the early hours of Sunday. It’s fantastic competition on some incredible roads on an island just off the west coast of Scotland. Mull will bring to an end an incredible three-rally, three-weekend journey that’s taken me from Bastia to San Marino (Rallylegend with Alister McRae) to Tobermory. I’m only two-thirds down and it’s already been amazing.
