THE DEVELOPMENT of the NAVAL TRUCK GUN CARRIAGE: HISTORY, ARCHAEOLOGY, and DESIGN by Katrina Bunyard March 2019 Director of Thes THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NAVAL TRUCK GUN CARRIAGE: HISTORY, ARCHAEOLOGY, AND DESIGN By Katrina Bunyard March 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. Donald Parkerson Major Department: Program in Maritime Studies Truck carriages represented the primary naval gun mounting of European and American navies throughout the Age of Sail. Developed during the early to mid-16th century, truck gun carriages were found upon armed ships for over three centuries. They allowed for gunners to control and aim their pieces, promoting the development of naval guns of increasing power. During the 19th century, the truck carriage became viewed as a stagnant medieval leftover that underwent little change. Some later scholars further propagated this belief. This thesis seeks to examine the truck carriage’s place in the development of modern western navies, evaluate the nature of its design and construction development, and explore its presence in the archaeological record. The truck carriage developed from the concerted efforts of artillerists across Europe, developed in sophistication in tandem with naval administrations, and played a role in shaping the living and working space aboard warships. Numerous archaeological sites contain the remains of several types of gun carriage, providing ample material for further study. Through the development of a gun carriage database, statistical testing was undertaken to explore the nature of design change over time. This database suggests that the truck carriage underwent non-linear change in several of its basic proportions over the course of its lifetime, likely adapting to changing capabilities of naval cannon and increased industrialization. Each datasheet includes the characteristics profiles of the unit it describes, as well as any wargear and special abilities it may have. KEYWORDS Throughout these datasheets you will come across the <Regiment> keyword. This is shorthand for a keyword of your choosing, as described below. <REGIMENT> Most Astra Militarum units are drawn from a regiment. Some datasheets specify which regiment the unit is drawn from (e.g. Mukaali Riders have the Tallarn keyword, so are drawn from the Tallarn Regiment), but where a datasheet does not, it will have the <Regiment> keyword. When you include such a unit in your army, you must nominate which regiment that unit is from. You then simply replace the <Regiment> keyword in every instance on that unit’s datasheet with the name of your chosen regiment. For example, if you were to include an Atlas Recovery Tank in your army, and you decided it was from Vostroya, its <Regiment> Faction keyword is changed to Vostroyan and its Recovery Vehicle ability would then read: ‘At the end of the Action phase, this unit can to repair one friendly Vostroyan Vehicle unit in base contact with it. A recent BBC series recreating the mid 18th- century Pacific voyages of Captain Cook, successfully demonstrated in this regard that H.M.S. Was it 1.a genuine officially modified Pattern ’07 or 2. one cut down by a collector to emulate a trials bayonet such as the Australian Shortened and Lightened No 1 (see BCB A12) or Owen bayonet (see BCB A 13), or 3. had a pig hunter cut it down for a pig sticker? As you can see it is very similar to an Australian Owen gun bayonet (lower) and it came in an Owen bayonet scabbard marked MANGROVITE ’44. However the bayonet itself is manufactured by MOLE and dated 3/18. Like the Owen Mk I Bayonet introduced in 1944 it has a10 inch blade, however the fuller carries through the point and this has only been curved on the lower side unlike the Owen which has a slight curve on the top of the point. Note too that India shortened many Pat ’07 bayonets including British & Australian ones although these normally had 12 inch blades.

  • The Stirling Castles Prince Rupert Patent Demi-Cannon
    The Stirling Castles Prince Rupert patent demi-cannon. D.M.McElvogue Introduction The Stirling Castle was one of 30 great ships of the line built as part of Samuel Pepys 1677 shipbuilding programme. The programme consisted of 1 first rate, 9 second rates and 20 third rates (Fox 1980:154). The new ships initial design was found lacking. The cost of the alterations to the vessels was met by the King himself, Charles II. To simplify maintenance the King insisted the masts, spars, rigging and fittings of each rate be standardised, whilst Pepys ensured the ordnance was also standardised. This marked the first steps in the control of naval architecture by the naval administration. The size of the building programme strained the resources of the Royal Dockyards and meant that the new ships were ordered in two instalments. The first instalment consisted of 3 second rates and 12 third rates, and the second instalment of 1 first rate, 6 second rates and 8 more third rates. Figure 1a Stirling Castle being launched at Deptford The Stirling Castle was a third rate laid down as part of the first instalment of ships in 1677. It was built by John Shish and completed in two years, being launched at Deptford on the south bank of the river Thames in 1679 (figure 1a). At 1,114 tons the Stirling Castle was slightly larger than the average 3 rate as laid down in the specifications of the 1677 programme, this being 1,008 tons (see table 1).
