Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157. Arkle gave them a 43 lb and 55 lb beating respectively and was 10/1-on when making it five out of five for the season when taking Best Mate jumps the second last in splendid isolation twelve month ago 1 Cheltenham Festival Issue the Gold Cup in a canter. -

Finest City to Fasig- Tipton November
THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 2017 A LOOK BACK AT SALES WEEK IN SARATOGA FINEST CITY TO FASIG- by Bill Oppenheim Last weekend=s Fasig-Tipton New York-bred sale rounded off TIPTON NOVEMBER the company=s first three yearling sales of the season by setting new records for gross ($16.2 million), average ($89,088) and median ($69,500), and of course when we say >set new records,= that actually does mean the metrics were actually higher, not just from 2016, but even from 2015, which we=ve been using as the benchmark year all through 2017. The gross was up by 18% and the average by 15% over 2016, but the numbers which really confirm the North American yearling market, anyway, is actually improving are the 9% increase in both gross and average over the 2015 New York-bred sale, when exactly the same (182) number of yearlings sold. As you can see in the Weekly Sales Ticker, this means the three-sale gross has improved by 5%, from $81.6 million to $85.3 million, while the average is up by 9%, from $153,458 with 532 sold over the three sales in 2015, to $167,286, with 510 sold (down 4%) this year. Welcome to the March 2015 Edition of the Donn Mcclean Racing Newsletter. Looking Ahead
Welcome to the March 2015 edition of the Donn McClean Racing newsletter. Looking ahead It’s all about Cheltenham now. Just a few days to go. The Gold Cup picture has finally come into focus. Holywell was the last main contender to warm up for the race in public, Jonjo O’Neill’s horse recording a facile victory at Kelso last month. Carlingford Lough had already thrown his hat into the ring when he won the Hennessy at Leopardstown, and Foxrock had given his owner Barry Connell a should-I-pay-the-supplementary- entry-fee-or-not-type headache by chasing him home, less than a length behind. They are the nice types of headaches. Hurricane Fly keeps on beating last year’s Champion Hurdler Jezki to remind us that he is a player, even at the age of 11 (wasn’t Sea Pigeon 11?), and threatens to give Ruby Walsh another one of those nice types of headaches: Hurricane Fly or Faugheen. Faugheen is the 5/4 favourite for the Champion, but how would you get off Hurricane Fly? The Champion Chase picture is still a little blurred. Sprinter Sacre was beaten by Dodging Bullets on his return to the racetrack in the Clarence House Chase at Ascot, and Sire De Grugy unseated his rider on his return in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury. That allowed Clarence House Chase winner Dodging Bullets and Game Spirit Chase winner Mr Mole to enter the fray. Then Sire De Grugy won at Chepstow and the money for Sprinter Sacre in recent days suggests that he might be back close to his best.
