But who was thereal King Arthur? The facts have become so lost In legend and fantasy thatall we know for certain is that he was one of the lastRomanized Britons to fight against the invading Saxons at the end of the fifth century.Under his leadershi p, the Saxons were driven back and England wasunited under a native ruler as once she had been under theRoman conquerors. In the earliest record of Arthur, written during theninth century, he is spoken of as a soldier, more like a chieftain orgeneral than a king, who lived a simple life and fought twelvevictorious battles against the Saxons. But as the historical events grew dimin people's memories, stories of a great king clustered more and morearound Arthur until he seemed to be an emperor equivalent toCharlemagne, surrounded by a company of noble knightswho were sworn to defend the weak. You are going to readstories of King Arthur and his knights becausethey are part of our heritage.You may read them simply as stories of mystery and adventure or as stories of thesoul's struggle to find its way. Although the figures aremedieval and the Fellowship of the Round Table is an idea that goes back at least to 1155, thethemes of these stories are universal. Everyone has in his own mind aworld far stranger than that outside him; it is this inner world ofdreams that forms the subject matter of these stories, Yet history and myth are so intermingled inthe Arthurian legends that some of the supernatural happenings have akind of historical founda- tion. For example, in the account ofKing Arthur's pulling of the sword from the stone, we may have a reference,tothe early age of metals when a hero proved himself by his power to forgehis own weapon. Another example of historical fact in the midst of all thefantasy is that an adviser such as Merlinwould be indispensable to early kings in their attempt to hold their place among warringrivals. Even the forest that the scene of so many encounters may beconsidered the real forest that at one time covered much of England. But if these tales were nothing but history, theyprobably would not have held the attention of so many people,both young and old, for so many centuries. Moreimportant than anything historical is the view that pervades these stories. We maydescribe this view as one which . accepts the unseen powers that shape theindividurals destiny. The ease with which Arthur pulls the sword from the stonereveals that it is his destiny to do the miraculous deed. The sources involved here are Welsh and other Celtic tradition, Latin texts, French romances and other works from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Malory’s and Tennyson’s representation of the Queen, and finally Guinevere in the twentieth century in Bradley’s and Miles’s novels as well as in movies. The main sources in the first three chapters are of European origins; however, there is a focus on French and British works. There is a lack of study of German sources, which could bring different insights into the character of Guinevere. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the evolution of Queen Guinevere and to point out that through the works of Malory and Tennyson, she has been misrepresented and there is more to her than her adulterous relation with Lancelot. This essay is exclusively focused on Queen Guinevere and her analysis involves other characters like Arthur, Lancelot, Merlin, Enide, and more. First the Queen is only represented as Arthur’s unfaithful wife, and her abduction is narrated. We have here the basis of her character. Chrétien de Troyes develops this basic character into a woman of important values about love and chivalry.

    Summary of the Perlesvaus or The High History of the Grail (probably first decade of 13th century, certainly before 1225, author unknown). Survives in 3 manuscripts, 2 partial copies, and one early print edition Percival starts out as the young adventurous knight who did not fulfill his destiny of achieving the Holy Grail because he failed to ask the Fisher King the question that would heal him, events related in Chrétien's work. The author soon digresses into the adventures of knights like Lancelot and Gawain, many of which have no analogue in other Arthurian literature. Often events and depictions of characters in the Perlesvaus differ greatly from other versions of the story. For instance, while later literature depicts Loholt as a good knight and illegitimate son of King Arthur, in Perlesvaus he is apparently the legitimate son of Arthur and Guinevere, and he is slain treacherously by Arthur's seneschal Kay, who is elsewhere portrayed as a boor and a braggart but always as Arthur's loyal servant (and often, foster brother. Kay is jealous when Loholt kills a giant, so he murders him to take the credit. This backfires when Loholt's head is sent to Arthur's court in a box that can only be opened by his murderer. Kay is banished, and joins with Arthur's enemies, Brian of the Isles and Meliant. Guinevere expires upon seeing her son dead, which alters Arthur and Lancelot's actions substantially from what is found in later works. Though its plot is frequently at variance with the standard Arthurian outline, Perlesvaus did have an effect on subsequent literature.

    Early Theatre 9.1 Megan Lynn Isaac Legitimizing Magic in The Birth of Merlin Bastardy, adultery, and infidelity are topics at issue in The Birth of Merlin on every level. Unfortunately, most of the critical examination of these topics has not extended beyond the title page. In 1662 Francis Kirkman and Henry Marsh commissioned the first known printing of the play from an old manuscript in Kirkman’s possession. The title page of their version attributes the play to Shakespeare and Rowley, and generations of critics have quarreled over the legitimacy of that ascription. Without any compelling evidence to substantiate the authorship of Shakespeare and Rowley, many critics have tried to solve the dilemma from the other end. Just as in the play Merlin’s mother spends most of the first act inquiring of every man she meets whether he might have fathered her child, these scholars have attempted to attribute the play to virtually every dramatist and combination of dramatists on record. Beaumont, Fletcher, Ford, Middleton, and Dekker, among others, have all been subjected to the literary equivalent of a blood-test; analyses of their spelling and linguistic preferences have been made in an effort to link them to The Birth of Merlin.1 Unlike the hero of the drama, however, the play itself is still without a father, though it does have a birthdate in 1622, as has been demonstrated be N.W. Bawcutt.2 Debates over authorship are not particularly uncommon in early modern studies, but the question of who fathered the legendary Merlin, the topic of the play, is more unusual and more interesting.

King Arthur remains a hero of legend in the annals of the British Isles. However, one question remains: did King Arthur actually exist? Early medieval historical sources provide clues that have identified various figures that may have been the template for King Arthur. Such candidates such as the second century Roman general Lucius Artorius Castus, the fifth century Breton leader Riothamus, and the sixth century British leader Ambrosius Aurelianus hold high esteem as possible candidates for the historical King Arthur. Through the analysis of original sources and authors such as the Easter Annals, Nennius, Bede, Gildas, and the Annales Cambriae, parallels can be established which connect these historical figures to aspects of the Arthur of literary tradition.

    Cornwall in the Early Arthurian Tradition Heather Dale April 2008 It is believed that an actual “King Arthur” lived in 6th Century AD in the southwestern area of Britain. A brief history lesson is needed to provide the backdrop to this historical Arthur. In 43 AD, the Romans occupied Britain, subduing the northern Pictish & Scottish tribes, and incorporating the pre-literate but somewhat more civilized Celtic peoples into the Roman Empire. The Romans intermarried with the Celts, who emulated their customs and superior technology; these Romanized Celts became known as Britons. When the Romans abandoned Britain in 410 AD, the Britons found themselves attacked on all sides: the northern tribes pushed south, the Irish raided from the west, and fierce Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Franks, Frisians) and Norsemen slowly pushed the Celts into southwestern Wales and Cornwall. Some even fled across to the Continent, establishing Brittany in western France and becoming known as Bretons. It is in this turbulent post-Roman time that a brave man, perhaps a sort of tribal chieftain, led a small force of Britons into battle with the Germanic tribes. And due to tactical skill, superior fighting prowess and/or incredible luck (we will never know) this Artorius or Arthur held back the Germanic hordes from his corner of Britain for 30 years, a full generation. This incredible feat is first mentioned in a 6th century quasi-historical Latin chronicle by the monk Gildas. Later chroniclers added detail of dubious historical accuracy but great heroism to the tale of Arthur. The Venerable Bede wrote in 731 AD about the first great victory over the Saxons at Mount Badon (surmised by some to be Liddington Castle near Swindon), and the Welsh chronicler Nennius bases his 9th century story on material from the rich Welsh storytelling tradition.

    LANCELOT REBORN: THE SQUIRE'S WARNING IN THE CANTERBURY TALES Kristin Bovaird-Abbo At the beginning of Geoffrey Chaucer's romance, The Squire's Tale, the Tartar king Cambyuskan, perhaps more familiar to modem audiences as Genghis Khan, celebrates his birthday with a lavish feast, when suddenly a strange knight · enters the hall. In order to communicate clearly to his audience the courtly manner in which this exotic knight greets those in attendance, the pilgrim Squire turns to Arthurian legend, noting that "Gawayn, with his olde curteisye, I Though he were comen ayeyn out of Fairye, I Ne koude hym nat amende with a word" (95-97). Thus having acquainted his audience with the manner in which the strange knight speaks, the pilgrim Squire continues his tale. The stranger knight has come on behalf of the King of Arabia and India, and bears four marvelous gifts: a steed of brass and a magic sword for Cambyuskan, and an enchanted ring and mirror for Cambyuskan' s daughter Canacee. The stranger then alights and joins the festivities, which are so sumptuous that the pilgrim Squire is unable to describe them. No man could, he says, except "Launcelot, and he is deed" (287). Through these two Arthurian references, the pilgrim Squire indicates that he is well-versed in Arthurian lore, and he expects his audience to be as well. More importantly, the pilgrim Squire sends a carefully constructed message to his fellow pilgrim whose tale has just preceded his. That is, the Merchant in his tale of old January's cuckolding at the hands of his wife May and his squire Damian has offered a demeaning portrait of squires as lecherous traitors.1 Regardless of whether or not the Merchant's disparaging remarks regarding squires are directed specifically at the pilgrim Squire, the latter warns the Merchant that he is the modem incarnation of Arthur's two greatest knights and will not tolerate such abuse of his vocation.

This thesis examines the role of fictional costume and colour in constructing identities within two fourteenth-century Arthurian verse narratives: Froissart’s Middle French Meliador and the anonymous Middle English Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. To emphasise the imaginative value of material cultures and discuss the potential reception of fictional objects, the argument draws on illuminations from nine manuscripts of prose Arthurian stories.

I analyze four anonymous Middle English texts and two tales from Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte Darthur that are translations and adaptations of Old French Arthurian romances. Through the comparison of the French and English romances, I demonstrate how English translators employed a variety of techniques including what we might define as close translation and loose adaptation. Malory, in particular, epitomizes the medieval translator. The two tales that receive attention in this project illustrate his use of translation and adaptation. Furthermore, the study is breaking new ground in the field of medieval studies since the work draws on translation theory in conjunction with textual analysis. Translation theory has forged a re-evaluation of translation as a literary medium. Using this growing field of research and scholarship, we can enhance our understanding of translation as it existed during the Middle Ages.

From the start he views the Arthurian court ambivalently, feeling horror at its failure to anticipate the democratic and technological glories of his own nineteenth century, mixed with a somewhat reluctant dash of romantic admi- ration for its very otherness, exhibited with such vigour and colour, especially in the quaint richness of its verbal expression. If the Yankee thus drops substantial weights onto the pans swinging on each side of the scales of judgement, the balance arm tips heavily toward the nega- tive. His early conclusion is that Camelot must be an insane asylum, its denizens virtual savages who can be dismissed as ‘white Indians’. Listening to the talk in court for the first time, he reports: As a rule the speech and behavior of these people were gracious and courtly; and I noticed that they were good and serious listeners when anybody was telling anything— I mean in a dogfightless interval. And plainly, too, they were a childlike and innocent lot; telling lies of the stateliest pattern with a most gentle and winning naivety, and ready and willing to listen to anybody else’s lie, and believe it, too. It was hard to asso- ciate them with anything cruel or dreadful; and yet they dealt in tales of blood and suf- fering with a guileless relish that made me almost forget to shudder.1 This passage, of course, shows us much that we try to avoid as historians.
