Please be aware that most postsecondary institutions have deadlines in the early spring, so if you are considering starting school in the fall of 2013, please look at the deadlines for the schools you are interested in to ensure you do not miss those dates, as well as applicable scholarship dates. Remember, in the previous newsletters as well as in the announcements folder, there is a list of postsecondary dates (open houses) as well as Scholarships. In particular, please do not forget to apply for the Rutherford Scholarship by May 1, 2013 if you are intending to pursue postsecondary studies in the fall. You have to apply. It is not an automatic qualification. That being said, the application is very basic and simple to do.

From your Learning Support Team

Hello everyone,

We have seen a few changes this week in our Learning Support program. We welcome Skye Flynn to our team; she is the Educational Assistant for Grade 11. Jill Whaley has assumed the Grade 9 Educational Assistant position and is taking over from Heather Ridsdale this week.

Christmas is coming and everyone is looking forward to the break. Use some of your time over Christmas to get caught up with missing assignments. It is such a good feeling to be able to start the New Year with no missing work and to feel that you are Ruth Craigen approaching your courses afresh! Learning Support Coordinator This is our last newsletter before Christmas. I wish all our families a very blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Heather Ridsdale has a new position in The Centre for Hello, My name is Jill Whaley and I have Learning@HOME, she is now the just recently moved here from Ontario Finance Administrative Assistant. with my husband and two children. She has success in her new role. Thank you all for worked with us for almost 9 years a warm welcome and I appreciate your and has been outstanding with her patience as I get settled in my new support of students and teachers position. alike. We wish her all the best for the future!

Hi, I am Skye Flynn. I used to work in the CFL Registrar’s Office, and I am excited to join Learning Support. I am looking forward to working with the grade 10 students, and getting to know Don’t cry because it’s over, you all. smile because it happened. 6 - Dr. Seuss “Calling All Diploma Students”

This one is for you!

The end of semester 1 is coming up fast, a bit too fast for some of us! The diploma exams are just on the other side of the Christmas holiday and there is still work to be done before your course will be complete. It is very easy to get into the spirit of Christmas, relax, catch up with family and friends, and not notice how the days are slipping by. Before you know it, it’s January—Happy New Year! Yikes, what happened to December?

Diploma students who are not up to date with their work should strongly consider the advantages of taking a few days over the Christmas break to catch up on any missing work. Grade 12 is such an important year; every single extra point you can get will make a difference to your mark on your transcript, so don’t let this opportunity slip through your fingers.

This year your mock exams start on December 17 and they go through January and run right into the actual diploma exams, so you see there really isn’t much ‘learning’ time left. Do yourself a favour and take a few days over the break to hit the books and get yourself ready for your exams. Remember this:

Every year we run an Adopted Family program from The Centre for Learning @HOME to help families in need over the Christmas period. In the past, from September until December, we have collected gift cards, cash and items that they require, from members of The Centre for Learning @HOME from a list created by the family themselves.

How can you help? Coordinator – If you are interested in collecting/delivering items at your home for one of our families, please send me an email and I will forward the details.

Gift certificates – We are able to give tax receipts on request with a receipt for the purchase. This is the best way to support our families as they are easy to pass on. Gift Certificates can be dropped at the office in Okotoks or sent to:

Ruth Craigen ( nee Barrett) The Centre for Learning@HOME Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools Box 137, 46 Elma Street Okotoks AB T1S 1J7

Money donated via Visa or MasterCard – We are able to give tax receipts on request for donations over $20. Money will be used to purchase Gift Cards required by the family. Call Marilyn Wright on 938 8046 ext 222 to do this.

Items – Once our lists are compiled, we will send out the family requirements. I ask for local families within the area of each Adopted Family to take care of item collection and delivery for these families. We do not have the room in the office to collect these, so please do not send any items to me.

Magazines – Each year we offer magazine subscriptions and a portion of the cost is donated to the Adopted Family. Details will follow.

Once we have families registered for the Adopted Family Program, we will send out more details.

God Bless and thank you in advance for your support.

We are a family of seven children, who love the outdoors and are homeschooled. There are several learning disabilities and health issues requiring special diets within the family. Last Christmas, we had a major break in at our home and a series of devastating events afterwards. It destroyed our feeling of security and our innocence. We are not used to asking for things, we were usually helping others so this is difficult. The children have been told that Santa will bring them a stocking, but no store bought presents. We may have listed expensive items, these are just the wishes of the children. We would appreciate anything that would give them a good Christmas, I know they would be excited and over the moon to receive anything, new or second hand.

Note from Adopted Family Program Organizer:

I strongly recommend giving Gift Cards for this family to allow the children and parents to purchase their own items due to health and dietary issues. Obviously, if you have second hand items to pass on, these would be gratefully accepted too.

PERSONAL NOTES OR COMMENTS; This has come at the right time. We were left without income for the month of November so as you can imagine it has been extremely difficult to pay bills and buy groceries. My youngest son has Type 1 Diabetes so groceries have had to be our priority and Christmas wasn't going to be much this year. And as a result, I haven't been able to buy winter boots for my oldest. He is growing into men's sizes which makes it much more expensive to buy. This is such a blessing to us, and to all the families who will be taken care of through this program! I can't express enough how incredibly overwhelming it is (and a relief) to have help come at a time like this. Thank-you!
