The debut full-length album from Liverpool outfit Circa Waves, 2015's Young Chasers, is a gleefully frenetic, youthfully exuberant collection of catchy, guitar-based indie rock. Centered on lead singer/songwriter Kieran Shudall, the group also showcases the talents of guitarist Joe Falconer, bassist Sam Rourke, and drummer Colin Jones. Together, they make an urgent, angular style of stripped-down pop that touches upon '80s dance- punk and '90s slacker rock without ever giving in too much to either. With their literate, punk-infused energy, they will certainly draw well-earned comparisons to the early work of Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys. It's a fitting parallel given the presence of veteran producer Jim Abbiss, who worked on Young Chasers and previously helmed albums from the Arctic Monkeys as well as works by similarly inclined acts like the Editors and the Rakes. Admittedly, with Shudall's yearning, resonant croon and Circa Waves' penchant for edgy, driving melodicism, Young Chasers does sound like the work of a band whose members spent a lot of time listening to the Strokes' Is This It. The production sound is also very Strokes-esque, with Shudall's vocals often layered with a delicate haze of fuzzy EFX à la Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas. That said, the comparison might be a bit more of a critique were it not for the sheer high quality and infectious nature of Circa Waves' songs. Cuts like the bubbly "Fossils" and the sparkling "My Love" are romantic yet still hard-driving anthems that hit your bloodstream with the urgency of one's first kiss. Similarly, the jittery "Stuck in My Teeth" and the epic "So Long," with its rising intro and extended ending, are utterly cinematic songs that, as with nearly all of Young Chasers, contain the drama of a film within their tight pop structures. Young Chasers (Deluxe Version) The debut album from UK indie rock foursome Circa Waves is a rambunctious mix of buzzing punk energy and bright pop melodies. Young Chasers offers a non-stop rush of catchy garage riffs, slick new wave hooks, sugary choruses, and tumbling drums. The band bashes their way through infectious tunes like “Good for Me” and “So Long,” and they keep things speedy and breezy even when showing off their sensitive side on sweet sing-alongs like “Stuck in My Teeth” and “My Love.” Young Chasers is packed with surprisingly sharp lyrics and stylish attitude, but mostly it’s just a blast of bouncy summertime fun. According to that fountain of wisdom the Urban Dictionary, a 'chaser' is "something you drink right after taking a shot or swig of hard alcohol… Usually juice, pop or beer". Tenuous though it might be, this seems a pretty accurate description for Circa Waves' debut album Young Chasers too: Fizzy light relief for indie-pop fans who've suffered through half a decade of the genre's remission. The Liverpool four-piece have adopted the mantle of Maxïmo Park's A Certain Trigger and The Strokes' Is This It pretty faithfully. In fact, it's one great game of indie bingo throughout: Libertines, View, Maccabees, Kooks, Pigeon Detectives… They're all here on an exuberant debut that somehow manages to feel more mid-'00s than the 'Cha Cha Slide' in a pair of Heelys. But if that puts you off, it shouldn't. Young Chasers is an album of virulent, sunkissed indie that looks set to become the soundtrack to many a summer. The band's flagship single and album focal point comes in the form of 'T-Shirt Weather' - a would-be smash hit, tailor made for the year's festival circuit. It's impossible to resist, and represents the highpoint in the band's nascent career. It's one of the bright moments on an album studded with strong tunes: There's a 'boys about town' feel to most of Young Chasers , thanks in part to Kieran Shudall's Mersey-inflected delivery, but they show their sensitive side on the elegant 'Deserve This' . Elsewhere, opener 'Get Away' gets the album on the front foot, and 'Stuck In My Teeth' is pretty close to sugary indie-pop perfection. The band recently spoke to Digital Spy , saying: "We're all massive fans of vinyl so we were really keen to make it feel like two sides almost, so the middle fades away a little bit like a real old school vinyl." This is certainly the case - as the album middles out, 'My Love' and 'Deserve This' bring the album's intensity down, before The Vaccines-esque title track, (side two track one as it were) starts things off again with a bang - it's an effective way of maintaining the album's momentum. There's much to like on Young Chasers , but it's not faultless. It's frequently lyrically naïve and clunky ( 'Best Years' : "Please take me out tonight/And lie with me tonight" - Alex Turners they ain't) and there's a lack of thematic substance, but the tunes are strong enough that you shouldn't be turned off by it. While the album represents a clear and well-formed sound (not bad for a band who've only been together since 2013), a little sonic variation from the dueling guitars and four to the floor 3-minute wonders wouldn't go amiss. But the straightforward set up rarely irks - in fact, it adds to their charm at times. Ultimately, Circa Waves have produced some fine indie-pop. Although Young Chasers is attempting to reinvent the wheel somewhat, it could go some way to re-energise a waning genre.
