Listen kindly to our prayers, O Lord, and, as our faith in your Son, raised from the dead, is deepened, so may our hope of resurrection for your departed servants also find new strength. 2 LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Wisdom 3:1-9

The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. For if before men, indeed, they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality; chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself. In the time of their visitation they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks through stubble; they shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord shall be their King forever. Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love: because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with his elect.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 22 (23):1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6 James D. Wetzel (b. 1987)

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. You spread the table before me

In verdant pastures he gives me repose. in the sight of my foes;

Beside restful waters he leads me; you anoint my head with oil;

he refreshes my soul. my cup overflows.

He guides me in right paths Only goodness and kindness follow me

for his name’s sake. all the days of my life;

Even though I walk in the dark valley and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord

I fear no evil; for you are at my side for years to come.

with your rod and your staff

that give me courage.

3 SECOND READING Philippians 3:20-21

Brothers and sisters: Our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself.

TRACT Chant, mode viii

Absolve, Domine, animas Absolve, O Lord, the souls

omnium fidelium defunctorum of the faithful departed

ab omni vinculo delictorum. from every bond of sin.

V. Et gratia tua illis succurrente, V. And by the help of your grace may they

mereantur evadere judicium ultionis, be enabled to escape the judgment of punishment,

et lucis aeternae beatitudine perfrui. and enjoy the bliss of eternal light.

GOSPEL Matthew 5:1-12a

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

4 LITURGY OF THE

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON

Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae, Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory,

libera animas omnium fidelium deliver the souls of all the faithful departed

defunctorum de manu inferni from the clutches of hell

et de profundo lacu: and from the deep pit;

libera eas de ore leonis, deliver them from the lion’s mouth;

ne absorbeat eas tartarus, let not Tartarus swallow them up,

ne cadant in obscurum: nor let them fall into darkness;

sed signifer Michael but may the standard-bearer Saint Michael

repraesentet eas in lucem sanctam: bring them into the holy light:

Quam olim Abrahae promisisti, which once you promised to Abraham

et semini ejus. and to his seed.

V. Hostias et V. Sacrifices and prayers

tibi, Domine, offerimus: to you, O Lord, we offer;

tu suscipe pro animabus illis, receive them on behalf of those souls

quarum hodie memoriam agimus: whom we commemorate today;

fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam. grant them, O Lord, to pass from death to life:

Quam olim Abrahae promisisti, which once you promised to Abraham

et semini ejus. and to his seed.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Look favorably on our offerings, O Lord, so that your departed servants may be taken up into glory with your Son, in whose great mystery of love we are all united. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

5

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord.

In him the hope of blessed resurrection has dawned, that those saddened by the certainty of dying might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come. Indeed for your faithful, Lord, life is changed not ended, and, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven.

And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim:

9 NOTES ON THE LITURGY

A Requiem is the Mass for All Souls’ Day, for funeral Masses, and for Masses offered for the deceased. The term ‘Requiem Mass’ is taken from the incipit (first phrase) of the of the Mass, ‘Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine’ (Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord), in the same way that Gaudete and Laetare Sundays are named.

The Church Universal exists in three levels: the Church Militant (those living on earth, battling sin); the Church Triumphant (those in heaven); and the Church Suffering (or the Church Expectant – those in Purgatory). In Purgatory, the power of prayer consumes the dross of temporal sin that had not been sufficiently shed during the soul’s life on earth to enter heaven immediately. As a spiritual work of mercy, it is the responsibility the Church Militant to pray for these souls who no longer have the power to seek intercession on their own.
