Within these pages, we see her shift shapes from a daring young wild child to the youngest horse trainer and one of the few female trainers ever licensed, to the wife of a wealthy and well-positioned man, to the charmer of royalty to the aviator of a solo flight across the Atlantic. As a child, she ran rampant with the young boys of a nearby Kenyan tribe and was in awe of the older male warriors. The story of the rise to prominence of America's most influential black leader. Unfortunately, he turned out to be a violent drunk. She replied she was filled with fear, but she did not give up. Beryl was then brought up by her father who let her run free on the farm and no governesses or school could tame the wild Beryl and she was barely seventeen when she married for the first time.     KENYA IN COUNTRY INFORMATION GEOGRAPHY Kenya lies on the equator and shares common borders with Tanzania and Uganda, which make up the region of ‘East Africa’. Its location allows for access to Kenya’s beautiful beaches and the Indian Ocean, Kenya’s wild plains and mountain ranges and its enchanting rift valley. Kenya is roughly the size of Texas or Spain. PEOPLE There are 52 tribes in Kenya each with their own tribal language though most people in the country speak Kiswahili as well as their own tribal language. English is the commercial language; therefore, it is commonly spoken in the major towns and at all lodges and hotels. CLIMATE Kenya is on the equator therefore we do not have major seasons. The climate is very pleasant and variations in altitude and terrain can create contrasts. Generally, in the Highlands the climate is cool and temperate; elsewhere the temperatures can reach approximately 35’C during the day. The coast is quite humid and balmy. Over most of the country there are two rainy seasons: • The “short rains” which occur from late October through November • The “long rains” which occur from late March to early June • It is perfectly possible to visit Kenya during the rainy season, few roads are affected, the park is fresh and green and there are fewer people and vehicles. Rain usually falls in the late afternoon preceded by bright, sunny and fresh days • July and August are the coolest months and are often overcast especially in the morning • December-Mid March is the warmest time of the year PASSPORT/VISA All tourists entering Kenya must have a tourist visa, which can either be obtained through the Kenya High Commission or via the e-visa portal on www.ecitizen.go.ke.

    LANDS OF LEISURE: RECREATION, SPACE, AND THE STRUGGLE FOR URBAN KENYA, 1900-2000 By Caleb Edwin Owen A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History-Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT LANDS OF LEISURE: RECREATION, SPACE, AND THE STRUGGLE FOR URBAN KENYA, 1900-2000 By Caleb Edwin Owen The movement of people to cities has been a significant trend in the recent history of Africa; in the year 2000, the urban population in Africa superseded the rural. African cities are nonetheless underrepresented and misunderstood in historical scholarship. The predominant narrative of the city and urban life, particularly in the post-colonial context, has been one of impoverishment, social disjuncture, and state failure. My dissertation challenges this metanarrative, highlighting how non-elite Kenyan actors, through their struggles for public parks, playgrounds, and other spaces of leisure, had a stake in urban life and contributed to the production of the city. This dissertation highlights the role of recreation as a governing and community interest that shaped the development of urban policy and land use in Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya’s two largest cities. Through allocation of land for clubs, the state affirmed its authority as an arbitrator of multiple interests and constituencies. During the 1940s and 1950s, the state, viewing African boredom as a cause of social delinquency, promoted the development of new spaces of leisure— social halls, playing fields, and public gardens. Rather than reaffirming the state’s position as the paternalistic guardian of African interests, these spaces were sites of social and cultural negotiation between urban Kenyans and colonial welfare officers.

She took off at Abington, in England, on 4th September, to reach New York after 21 hours, through fog and rain. She was the first woman to cross the ocean nonstop alone, and the first person to do it from East to West, against the prevailing winds2. It is true that, with her Messenger, a Percival Vega Gull, she was forced to an emergency landing on a swampy terrain in Nova Scotia, at Cape Breton. The press, however, soon transformed her into a star: the historic flight made newspaper headlines, and the record- breaking aviatrix fired the imagination of the public. She was a beau- tiful and elegant lady, her many love affairs were much debated, arousing the general curiosity, and she was admired for her skills but also for her unconventional way of life. Wedged between two cul- tures, the African and the European, she experienced different yet parallel lives and she refused to conform either to African or to Euro- pean conventions and social rules3. Born in Leicestershire in 1902, at only two she had arrived in Kenya with her parents; in that British colony, at Njoro, about 70 miles from Nairobi, her father, Charles Clutterbuck, a high-born army officer who breeded and trained racehorses, had set up a farm4.
