Tailgating activities filled the parking lots south of university blvd., including a tent and concession area adjacent to the football practice field, the Panther Den. Fans also lined the route of the Panther Prowl, cheering the team as they made their way from the Denius Student Center to the Varsity Training Center in advance of the game. Sept. 7, we literally “kicked off” the year with a win in our inaugural football game, beating the Stetson Hatters 20-13. Our young men played with great spirit and energy. I toss most of them aside, but I always find I hold up on Florida Tech Today and end up reading at least half the articles. The content is interesting and varied, the design and layout are snappy and modern, the graphics are grabby. I basically rank it with MIT’s Technology Review and Stanford Magazine. Sometimes I even get show ideas from it. So congratulations on a job well done. The Club, which started out as a circle consisting of Peirce‘s own students in his logic class, held the total of 43 meetings, with 110 presentations delivered, of which 33 were classified as principal papers. These presentations, as we document in this paper, testify the club‘s impact on the development of the methodology of sciences in the late 19th-century United States. Of particular interest is the close relation of the new and emerging scientific approaches to philosophical, methodological and logical issues discussed by the Club‘s members.

NOTES INTRODUCTION On September 10, 2009 twenty-three representatives from the corporate sector and business organizations in Austin, Texas convened to share their insights about the need for professional-level language and cultural skills in their companies, be it for global or domestic operations. Participants contributed to the Austin Language Summit which was co-sponsored by The Language Flagship, an initiative of the National Security Education Program at the U.S. Department of Defense; and by the University of Texas, Austin and the Texas Language Roadmap initiative being coordinated there. Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.
