Jacques Offenbach will always be associated with music which is tuneful, but frivolous. Yet he was also a serious writer and composers from Lehar to Gershwin are indebted to him for the impetus which he gave to musical comedy. Much of his work satirised the socialites of the glittering Second Empire in Paris. Nevertheless, they adored him and his music. Although he was an untiring worker, he also led a glamorous life. Peter Gammond gives a highly readable account of Offenbach's life and his musical achievements. Much of his work satirised the socialites of the glittering Second Empire in Paris. Nevertheless, they adored him and his music. Although he was an untiring worker, he also led a glamorous life. Peter Gammond gives a highly readable account of Offenbach's life and his musical achievements. The text is lavishly illustrated and a catalogue of Offenbach's work is included with notes on principal early productions. This is one of a series intended to provide a brief though thorough review of a composers life and works. The author successfully meets the criteria for inclusion in that series through a comprehensive, clear, and interesting story-like approach to the personal life and career of Jacques Offenbach. In addition to endowing his work with a personalized style which makes it very much like speaking to a learned friend over afternoon tea, the illustrations, particularly photographs of some of the figures appearing in the story and caricatures of Offenbach himself, add a welcome dash of flavoring to the story. This is not intended to be a study in depth nor a critical review but a work premised on agreement that Offenbach is worth knowing about. It will, certainly, stimulate one to the desire to see more of his operettas as a light hearted approach to life offered by a serious master of effervescent music with librettists who provided him with appropriate vehicles for the creation of gaiety in the audience. Siegfried Kracauer's biography of the composer Jacques Offenbach is a remarkable work of social and cultural history. First published in German in 1937 and in English translation in 1938, the book uses the life and work of Offenbach as a focal point for a broad and penetrating portrayal of Second Empire Paris. Offenbach's immensely popular operettas have long been seen as part of the larger historical amnesia and escapism that pervaded Paris in the aftermath of 1848. But Kracauer insists that Offenbach's productions must be understood as more than glittering distractions. The fantasy realms of such operettas as La Belle Hélène were as one with the unreality of Napoleon III's imperial masquerade, but they also made a mockery of the pomp and pretense surrounding the apparatuses of power. At the same time, Offenbach's dreamworlds were embedded with a layer of utopian content that can be seen as an indictment of the fraudulence and corruption of the times. This edition includes Kracauer's preface to the original German edition, translated into English for the first time, and a critical foreword by Gertrud Koch. Jacques Offenbach (20 June 1819 – 5 October 1880) was a German-born French composer, cellist and impresario of the romantic period. He is remembered for his nearly 100 operettas of the 1850s–1870s and his uncompleted opera The Tales of Hoffmann. He was a powerful influence on later composers of the operetta genre, particularly Johann Strauss, Jr. and Arthur Sullivan. His best-known works were continually revived during the 20th century, and many of his operettas continue to be staged in the 21st. The Tales of Hoffman remains part of the standard opera repertory. Born in Cologne, the son of a synagogue cantor, Offenbach showed early musical talent. At the age of 14, he was accepted as a student at the Paris Conservatoire but found academic study unfulfilling and left after a year. From 1835 to 1855 he earned his living as a cellist, achieving international fame, and as a conductor. His ambition, however, was to compose comic pieces for the musical theatre. Finding the management of Paris's Opéra-Comique company uninterested in staging his works, in 1855 he leased a small theatre in the Champs-Élysées. There he presented a series of his own small-scale pieces, many of which became popular. In 1858, Offenbach produced his first full-length operetta, Orphée aux enfers ("Orpheus in the Underworld"), which was exceptionally well received and has remained one of his most played works. During the 1860s, he produced at least 18 full-length operettas, as well as more one-act pieces. His works from this period included La belle Hélène (1864), La vie parisienne (1866), La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein (1867) and La Périchole (1868).

It is typical of the tall tale that everything in it is the subject of hyperbole, and in this characteristic, it bears relation to the “fish story” or “whopper,” in which a fisherman’s exploits are exaggerated for dramatic or humorous effect.
