Climate Change Communication in Late-Night Comedy Television Serena A. Ingram Abstract This thesis explores why traditional climate change communication often fails in the mainstream news media and how late-night comedy television circumvents these problems. These late-night shows provide humorous news coverage that holds politicians and the press accountable for enabling denialist rhetoric. The first chapter sources data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication to outline the issues of climate change and public understanding of climate science. The second chapter describes how rhetorical analysis can identify effective or ineffective climate communication strategies. It also discusses the emotional factors that surround climate change, and how humor strengthens communication and unifies individuals toward a common goal. The third chapter addresses the issue of politically spun news and information biases in climate reporting. It details how political figures influence news coverage of climate change and spin the news to reinforce their own agendas. The fourth chapter provides examples and analysis of climate change related segments from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update.” The fifth chapter applies the principles of late-night comedy and climate change communication to potential government policy and more mainstream television news.

    To mark International Human Rights Defenders Day, the United Nations Regional Information Centre, the Human Rights Regional Office for Europe, and the European Union present: Jaha's P romise The screening will be introduced by Birgit Van Hout, Regional Representative for Europe, UN Human Rights Office, and will be followed by a panel discussion with: Patrick Farrelly Co-Director 'Jahar's Promise' Patrick worked with Michael Moore in the 1990s producing his award-winning satirical series, TV Nation and the Awful Truth. His 2005 HBO documentary ‘Left of the Dial’ (about the ill-fated launch in 2004 of the first liberal radio network, Air America featured Al Franken, Rachel Maddow, Marc Maron, and Janeane Garofalo) was an Emmy Award nominee. 'Voices from the Grave’, a film about the Northern Ireland Troubles won Ireland’s Best Documentary award in 2010. ‘Nuala’, a 2012 film he made about the Irish writer Nuala O’Faolain won Best Irish Film at the Dublin Film Festival and awards at the Vancouver and Palm Springs film festivals. Marjeta Jager Deputy-Director General for International Cooperation and Development, European Commission Marjeta is currently Deputy Director General in DG DEVCO. She has been working in the Commission since 2005, starting as Director for Security in DG TREN and later being Director for international energy and transport files and institutional affairs, as well as Head of Cabinet of the Transport Commissioner. Before joining the Commission, Marjeta was working since 1991 for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and she was the first Deputy Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the EU.

    PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES MIKE O’MALLEY (Executive Producer & Showrunner, Writer- 201, 207, 210) Truly a multi-hyphenate, Mike O’Malley got his start in front of the camera hosting Nickelodeon’s “Get the Picture” and the iconic game show “Guts”. His success continued in television with standout roles in “Yes Dear”, “My Name Is Earl”, “My Own Worst Enemy”, “Justified”, and his Emmy®-nominated, groundbreaking performance as ‘Burt Hummel’ on the hit show “Glee”. Mike’s feature work includes roles in Eat Pray Love, Cedar Rapids, Leatherheads, Meet Dave, 28 Days, and the upcoming Untitled Concussion Project starring Will Smith which will be released Christmas 2015. Also an accomplished writer, Mike wrote and produced the independent feature Certainty which he adapted from his own play. In television, Mike has served as a Consulting Producer on “Shameless” and is in his second season as creator and Executive Producer of “Survivor’s Remorse” for Starz. LEBRON JAMES (Executive Producer) LeBron James is widely considered one of the greatest athletes of his generation. James’ extraordinary basketball skills and dedication to the game have won him the admiration of fans across the globe, and have made him an international icon. Prior to the 2014-2015 season, James returned to his hometown in Ohio and rejoined the Cleveland Cavaliers in their mission to bring a championship to the community he grew up in.
