GYMNAST 10 GYMNAST 11 INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW BOBBY, YOU GET THE CALL TO TRY GYMNASTICS, WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST THOUGHTS? “Straight away I thought it was a really good idea. Everyone loves gymnastics and watches it on the telly thinking wow I’d love to be able to do that. I think with gymnastics, because it is using your own body it looks achievable or at least some of it does, everyone wants to BOBBY be able to pull off a trick to impress their mates. I didn’t hesitate to take up the opportunity to give it a try. I didn’t really know what to except the first time I walked in to a gym, I guess I was a little nervous but mostly excited LOCKWOOD to get started - like a little kid really! From the first forward roll, then a dive forward roll you are constantly challenged FROM TUMBLE TITLE TO and ask different questions of yourself – I really like that, every day being different.”

GYMNASTICS FANATIC CRAIG, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT THAT GYMNASTICS IS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL? “I think it’s massively important that people can see “real hen BAFTA winning star of CBBC’s Wolfblood series Bobby Lockwood got the invite people” doing gymnastics. There’s a stereotype that’s to take part in the BBC’s ‘Tumble’ he didn’t hesitate to give gymnastics a try. The 21 W says gymnastics is for little kids or for people that train -year-old had never given the sport a try before but the promise of improved fitness and the hard 6-7 hours a days to make the Olympic Games and potential to learn some impressive new skills was enough to sign him up not just for the series people forget about what the majority of gymnasts love - that he won - but for life. Bobby has continued to keep up his gymnastics training as he has about the sport, the fun, the chance to get fit, the chance fallen for the sport so we caught up with him, along with Olympian and top Tumble judge to learn tricks. I remember watching the celebs training Craig Heap at an adult gymnastics class at Camden Gymnastics Club. before Tumble and you can see them just grow and grow in confidence as they learn more and more and got more comfortable, it reminded me of why I fell in love with gymnastics. Gymnastics can be challenging but is always rewarding and fun.”

AND BOBBY, HOW DID YOU FIND THE TRAINING PHYSICALLY? “Before I started in gymnastics I was told I had literally no core body strength, I’d done a bit of running and some general gym work but nothing like gymnastics. I remember even a couple of weeks in my body shape was already changing, I was losing weight and gaining so much strength but the thing is it didn’t feel like a struggle, didn’t feel like I was having to fight through training like when I was in a cardio gym. With gymnastics you are using your own body weight and doing such fun and crazy things you notice less how hard you are working. Every single day I was doing something different and now fitness wise I’m a changed person, I can literally train every day I have so much energy, I’ve never been fitter.”

GYMNAST 12 GYMNAST 13 INTERVIEW

CRAIG IT SEEMS LIKE BOBBY HAS FALLEN FOR GYMNASTICS!? “I think gymnastics is a great form of self-expression, to show what you can do physically, it’s very simple, just you. As Bobby says you just get absorbed by it, any exercise makes you feel great but with gymnastics you get that added excitement of the tricks and the skills that keep you really enthusiastic. I see lots of people either getting back into gymnastics having done it as a kid or starting for the first time and it’s a big eye opener for them. It’s not a sport in cold, battered, old buildings, you can come to places with foam pits, harnesses, bouncy sprung floors and try what you want to try. That’s really important for teenagers and adults, gymnastics isn’t just leotards and structured training it’s about working with your mates and a coach in a safe gym club, doing stuff that suits you.”

SO BOBBY YOU PLAN TO CARRY ON TRAINING? “Definitely, I’ve found the more I’ve done it the more I want to do more if that makes sense. You set yourself little goals and want to smash different skills that’s why I’ve carried on as there is so much more I want to try. I realise I’ve found a form of exercise I really enjoy, I can get into shape and I’m doing some really cool stuff that can hopefully even help me outside of the gym. I’d love further down the line to bring some of my gymnastics into my acting, who knows where that could take me. Even with my Wolfblood character Rhydian it would be so cool to throw in some stunts and further down the line in films and things, it would be awesome.”

CRAIG AS ALWAYS YOU GET THE LAST WORD… “I think Bobby says it all really. He hasn’t had to carry on training, he won the Tumble series and that could have been it but he’s carried on purely because he wants to – that proves everything for me. He’s having fun, he’s not slogging away on a tread mill, he’s not having to be massively competitive, he’s with a coach who’s his mate and he’s trying stuff out - brilliant.”
