Plagued by the nightmares of his past and yearning for freedom, the Ghost of Sparta would do anything to be free of his debt to the gods. He is on the verge of losing all hope when the gods give him one last task to end his servitude. He must destroy Ares, the god of war.But what chance does a mere mortal have against a god? Armed with the deadly chained Blades of Chaos, guided by the goddess Athena, and driven by his own insatiable thirst for vengeance, Kratos seeks the only relic powerful enough to slay Ares . a quest that will take him deep into the mysterious temple borne by the Titan Cronos! From the black depths of Hades to the war-torn city of Athens to the lost desert beyond, God of War sheds a brutal new light on the bestselling video game and on the legend of Kratos. Great book for fans of the video game series, and this particular game that its based on. It gives more details about why Athena wanted Kratos to kill Ares and explains that she persuaded the other gods (and how) into helping Kratos by giving him powers or weapons. She did not persuade Zeus, who knew what Athena was doing, but he helped Kratos (as both himself and the gravedigger) regardless as he wanted Kratos to become the God of War. Some things are omitted. For example, in the game, he meets Hades who gives him the Army of Hades magic power. Thats omitted. And in the game, Athena gives Kratos the Blades of Athena after he takes the throne as the new God of War. That is also omitted. He instead receives Athenas Blade in the beginning of the second book. Hermes, who wasnt in the game, appears in the book and informs Athena about various things relating to Kratos, such as when Kratos tried to commit suicide. For those who have never played the games, or this particular game that its based on, its still a good and fun book. It is tribute to Dickens, though, that the reader is disappointed and pained to see the loss of some characters, especially, in this novel, two who had such great potential. However, the subject matter and the strange plot was not wholly interesting to me, but that in itself is just a matter of personal taste. • Amazons in 17Th Century English Drama
Athens Journal of Humanities & Arts - Volume 1, Issue 2 – Pages 147-156 Women in Arms: Amazons in 17th Century English Drama By Margarete Rubik This paper investigates the portrayal of Amazons in a variety of seventeenth century English plays. Sword women combining male connoted aggression and female beauty functioned as a female dream of empowerment as well as a misogynist nightmare. Hence the image of such 'masculine' women was mutable and could assume a number of different characteristics: Amazons could be portrayed as chivalrous and cruel, glamorous or denaturalized, chaste or lecherous. Humourous pictures of martial women exist side by side with hostile ones attacking the unruliness and insubordination of women and their lust for men. The fate of Amazons in seventeenth century drama is generally either death on the battlefield or marriage and submission to patriarchal rules. There are a few rare examples of dutiful wives still combining marital and martial virtues, but more often these female warriors only lay down their arms at the end of a play, out of love. Despite their prowess, the women always lose the single combat with a worthy male antagonist – usually the very man they love. In the central, sensual moment of revelation, the woman's helmet falls off and her hair falls loose. In plays featuring women in male disguise, the relationship between the lovers is often charged with homoerotic overtones: the hero is passionately attracted to the supposed boy-soldier. Androgynous figures like the Amazons also raise the question whether femininity and masculinity are inborn qualities or the products of education.

  • Greek Gods & Goddesses
Greek Gods & Goddesses The Greek Gods and GodessesMyths https://greekgodsandgoddesses.net/olympians/ The Twelve Olympians In the ancient Greek world, the Twelve great gods and goddesses of the Greeks were referred to as the Olympian Gods, or the Twelve Olympians. The name of this powerful group of gods comes from Mount Olympus, where the council of 12 met to discuss matters. All 12 Olympians had a home on Mount Olympus and that was where they were most commonly found. HADES, the god of the Underworld, preferred to live there, and POSEIDON often chose to stay in his palace under the sea. Most of the other Olympians would be on Mount Olympus year round unless they were travelling. HESTIA used to be one of the Olympians, but the constant fighting and bickering between the gods annoyed her and she eventually gave up her seat to the god of wine, DIONYSUS. Even though she left the council, Hestia still kept a home on Mount Olympus. APHRODITE was on the council but, in most Greek mythological stories, her husband HEPHAESTUS was not. At the famous Parthenon temple in Greece, there is a statue of each of the 12 Olympian gods. Hades does not have a statue, but Hephaestus does. The question of who the 12 Olympians are really depends on who is telling the story. Nobody is truly sure if Hades of Hephaestus can be classed as the Twelfth Olympian. So, because of the way Greek myths were told and retold in different ways, there are actually 14 gods and goddesses who can be considered as an Olympian god.

  • The Reception of Amazons in Wonder Woman
Paradise, Bodies, and Gods: The Reception of Amazons in Wonder Woman This summer’s epic block buster, Wonder Woman, is a feast of visual delights, epic battles, and Amazons. The young Diana, “Wonder Woman,” is, we quickly learn, no ordinary Amazon. As Diana is a god, her superhero feats are not surprising, but even the rank and file Amazons of Wonder Women’s Themiscyra live up to their ancient reputation of being faster, smarter, and better than men (Lysias 2.4). In ancient Greek lore, Amazons fought like other mortals, even though they were called the “daughters of Ares,” the god of war. This epithet is probably metaphorical, telling us of the bellicose nature of the Amazons. The Amazons of ancient Greek lore seemingly existed to make war, whereas their counterparts in Wonder Woman have been put on earth by Zeus for a different purpose: to bring peace by defending all that is good in the world. In fact, rather than being the “daughters of Ares,” they are his sworn enemies. In this paper, I will explore the reception of the Amazons in Wonder Woman by comparing and contrasting Greek texts and imagery to the film’s depiction of the Amazons. I will discuss the controversies surrounding whether the film, through its depiction of powerful women, embraces feminism or exploits women by exposing their bodies to the viewer’s gaze. I will assert that, regardless of one’s stance on the said controversy, the movie’s portrayal of Amazons’ bodies is not unlike that of ancient Greek art, which is even more revealing.

  • War and the Warrior: Functions of Ares in Literature and Cult1
War and the Warrior: Functions of Ares in Literature and Cult Alexander T. Millington UCL Dissertation submitted for the degree of PhD in History 2013 1 I, Alexander Millington, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This dissertation presents a new interpretative synthesis of the sources relating to the cults, identities, and functions of the god Ares, focusing on the Archaic and Classic periods. An apparent dichotomy is identified: in many respects, the evidence suggests that Ares must have been a very important god throughout much of the Greek world throughout the Archaic and Classic periods (and beyond), but in other respects the evidence suggests that he was not. I argue that this dichotomy does not derive from changes in the popularity, relevance, or nature of the god, as has been proposed. Instead, I argue that the elements of Ares’ cults and representations which suggest that Ares was unpopular or unimportant derive from those which made him important and continually relevant. I argue that because Ares was identified with war, attitudes towards the god directly reflect Greek attitudes towards war. War’s importance as an element of Greek life, and the god’s power as a causal force with it, led to deep respect for Ares, reflected by widespread cult, and a place among the great Olympians. But the wild, destructive, and unpredictable nature of war, which Ares represented, meant that he was not a regular recipient of large-scale celebratory cult.
