By solving a complete set of Maxwell’s equations, the propagation constants and effective radii depending on geometrical parameters are numerically calculated. By declining atrade-off between propagation length and light confinement, high quality hybrid modes which can travel a long range of 120–200휆 with a subwavelength effective radius are obtained at the optical wavelength. These modesin one-dimensional cylindrical waveguides should have potential applications in nanoscale optical device designs. • THE BIRTH of the CHINESE POPULATION: a STUDY in the HISTORY of GOVERNMENTAL LOGICS by Malcolm Thompson a THESIS SUBMITTED IN
THE BIRTH OF THE CHINESE POPULATION: A STUDY IN THE HISTORY OF GOVERNMENTAL LOGICS by Malcolm Thompson A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) June, 2013 © Malcolm Thompson, 2013 ABSTRACT It was only in the early twentieth century that China discovered that it had a population, at least if a population is understood not as a number of people but instead in terms of such features as relative levels of health, birth and death rates, sex ratios, and so on—that is, as an object with a specific rationality that can be managed and improved. In 1900, such a conception of the population did not exist in China; by the 1930s, it was utterly pervasive. How did this transformation take place? This dissertation argues that it occurred at the level of techniques of governing and systems of knowledge production, and explains it from the perspective of changes in the institutional and epistemological forms by which interventions into other people's activities are organized. The installation of populationist practices into China is tracked in four sites: 1. The problem of “race efficiency”—formalized in this period as the cost in “race energy” of producing a given increment to a population—and analyses of the effects of different kinds of social organization on the production of life. 2. The institutional division of population registration into censuses (“statics”) and vital statistics (“dynamics”)—in a word, the formation of a statistical system based on mechanics.

  • Foreignization and Domestication --- on the Translating of Main Characters’ Nicknames in Two Translations of Shui Hu Chuan
International Journal of Business and Social Science Vol. 4 No. 13; October 2013 Cultural Factors in Literary Translation: Foreignization and Domestication --- On the Translating of Main Characters’ Nicknames in Two Translations of Shui Hu Chuan Lin Yang Foreign Languages College of Inner Mongolia University No. 235, Da Xue Road W. Saihan District Hohhot, Inner Mongolia P.R. China. Abstract Approaches to cultural factors involved in translating the nicknames of one hundred and eight main characters in Outlaws of the Marsh or All Men are Brothers, with strong Chinese cultural characteristics may be divided into two methods: SL (Source Language) culture-oriented or foreignization and TL (Target Language) culture- oriented or domestication and a good translation version should find a reasonable “meeting point” because the purpose of translating such classic literary work is not only to make foreigners know Chinese culture but also to make them appreciate and understand the novel under the condition of the readability of the novel. Key words: cultural factors; literary translation; foreignization; domestication I. The Artistic Charm of Main Characters’ Nicknames in Shui Hu Chuan (Outlaws of the Marsh or All Men Are Brothers) In Shui Hu Chuan, there are one hundred and eight brave fellows assembling in Liang Shan Marsh. They were from different social stratum at that time and they are all people’s idealistic heroes. Shi Nai’an, the author of the novel is a master of creation and a master of giving nicknames as well. Lifelike brave fellows and their nicknames become a unified entity. After reading the novel, one will feel that Shui Hu Chuan is really a picture gallery of a superb collection of characters while a nickname is the pupil of every picture.

  • Teaching “Shi Jin the Nine-Dragoned” from Water Margin Rebecca A
Teaching “Shi Jin the Nine-Dragoned” from Water Margin Rebecca A. Benz Saint Thomas Academy September 2, 2016 Sophomore English Curriculum Unit Nine-day Unit Introduction While writing this lesson plan, I had my own students in mind. I teach at a boys’ Catholic military college prep school just outside of St. Paul, Minnesota. I find my sophomore students respond well to many different types of literature, but they particularly love stories that relate adventures. I envision what is presented here as one piece of a larger Outlaws in Literature unit. Several of the lessons presented here could be broadened to embrace wider reading of the stories and histories of outlaws from around the world. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t spend as much time on one excerpt as I’ve outlined here but might rotate through the different activities over several years of teaching the story. Lesson Objectives Students will explore the place of the outlaw in literary arts and learn that this type of hero exists in East Asian folklore and literature just as it does in this west. Along with “Shi Jin the Nine- Dragoned,” students will read “The Tale of Hong Kiltong” from Korea and possibly an excerpt from “A Gest of Robyn Hode” to connect the East Asian literature to Western tradition. In future years this could expand to outlaw fiction from other traditions. Students will consider the morality presented in the story. They will examine how the corrupt society forces everyone else – Wang Jin, the bandits, and Shi Jin himself – to rebel in order to survive.

  • The Water Margin Podcast. This Is Episode 5. Last Time, We Were
Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 5. Last time, we were introduced to Shi (3) Jin (4), who, thanks to his tattoos, had the moniker Nine Dragons. He honed his fighting skills under the tutelage of Wang Jin, the former drill instructor of the imperial guards. After Wang Jin left and his father died, Shi Jin became the head of his household. Then, he caught wind of a group of bandits from Huayin (2,1) Mountain who were probably going to start coming around his village asking to “borrow” his stuff, so he got his fellow villagers to start preparing for that eventuality. Sure enough, pretty soon, one of the bandit chieftains, Chen (2) Da (2), aka the Stream-Leaping Tiger, came calling with 150 men, with the expressed purpose of putting this young punk Shi Jin that he had heard so much about in his place. When Shi Jin’s workmen informed him of this, he was right in the middle of tidying up his weapons and horses. So he had his men sound the alarm, and 300-some villagers immediately gathered at Shi Jin’s manor with spears and staffs in hand. As for Shi Jin, he put on a ridged turban, a vermilion coat of mail, an iron breastplate and backpiece, an embroidered black robe, green boots, and a leather belt. He wore a bow and a quiver of arrows and wielded a three-pointed, double-edged saber with four holes and eight rings. By the way, I have linked to an image of this weapon on the website for this episode, in case you’re wondering what it looks like.

  • The New Theory of Heroism in Water Margin Ran WEI School of Humanities and Social Sciences, China Jiliang University, Hangzhou
2016 3rd International Conference on Advanced Education and Management (ICAEM 2016) ISBN: 978-1-60595-380-9 The New Theory of Heroism in Water Margin Ran WEI School of Humanities and Social Sciences, China Jiliang University, Hangzhou. China [email protected] Keywords: The Water Margin, Heroism, Self-worth, Townsfolk Consciousness. Abstract. The Water Margin and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms were once engraved together into Yingxiongpu in the Ming dynasty. Compared with the orthodox heroism of "salvation of the world" expressed in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the heroism in Water Margin embodies the distinct characteristics of the times, more affected by townsfolk's ideas, tending to take self-value as its core and pursuing maximized spiritual and material interest, which presents the new characteristics that go against the traditional concept of hero. The Water Margin [1] and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms have been engraved together as Yingxiongpu in Ming dynasty. "Water Margin and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms" tell a lot of stories about wisdom and loyalty, buyers regret that two books are not issued together [2] It is thus clear that what this two books have in common is that they create numerous portraits of heroes bearing the characteristics of wisdom and loyalty. The difference is the heroes created in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms are all generals and ministers, while the heroes created in Water Margin are mostly from the underworld, including farmers, fishermen, butchers, the executioners, junior officers and so on. Therefore, the concept of civilian class has a deeper influence on the heroism in Water Margin, reflecting the distinct characteristics of the times.

  • The Water Margin Podcast. This Is Episode 83. Last Time, the Bandit
Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 83. Last time, the bandit chieftains of Peach Blossom Mountain, Double Dragon Mountain, and White Tiger Mountain had joined forces to attack Qingzhou Prefecture, where one of the chieftains, Kong Ming, was being held prisoner by Prefect Murong and the general Huyan Zhuo. The bandits sent Kong Ming’s little brother Kong Liang to Liangshan for help, since he was friends with Song Jiang. Song Jiang immediately agreed to help. He introduced Kong Liang to the leader Chao Gai and the other chieftains, and told them why he had come, and Chao Gai was totally on board. “The heroes of the other two mountains are acting with such honor, and you are friends with the Kong brothers, so how can we not go?” he said to Song Jiang. “Brother, you have led several campaigns in a row. This time, you stay and guard the base, and I will go in your stead.” “No, brother,” Song Jiang said. “You are our leader; you must not leave the base lightly. This is my affair, and since Kong Liang has come so far to request assistance, we cannot refuse, or his friends will not feel good. I would like to take a few brothers with me and make a trip.” Before he finished speaking, everyone in the hall declared, “We are willing to follow you anywhere and do whatever we can to help you!” Song Jiang was delighted. That day, he treated Kong Liang to a welcome banquet. At the same time, he mobilized five battalions totaling 2,000 men and led by 20 chieftains.
