Contrary to popular belief, Brian did not play officially for Keyworth United until the 1985/86 season and his professional career was ended, except that is for two ‘unofficial’ appearances under assumed names.

Stubbsy started out as an inside forward but was converted into a centre half. He had a rugged style and standing 6ft 2ins tall, weighing 12 stones, he usually dominated opponents in the air and was unflinching in the tackle and was more than useful in the opponents penalty area for dead ball situations.

He dropped down to non league when signing for Grantham Town FC in November 1981 to play with several ex County colleagues and then became Player/Manager of Calverton Miners Welfare FC in January 1983 and thereafter joined Keyworth United as Player/Assistant Manager before returning as a player at Heanor Town FC under Kevin Hector.

The Stubbs family had very close ties with both Keyworth United FC and the Keyworth Cricket Club and Brian was a very handy batsman himself for the club. Father Archie was an inside forward and Uncle Arthur a centre half in the team immediately after the 2nd World War and brothers David, a goalkeeper who had trials with Arsenal, John and Michael all featured for Keyworth during the 1960/70s.

A hard working centre forward, Frank blossomed at Forest and was capped twice by England and scored 2 goals for them on his debut against Wales in 1965 and also played for a Football League XI but a subsequent broken leg put paid to his chances of being considered for the World Cup squad and he was never the same player and eventually moved onto Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in March 1968 (32apps/15gls) and then within a year to Derby County FC (45apps/15gls), and in November 1971 to Mansfield Town FC (56 apps/15gls) before dropping into non league in 1973 with King’s Lynn FC as player/manager and then as a player at Burton Albion FC.

Jack was an outstanding half back and after being selected to represent the Notts Junior League at the City Ground against the Irish Junior League on 15 April 1905, was signed from Keyworth FC by Nottingham Forest FC on professional terms in August of the same year and made his debut against Everton FC on 23 December 1905 and went on to make a record 535 competitive matches for them (432 in the Football League with 9 goals, plus 75 and 1 goal during the First World War, plus 28 FA Cup apps and 1 goal).

On 3 September 1910 in the Football League, Jack played for Forest in the first ever match played at the “Meadow Lane Ground” against Notts County FC in front of 27,000 people paying £755 in a 1-1 draw – the ground was then known as “The County Ground”. (Match card right).

Jack was strictly a one club man and resisted offers to move to bigger clubs. He took over as Captain from 1919 and led Forest to triumph in the final of the 1st World War Victory Shield in that season. He also picked up Division Two League championship winning medals for the 1906/07 and 1921/22 seasons and for the latter received a commemorative gold watch from the committee of the Forest club.

Jack, who was slim, quick and neat on the ball and could play in any position except goal, favoured right or left half back and finished his career at Sutton Town FC where he picked up a winners medal in the 1923/24 Notts FA Senior Cup final.

Forest had provided a ‘Benefit’ Match for Jack on 10 December 1921 against South Shields FC (now Gateshead FC) and he played his last game at Burnley FC on 4 November 1922 aged 38.

He became a Vice President of Keyworth United FC in 1936 and rumour has it that he offered sponsorship in return for the club changing it’s name to Normanton & Keyworth FC, which they did and remained thus until reverting back to Keyworth United in June 1947. Jack remained a VP until 1950.

Jack was a prominent cricketer with Keyworth Cricket Club and during the 1910 season he was selected to represent Nottinghamshire Club & Ground on 12 occasions during the season, scoring a total of 171 runs and taking 5 for 135 runs. He also played with Notts Forest CC and had a spell of coaching in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Jack died in Tollerton on 9 November 1963.

William (born 1874) a goalscoring centre forward was selected to play for the Notts Amateur League representative team in 1900 and the youngest brother Albert (born 1888) was also a prolific scorer for Keyworth FC but lost his life in Flanders in 1917 during the First World War. Jack’s brother in law Newman Bycroft Armstrong (born 1886, died 1978) was also a cricketer with Keyworth CC and later a long serving Bingham RDC Councillor and a JP.

ARMSTRONG, JOHN ‘JACK JUNIOR’ Jack Armstrong was born in Keyworth on 26 March 1915, the son of the great Nottingham Forest footballer Jack Armstrong.

He followed a family of sportsmen, his grandad John (born 1846, died 1927) and his own father Jack (born 1884, died 1963), his uncles Thomas (born 1972), William (born 1874) and Albert (born 1888) who lost his lift in Flanders in during the First World War when Junior was only 2 years old. His mother was also an Armstrong and her father Samuel (born 1849) and brothers Henry (born 1873), Sydney (born 1879) and Newman Bycroft Armstrong (born 1886) were also good sportsmen as was cousin Stanley (son of Sydney).

Jack ‘Junior’ (photo right) signed amateur forms for Nottingham Forest FC on 17 February 1933 thus following in the footsteps of his illustrious father Jack Armstrong. He is described in the Nottingham Evening Post as being 17 years old, 5ft 11ins tall, weighing 11 stones and a left winger.

For ‘Jack Junior’ this was a hard act to follow and he featured prominently for Normanton & Keyworth FC in the late 1930s and was a member of the formidable Keyworth United FC 1948/49 Realm League Cup Final winning squad and the Realm League championship winning teams of 1946/47 & 1947/48 and served as Club Captain in season 1946-47.

‘Jack Junior’ also played football for West Bridgford FC and a number of regimental representative teams during the World War Two and was a very useful cricketer with both Keyworth CC and in the Border League with Kimberley CC.

Albert first played with Radford YMCA and in the 1947/48 season with Nottinghamshire Boys through the National KO County Cup competition to a semi final against Lancashire Boys alongside Jimmy Badder before they both joined Keyworth United and where Albert was an outstanding centre half in their Realm League championship triumphs in 1947/48, 1948/49 and 1949/50 and Notts FA Junior Cup win in 1948, plus Realm League Cup success in 1949.

Nottingham Forest were monitoring Albert’s progress and he had a spell with them as an amateur but after returning from National Service in Hong Kong in 1950 he signed as a professional with Bury FC in March 1950 but failed to win a regular place in their line up after making only four first team appearances and transferred to Bournemouth & Boscombe AFC who switched him to the full back position and he made 86 appearances for them between 1953 and 1958 before moving on to Southern League Weymouth FC where he made just 1 appearance before taking over as Manager for a short period.

Albert also played cricket with Keyworth CC.

OLDHAM, ARTHUR George Arthur Oldham was born in Keyworth on 1 March 1940, the son of former player and local milkman James Oldham.

A pint size forward, he emerged from the 1954/55 youth team and made his debut for the reserves aged 14 years and then the first team in the 1955/56 season against Aspley Old Boys. He began the 1956/57 season in the first team before signing with Notts County FC and played immediately for their ‘A’ team then Reserves but struggled with injuries and missed almost a complete season. He then played for the Nottingham Forest FC reserve team during the 1958/59 and then Peterborough United FC reserves before joining Ilkeston Town FC from 1960 to 1962 before joining Arnold St Marys FC who then became Arnold Town FC and apart from a short spell under Peter Taylor (Brian Clough’s sidekick) at Burton Albion, remained at Arnold until moving to play in Australia with the NSW club Newcastle FC for two seasons where he played against many visiting European clubs including AS Roma.

Arthur returned to Arnold for the 1967/68 season and stayed with them until re-joining KUFC as player/manager for the 1971/72 & 72/73 seasons before moving as player/coach to Bromsgrove Rovers FC and then to Kimberley Town for the 1974/75 season as just a player. The following season he spent with Eastwood Town before returning to Keyworth United FC as Manager for the 1977/78 season, in the early year still playing and he remained in charge until leaving after a dispute with the committee at the start of the 1989/90 season, ironically a season after he had been granted a Testimonial in the 1988/89 season.

He quickly lifted KUFC into the top division of the Notts Alliance League and built a formidable squad of players which claimed the 1984/85 Notts Alliance League championship and they were always competitive in the Notts FA Senior Cup and played in the national FA Vase competition in seasons 1984/85 & 85/86. Many of the players winning Notts FA and Notts Alliance League representative honours and Arthur managed the Notts FA XI from 1983 to 1987 during which time they were twice Midlands Counties champions and twice runners up. Two players, David ‘Biddy’ Riley and Mick Waitt signed for professional clubs, Nottingham Forest FC & Notts County FC during Arthur’s time in charge and a third player Simon Snow joined Preston North End FC only shortly after leaving the club for a brief spell with Oakham United. The club regularly attracted Forest, Notts County & Derby County to bring their first team squads to play pre-season friendlies against KUFC to the delight of local supporters. Arthur all the time was running a local building contracting business and he continued in football management after leaving KUFC, with Arnold Town FC and Quorn FC.

Arthur’s brothers Jack, Norman and Ted all played for KUFC in the years following the 2nd World War. Their father James, a big strapping guy had played full back for the club just after the 1st World War and Arthur’s two sons, Bobby (born in Australia) and Mitch both progressed through the club’s youth teams and Bobby enjoyed a good career playing on the right wing for many seasons, including during the Alliance championship year and nowadays can be found on the touchline coaching the Under 16s squad playing in the Notts Youth League Senior Division and Arthur’s grandson Sam Oldham was a member of the Great Britain 2012 Gymnastics Bronze Medal winning team.

He also had a spell coaching Pwllheli CC and played football for Porthmadog FC and was responsible for establishing the first green at the town’s Golf Course. Following Arthur’s death, his widow Sarah moved to Porthmadog to look after William whose wife had passed away in 1904. Sarah was the sister of Matthias Hodgett (b 1871) another Keyworth footballer & cricketer. PIKE, HERBERT ‘HARRY’ Herbert Pike was born in Keyworth in 1862, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Pike.

Herbert was usually known as ‘Harry’ and he played at centre half in Nottingham Forest’s first ever match in the Football Alliance League on 7 September 1889 against Walsall in a 3-1 victory but he was no longer with Forest when they first entered the Football League.

Between 1889 and 1891 Harry made 21 appearance in the Alliance League, scoring one goal and made 11 appearances in FA Cup matches and was the oldest of the three Pikes from Keyworth who all played for Nottingham Forest FC in the same match against Sheffield Wednesday FC at home on 4 January 1890 (together with wing half back Arthur and left winger Horace).

Harry had started with Keyworth FC as a goalkeeper in 1882 before converting to play in defence and was eventually signed by Forest but returned home to play for Keyworth again when he was released by Forest at the end of the 1890/91 season and was also a prominent member of the Keyworth Cricket Club whom he had helped to re-build down at their ground on Bunny Lane.

Harry’s older brother John Elliott Pike was born in 1860 and was also an outstanding footballer and cricketer. He emigrated in 1884 to live in Philadelphia, USA where he became a very prominent cricketer.

PIKE, HORACE Horace Pike was born in Keyworth in 1870 and lived in Main Street with his parents John & Julia Pike and his brother Shelton (b 1872) who was also a prominent Keyworth footballer & cricketer as was his Cousin William Lane Pike (b 1860).

Horace was the youngest of three Pikes from Keyworth who all played for Nottingham Forest FC in the same match against Sheffield Wednesday FC at home on 4 January 1890 (centre half Herbert, known as ‘Harry’ & wing half back Arthur were with him).

A pacey and clever left winger with a strong shot, Horace made his debut for Keyworth FC in 1885, a period when the name ‘Pike’ had become synonymous in the sporting circles of Nottingham, with the village of Keyworth.

Horace played a few games with Notts Swifts FC before undertaking trials at Beeston with Nottingham Forest and signed as an amateur at the age of 17 and went on to make his debut for them in a 2nd Round FA Cup replay against Chatham Town FC in February 1889 (drawing 2-2) and he scored during the subsequent 2nd replay when Forest lost 2-3.

His debut in the Football Alliance League came on 1 September 1889,away against Walsall FC in a 3-1 win – Harry Pike also featured in that match at centre half.

For his first two seasons he played as an amateur before signing a professional contract – his wage for the entire first season was £15.

Horace was outstanding for Forest when they won the Football Alliance League title in 1891/92, scoring 8 goals in 21 appearances and was in the first ever Forest team to appear in the Football League on 3 September 1892 away at Everton FC in a 2-2 draw and in the same season was in the team when Forest met Notts County FC in the Football League for the first time – a 3-0 victory for Notts in front of 16,000 spectators at Trent Bridge on 8 October 1892. Horace held his place in the Forest 1st XI until January 1896 and early in his career he had been seriously considered as a candidate for England international recognition but was thought to be too young, at the time.

His playing record for Nottingham Forest FC: Football Alliance League 1889 to 1892…59 appearances 29 goals. Football League 1892 to 1896…91 appearances 23 goals. Football Association Cup 1889 to 1896…19 appearances 4 goals.

Forest awarded Horace a ‘Benefit Match’ on 2 January 1897, a home league match against West Bromwich Albion FC and by then he was the oldest player with the club and only playing for the Reserve Team and usually scoring in most games. The benefit match was delayed 30 minutes due to fog and the playing surface was frozen but 6,000 spectators turned up to see Forest lose 0-1. HORACE PIKE continued… Featured below (left) are the Matchday Card/Programme – Corinthians FC versus Nottingham Forest FC, played at the Queens Club in West Kensington, London on 2 November 1895 (Horace Pike lined up on the left wing) and below (right) is his 1897 Notts FA Challenge Cup winners medal, won with Nottingham Forest FC.

An inside right, he came to the notice of Notts County FC who were deep in relegation trouble and very short of goals, so they signed William and he made his debut away against Middlesbrough FC on 5 April 1920 in a 2-5 defeat. No further opportunities came his way and he moved on to Coventry City at the end of the season, where he again failed to get any first team opportunities and moved on to Boston Town in February 1922.
