So says Dr. J.R. Deep Ford, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Sub Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean, who has indicated that the FAO is contributing to a major effort currently underway to push cassava production in the Caribbean. He noted that cassava’s versatility should not be discounted because it is an ideal crop for the production of food, animal feed, fuel and now even beer. Making a presentation at a symposium entitled ‘Moving Towards a Viable and Vibrant Agricultural Sector’ at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre which hosted by the Barbados Agricultural Society,Dr. Ford maintained the region has the crops and the knowledge needed to commer- cialise the products that can be made from such crops as cassava and breadfruit. His comments came as he said that cassava can be used to replace wheat in bread and that at least one brewery in region is set to launch a new beer in October of this year, which will be made from cassava. He said that the cassava variant will replace the high fructose corn syrup that is cur- rently employed. THE execution of an Iranian convicted of murder was halted at the very last minute in a dramatic scene this week when the mother of his victim forgave him as he stood on the gallows with the noose around his neck, according to Iranian media. The convict, identified by his first name Bilal, had been sentenced to death for killing a teenager, Abdollah Hosseinzadeh, during a street fight in the market of the northern Iranian town of Nour seven years ago, the ISNA news agency reported. At the time, both Bilal and Hosseinzadeh were around 17 years old, ISNA said. Bilal was brought blindfolded to the site of his planned execution Tuesday in a town square. He was stood on a chair on the gallows and the noose was put on his neck, according to pictures of the scene published by ISNA. But at the last minute, Hosseinzadeh’s mother, Samereh Alinejad, forgave him, after giving a speech to the crowd and then slapping Bilal in the face. Hosseinzadeh’s father helped take the noose off of Bilal, whose weeping mother hugged Alinejad in thanks, as seen in the photos. LAST Friday, 35 students hailing from Grantley Prescod Primary school and St. Matthews Primary School were given the free opportunity to test their Mathematics and English readiness for this year’s 11-Plus examination, which will be on May 6 this year. This Easter 11-Plus Assessment Exercise also saw the Caribbean Development Bank, donating six laptop computers to the initiative, as well as software from Aries Technology Inc. As noted by Rodney Grant, Chief Executive Officer of the Pinelands Creative Workshop, they have always promoted partnerships to development as one of the important pillars on which they must build in order to move forward. Explaining that the organisation had started looking at the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in 2000, he noted that they were just shy of the 15 year mark, however, it was recently drawn to his attention that some world development agencies were discussing the post-development agenda, and he ABOVE: Students from revealed that one of the ‘important imperatives’ that St. Matthew’s and had been decided to dive the post-2015 Grantley Prescod Development Agenda was ‘leave no one behind’, Primary Schoolsprepare which he further explained really resonated with him to take their first as- and this Common Entrance Examination initiative. sessment. “I wanted to coin this programme within that context; that in the development going forward, that AT LEFT: Rodney Grant, we must leave no one behind. For Grant, this initiative was one that he would like Courtney Ramsey, Sales to see continued at the national level. Hello! Though I have never had the honour of meeting Profes- sor Girvan I have been greatly inspired by his work. It is impossible to study Caribbean politics, economics or trade, and not encounter the professor’s brilliant work. Even recently in examining the impact of the Economic Partnership Agreement, I found his website an invalu- able resource. It was interesting to hear a senior parliamentarian lamenting the lack of interest by the wider public and especially young people in political affairs and parlia- mentary debates in the Wednesday April 16 Barbados Advocate. In my estimation, a lack of interest can partly be attributed to the quality of debate emanating from the august chamber, the conduct of our representatives and the extent to which meaningful solutions are pro- posed and articulated. The Tuesday April 15 editorial of this paper entitled ‘Engaging our Youth’ wonderfully summed it up when it said, “At the risk of ruffling some feathers, we cannot help but express the hope that the budding debaters (of the youth parliament) will only follow said example in form and not in style… too often the members of House of Assembly fail to live up to their titles, delivering speeches and making asides that are far from hon- ourable. We do believe there is ample room for them to lift the level of the debate to one that is worth emulat- ing.” Our youth parliamentarians have a chance to make their mark with the present opportunity given to them. Norman P. Girvan was a Jamaican professor and Let us hope they do so in a way which makes a strong politician. He died at the age 72 in Cuba on April 9th, and meaningful impact, worthy of emulation as the late 2014, after having suffered a fall in Dominica in early Professor Girvan undoubtedly did. 2014.

Let’s here it for the boys!

Here, Patrice shares with Archie, what it means to be a friend. Archie may have been the cripple, but ‘he’ stole the show! By Ashlee Cox

WHEN we at the HELLO! Youth Magazine first heard about the Musical, ‘13’, and caught a glimpse of the production, at the ‘SAANG! Dance. Act’ production, held by Operation Triple Threat (OTT) we just knew that it was a production we would like to see for ourselves! Yesterday, as we sat with some of the students of various secondary schools across the island, who came out to support their friends and to be entertained, we cannot say that we were at all disappointed. It was a great show, however, it was also plagued with some sound difficulties, which unfortunately took away from the experience a little bit, but the young actors pressed on and that got our attention! Here Patrice and Evan, have a heart to heart! The story, which has been billed as a ‘grown up story about growing up’, was written by Jason Robert Brown and is basically about a young boy The story, which has been billed who is about to turn that magical age of 13, but is forced to move from New York to a small town in as a ‘grown up story about Indiana where he finds it tough to make friends and survive the school year. growing up’, was written by Jason The storyline sees this young boy trying to align Robert Brown and is basically himself with the ‘popular’ students at the school, as he tries to get them to his party. As the story about a young boy who is about progresses, you see him dealing with the issues of peer pressure, bullying and thinking quickly on his to turn that magical age of 13, but feet. is forced to move from New York We see how easy it is to start a rumour, how quickly it can spread and what it really takes to to a small town in Indiana where make and keep a true friend. (From left) Kendra, is upset as ‘friend’ Lucy tries to talk her out of a certain date!

The Matinee, resonated very well with the students present, and told its story with a healthy dose of humour, and really good acting. This magazine, even heard many exclaim about the acting abilities of the students and the fact that this was a musical of Broadway standards, being produced and directed by Barbadians in Barbados. The musical, shows the star of the show, ‘Evan Goldman’, played by Chad Montplasir, as he struggles to become a man, and the journey that decision takes him in as his parents divorce and he has to reinvent himself in Indiana, with his new friends Patrice, Archie and Brett, to name a scant few.

Evan deals with bullying.

Did we mention that Evan is Jewish? That’s right, a Jew in Appleton Indiana! The Rabbis were a source For this magazine, which was present for of encouragement! the incredible Fame Jr, we were very impressed by the level of dedication and commitment to the characters we observed. They may have been a tad nervous as they began, but they gained confidence, really pushed, so that through their use of vocal ranges and tone as well as effective body language, and use of facial expressions, the audience had little choice but to be transported into the storyline, and as it all made its way through several unexpected turns, lots of intrigue, some suspense and a lot of truthful humour, we got a glimpse into some of the real things young teens think about, and got to see how ruthless they can be when they want something! In short, it was a great production and we are all ready to see it again this Saturday night at the Frank Collymore Hall!
