We called tonight to collect the Materials you were asked to have ready for the above survey. Will you please have these materials ready when we call back tomorrow? Thank you.

DEPT. OF URBAN DESIGN AND REGIONAL PLANNING 59 GEORGE SQ. EDINBURGH, 8

Dear Cumbernauld Resident,

On Friday, 23 May we left with you a questionnaire with 2 naps. These Were to be collected tonight. Because you are one of only 280 households selected from the over 5,500 in Cumbernauld we are very anxious to get back the questionnaire and maps you have after you have completed them. The time, money and effort being put into this survey are considerable but the most important part are the answers you give us - without then there is no survey. Won't you please have the survey material ready when we call back on Wednesday, 4 June or Friday, 6 Juno in the evening? If there are any reasons why you can not have the material ready at those tines could you please note then on this slip of paper and leave all. materials outside your front door? Thank you. Professor P Johnson-Marshall DipArch(L'pool¡ MA AR IRA ATM Rlli.4 DistTP 23 _May, 1969 667 1011, Extension 2432 H writing o; calling, p;case contact Dear Cumbernauld resident, This letter is to introduce a survey being carried out, under the supervision of the above department among 200 or so Cumbernauld households. Its purpose is to provide information about how you see and use the town and the local area where you live. There are three types of questions, each asked to provide some part of this information. It is therefore very important that you try to answer all of the questions. The first type of question simply asks you to place an `x' in a square beside descriptions when you think they fit certain places. The second type asks you to check a'yes'or 'no' answer or to write in a few words or numbers. The third type asks you to mark certain letters, numbers, lines or symbols on two maps.

We believe the instructions with the questions are fairly straightforward. kcat- ever, people sometimes have trouble reading a map so here are a few suggestions:

1) When you first pick up the map look for some named element with which you are familiar, such as a road or large building. 2) When you have found this element trace your way to the location of your building, just as you would go there, since this is one way you will be asked to use the map. 3) Trace the routes from your building to several other elements around the town with which you are familiar. Look at the map until you feel you know it fairly well. We would like only one adult member of the household to actually fill out the ques- tionaire, but after he has talked over all of the questions with the entire group. We believe that you will find answering these questions interesting, perhaps even fun. Just a few other things. First, you may be tempted to put off answering these questions or even not to answer them at all We understand that people often don't have time to answer a lot of questions. That is why we have tried to make them as simple and quick to answer as posssible. However, with only 200 of you selected out of over 5,000gwe are anxious to get as many answers back as possible. Second, we realize that some people don't care about giving out this kind of information because they think, "Oh well, why bother. I °11 never know the results anyway,K Xe don't want you to think this so, if you request it, we will send you a short, simple explanation of the survey results to show you how important your answers are. Finally, your answers are important, for it is partially by filling out ques- tipnaires that towns such as Cumbernauld can be built; with more of people's needs and preferences in mind.

We thank you for your attention to our requests. You answers will be treated in strictest confidence. Please put all materials in the envelope when you have fin- ished. All material will be collected on Friday evenin,., 0 D e.tr 1969. If you are away please leave the envelope in srour letter slot or just outside your front door.
