The sources involved here are Welsh and other Celtic tradition, Latin texts, French romances and other works from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Malory’s and Tennyson’s representation of the Queen, and finally Guinevere in the twentieth century in Bradley’s and Miles’s novels as well as in movies. The main sources in the first three chapters are of European origins; however, there is a focus on French and British works. There is a lack of study of German sources, which could bring different insights into the character of Guinevere. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the evolution of Queen Guinevere and to point out that through the works of Malory and Tennyson, she has been misrepresented and there is more to her than her adulterous relation with Lancelot. This essay is exclusively focused on Queen Guinevere and her analysis involves other characters like Arthur, Lancelot, Merlin, Enide, and more. First the Queen is only represented as Arthur’s unfaithful wife, and her abduction is narrated. We have here the basis of her character. Chrétien de Troyes develops this basic character into a woman of important values about love and chivalry. -

This work explores how the images of Arthur and other Arthurian characters (Gwenhwyfar, Llachau, Uthr, Eigr, Cai, Bedwyr, Gwalchmai, Melwas, Medrawd, Peredur, Owain, Luned, Geraint, Enid, and finally, Twrch Trwyth) depicted mainly in medieval Welsh prose tales are reflected in the works of poets during that period, traces their developments and changes over time, and, occasionally, has a peep into reminiscences of possible Arthurian tales that are now lost to us, so that readers will see the interaction between the two aspects of middle Welsh literary tradition. King Arthur was a legendary ruler of Britain whose life and deeds became the basis for a collection of tales known as the Arthurian legends. As the leading figure in British mythology, King Arthur is a national hero and a symbol of Britain's heroic heritage. But his appeal is not limited to Britain. The Arthurian story—with its elements of mystery, magic, love, war, adventure, betrayal, and fate—has touched the popular imagination and has become part of the world's shared mythology. The Celts blended stories of the warrior Arthur with those of much older mythological characters, such as Gwydion (pronounced GWID-yon), a Welsh priest-king. Old Welsh tales and poems place Arthur in traditional Celtic legends, including a hunt for an enchanted wild pig and a search for a magic cauldron, or kettle. In addition, Arthur is surrounded by a band of loyal followers who greatly resemble the disciples of Finn , the legendary Irish hero. -

GODDESS DETHRONED: THE EVOLUTION OF MORGAN LE FAY by DAX D. CARVER Under the Direction of Timothy M. Renick ABSTRACT In the Arthurian romances of the Middle Ages, the character of Morgan le Fay was transformed dramatically from her Welsh original, the goddess Modron. The effect was to vilify the enchantress so that medieval Christians would not be sympathetic to her character. This study consults the oldest available Welsh mythological and historical texts as well as the medieval romances surrounding King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Also consulted are some of the top contemporary Arthurian scholars. By unraveling Morgan’s transformation and the reasons for such change, it is revealed that medieval demonizing of old pagan deities was not limited to male deities. -

Fiction Excerpt 4: Guinevere and the Round Table On one of his adventures, Arthur had met the Lady Guinevere (/gwin*ә*veer/), daughter of King Leodegrance (/lee*oe*dә*grantz/). He had never forgotten her, though for a long time he had hidden his thoughts in silence. One day, he sent a train of knights to the court of King Leodegrance to ask for Guinevere’s hand in marriage. “This is the best news I have ever heard,” replied Leodegrance. “I shall send King Arthur a present that will please him: the round table that Uther Pendragon gave me, so grand that one hundred and fifty knights can sit around it.” When King Arthur heard that Guinevere was coming to be his bride, his heart filled with joy. He chose his best friend and chief knight, Sir Lancelot (LANCE-uh-lot), to ride to meet her and bring her on her way. It was a fine summer morning when Lancelot and Guinevere met. Guinevere rode on a white horse, bridled with gold. She was dressed in green and gold, more beautiful than any woman in the world, and she paused under a blossoming apple tree as Sir Lancelot approached her. He was dressed in a full suit of gleaming armor. From that moment, Lancelot and Guinevere were in love. But Lancelot served King Arthur, and Guinevere was to be Arthur’s bride. So Lancelot escorted the lady to Camelot, King Arthur’s home, where Arthur awaited his bride under a canopy, with flowers strewn all about. The marriage and coronation followed as soon as possible.
