Trophies Plus - Sponsor of Coaches Caring 20 MINNESOTA PREP COACH 2019 SCHOLAR SETH PETERSON Seth hails from Blooming Prairie High School and was a 3 sport athlete. He has faced plenty of adversity this past year when as quarterback for his football team he blew out his ACL. This injury and surgery kept him out of wrestling and baseball, but yet he continued to be part of both teams by assisting and cheering his teammates from the sidelines. He appreciated that he could play an important role with the teams. Sports have taught him that being a teammate in any capacity is better than not participating in sports at all. Seth plans to attend the University of St. Thomas and participate in sports once again after rehab. Seth was awarded the Past Presidents Scholarship Award,

EMMA BOTKER Emma graduated from Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley High school this year. Emma’s mom was a volleyball coach and her dad a basketball coach, so sports were always a part of their household. Injuries plagued her throughout her high school sports career but she learned to work hard in the off-season and push past the injuries. Sports helped her build relationships with teammates, her parents and her sister who she had the chance to play all three sports (VB, BB, SB) with her. Brice Hoffman said that Emma is a positive role model on the floor/ field and in the classroom as she maintained a 4.0 and was ranked #1 in her class. Emma plans to attend University of North Dakota this fall. Emma was awarded the Val Teichrow Scholarship Award.

HUNTER GONNERMAN A 3 sport athlete from Benson High School, Hunter had a view of athletics from a different seat than most kids. Hunter’s father a football, basketball and golf coach played a huge role in his life instilling the importance of faith, family, academics and athletics. Hunter was coached and taught by his dad, so as the kid of a coach/teacher, Hunter was able to experience what took place behind the scenes and it instilled enthusiasm, passion, work ethic and pride in each sport he participated in. His coach Roger Lindahl said, “There is so much to be said about a kid who gives a coach everything he has.” Hunter will attend Valley City State University this fall. Hunter was awarded the Darien DeRocher Scholarship Award.

ALLIE CRITCHLEY Allie plans to attend Valley City State University this fall after graduating from Dilworth- Glyndon-Felton. She also hails from a coaching family. She played sports with her sister, her dad was her basketball coach and her grandpa coached her through her AAU years. Her grandfather was her biggest fan following her on the radio, on scorebook live and would text her after every game congratulating her and of course giving her pointers on how to improve. He’s the one who bought her, her first basketball. Allie said one of the most influential parts of athletics for her was to be able to share it with her family and create memories to last a lifetime. Sports she said have taught her to work hard to achieve goals and learn how to deal with failure. Allie was awarded the Betsy Farness Scholarship Award. OWEN BOEREMA It was inevitable that Owen would play sports. He comes from a long line of coaches and athletes and they taught him at a young age to fall in love with sports. Athletics he said has taught him perseverance, discipline and leadership. A captain for 3 sports taught him how to manage different personalities and communicate with coaches, players and officials. Owen played basketball, baseball and ran cross country for Litchfield. Not only was he a 3 sport athlete but also ranked #1 in his class with a 4.0! Coach Wittrock said; “His positive attitude, trustworthiness, humility and desire are qualities that you rarely find in an athlete.” Owen will be attending the University of Northwestern in St. Paul this fall. Owen was awarded the Steve Kerzie Scholarship Award. MINNESOTA PREP COACH 21 RSHIP WINNERS TAYLOR NAAS Tara learned while being a 3 sport athlete in high school that time management, hard work and a positive attitude can take her wherever she wanted to go. She is a coaches daughter and had the unique and special experience to not only play for her dad but to spend that extra bonding time with him watching tapes, a rare opportunity other kids didn’t get. Growing up as a coaches daughter can be challenging, but has its rewards too. Sports have been a part of her life from an early age and found it to be important that she helped at camps, t-ball and little league. Taylor graduated from Mountain Lake this spring and will attend the University of Wisconsin-Stout in the fall. Taylor will receive the Kathy Frederickson Scholarship Award.

NOAH HEGLAND Noah graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School this spring and plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-River Falls this fall. Sports run deep in the Hegland household with his father being a 3 sports athlete, Division II Football player and now a high school coach. You can assume correctly that Noah spent a lot of time on football fields growing up, hardwoods in the winter and diamonds in the spring/summer. Noah said; “Sports have brought him obstacles and an abundance of memories that will last him a lifetime.” You also form a brotherhood that can’t be broken no matter the circumstance. In college Noah will pursue a degree in Crop and Soil Science and will continue his football career. Noah was awarded the the Howard E. Emerson Scholarship Award. RYAN HANSE Ryan graduated from Alden-Conger High School and was active in football, basketball, golf and clay target along with many other school activities (music, FFA and robotics). He had to learn to prioritize and create balance in his life in order to finish 2nd in his class with a 3.9 GPA! Coming from a small school it was important to participate in as many activities as you could to make your schools teams successful. Ryan’s athletic involvement started early when he attended his first State Basketball Tournament at 6 months old, by age 4 he got his first set of golf clubs and was a “ball-boy” for the varsity basketball team. Ryan will pursue a career in Agricultural Studies at Iowa State University. Ryan is the recipient of the Past President’s Scholarship Award. ABBEY MCDONALD Abbey is ranked number 1 in her class at Hibbing High school and participated in basketball and softball. Her Grandfather Bob coached basketball for 59 years and dad Joel now for 23! Of course there is basketball in her blood! She fell in love with the game at a young age by helping to rebound balls for her dad’s team and run the scoreboard. Due to her skills, she stepped into a varsity role in 8th grade. She surpassed both the girls and boys scoring records for Hibbing and has many other honors. Her senior year was capped off with a Section 7AAA title and a trip to the big show! It was her dream to play in a state tournament after watching film of her dad and coach winning the State title for Hibbing in 1991. Abbey plans to attend St. Cloud State University. She received the Past Presidents Scholarship Award. WHITNEY STEFFEL Whitney will attend the -Duluth after graduating from Park Rapids Area High School this year. Both her parents were coaches at various levels that introduced her to sports at an early age. She excelled in cross country and helped Park Rapids earn trips to state her 7th and 8th grade years. She commented, thou she said she wasn’t the best basketball player on the team, she did whatever it took to make the team better, even if that meant to cheer on my teammates from the bench. She said; “Sports have taught me to give everything I have, how to persevere when I want to quit, and what mentally tough means.” All while playing sports Whitney kept her nose in the books too and graduated with a 3.97. She was awarded the John and Mary Erickson Scholarship Award. 22 MINNESOTA PREP COACH about flow and strategy. We are losing possessions and losing chances for players to show their basketball IQ.
