To recap, this survey was undertaken to give the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith the perspective of the laity when evaluating the responses of bishops to their own survey on this subject, which they sent to bishops around the world in April 2020, with a deadline of 31st July. We were able to send our own report to the CDF with information from 364 dioceses, from 56 countries in six continents. The often heart-felt comments added to the online survey are among the most useful features of the report, alongside its record of various crucial facts about what is going on, concretely, in different dioceses. As readers will see, the comments represent the authentic voice of people on the ground, who have in many cases clearly been struggling with the practical difficulties of facilitating the Extraordinary Form for many years. They are not reluctant to praise their bishops, as well as many dedicated priests, when appropriate, but in many cases bishops and some senior clergy have not been implementing Summorum Pontificum with the spirit which was requested by Pope Benedict XVI: ‘Let us generously open our hearts and Summorum Pontificum. Wishloff: Spe Salvi INTRODUCTION In his very popular book Ishmael, author Daniel Quinn questions the sustainability of our civilization in a thought-provoking way. Quinn does this by asking the reader to consider the early attempts to achieve powered flight, and, more specifically, to imagine someone jumping off in “one of those wonderful pedal-driven contraptions with flapping wings.”1 At first, all seems well for the would-be flyer but, of course, in time he crashes. This is his inevitable fate since the laws of aerodynamics have not been observed. Quinn uses this picture to get us to assess whether or not we have built “a civilization that flies.”2 The symptoms of environmental distress are evident, so much so that U.N. Usually there is a stop in one of the major cities of the east coast in order to catch your trans-Atlantic flight to Paris. Saturday, March 22nd – After flying through the night, you’ll land at Charles de Gaulle International Airport. After collecting your luggage and passing through customs, you’ll transfer into the city, usually by train. On evening one, there’s a short time for resting and refreshing at the hotel before heading out into the city for dinner and some sightseeing. You will ascend the 58-story Tour Montparnasse for the best views of Paris as the sun goes down and the lights come on in the city. Sunday, March 23rd– You’ll visit the Royal Palace of Versailles, just outside of Paris. In addition to touring the palace itself, you’ll want to visit the gardens, since Sunday is the only day the world-famous fountains are turned on. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Grand and Petit Trianon, small palaces built by the king on the grounds of Versailles in order to escape the pressures of palace life. Also not to be missed is the village-like hameau of Marie Antoinette. Later, you’ll head back to Paris for dinner and a visit to the Sacré-Coeur Basilica in Montmartre, the bohemian quarter of Paris. In Montmartre, you’ll also visit the Place du Tertre, where an artist will paint your portrait for a price.

    Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite A Solemn High Mass celebrated in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass of the Roman Rite (according to the 1962 edition of the Roman Missal) is scheduled for Sacred Heart Cathedral on Sunday, September 15, 2019, 3:00 pm. Fr. Daniel Geddes from the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, Pastor of Holy Family Parish in Vancouver, will be the celebrant. As a simple explanation, in 2007 Pope Benedict XVI issued a document entitled “Summorum Pontificum” which gave priests anywhere around the world permission to celebrate the Mass using the 1962 Missal. In his letter to bishops concerning the document, he explained that the liturgical tradition of the Roman Rite incorporated two forms – the ordinary, which we celebrate regularly, and the extraordinary, to which many have continued to be devoted. Both forms belong to the Roman Rite and are to be seen as the continual flow of the 2000-year liturgical tradition of the Church. The pope emphasized there was no fracture of the tradition at the Second Vatican Council. Both forms are celebrated in Latin, although the current edition of the Roman Missal allows for vernacular languages to be used. The Apostolic Letter, Summorom Pontificum was issued on July 7, 2007 and carried an effective date of September 14, 2007. Hence, 12 years after the letter’s effective date, Mass will again be offered at Sacred Heart Cathedral in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Roma 15/05/11 La Instrucción Universae Ecclesiae de la Pontificia Comisión Ecclesia Dei, de 30 de abril del año del Señor de 2011 –memoria de san Pio V según el Misal de Pablo VI-, publicada el 13 de mayo –festividad de la aparición de la Virgen de Fátima-, sobre la aplicación de la carta apostólica motu proprio data Summorum Pontificum del Sumo Pontífice Benedicto XVI, del 7 de julio de 2007, empieza en su introducción afirmando que el motu proprio ha hecho más accesible a la Iglesia universal –universae Ecclesia- la riqueza de la Liturgia romana, destacando con ello la finalidad principal y logros obtenidos por el documento papal hasta el día de hoy. 1 Además recuerda la Instrucción que con dicho motu proprio el Vicario de Cristo ha promulgado una ley universal para la Iglesia –universae Ecclesiae-, con la que ha tenido la intención de dar una nueva reglamentación para el uso de la Liturgia romana vigente en 1962, reafirmando con ello el principio de deber de cuidado de la Sagrada Liturgia y aprobación de los libros litúrgicos que tienen los papas. Y que Summorum Pontificum constituye una relevante expresión del magisterio del Romano Pontífice y del munus –potestad- que le es propio, es decir, regular y ordenar la Sagrada Liturgia de la Iglesia y manifiesta su preocupación como Vicario de Cristo y Pastor de la Iglesia Universal. El texto de la Comisión vaticana vuelve a dejar claro lo afirmado por Benedicto XVI en la mencionada carta apostólica1, que los textos del Misal Romano de Pablo VI y del reeditado por última vez por Juan XXVIII, son dos formas de la Liturgia Romana, definidas respectivamente como ordinaria y extraordinaria: son dos usos únicos del único Rito Romano, que se colocan uno al lado del otro –no existiendo superioridad de uno sobre otro-.

    How and why has Pope Francis restricted the Latin Mass? “Chin up, it’ll work itself out,” I told my friend, Michelle. She was “despondent” at the news Pope Francis had abrogated Summorum Pontificum — the law by which Pope Benedict XVI liberalized the use of the 1962 liturgical books — and in fact had told me she “hadn’t felt such grief” since her father passed a little more than a year-and-a-half ago. My friend is a cantor at her very ordinary parish. She loves to sing for the Lord, and she teaches others to sing for him in the way the Church prescribes. She’s middle-aged and never married. She lost her mother too soon, and cared for her father until he went the way of all flesh. The Church is the center of her life. My friend is hurt. She is hurt in her sentiments, sure, but she is also hurt in her person — a loyal daughter of the Church, who has suffered alongside many of her fellows in personal devotion to an ancient and venerable form of public prayer, and now discovers the man to whom she has looked as a father in God is displeased with her attachment and suspicious of her loyalty to him. She isn’t wrong to feel that way, and she’s far from the only one. She reads a lot of the blogs and visits a lot of the websites that traffic in “news” about traditional worship, of interest to the communities devoted to traditional forms. Through the years, I’ve encouraged her to pay less attention to them.

The Roman Catholic Church, which had been until then tolerated outside of the law, has likewise obtained legal status. During the years of suppression, the Church had to struggle to maintain its very existence; now it is once again able to carry out freely its pastoral duties.
