JeanMichel Basquiat: An Analysis of Nine Paintings By Michael Dragovic This paper was written for History 397: History, Memory, Representation. The course was taught by Professor Akiko Takenaka in Winter 2009. Jean‐Michel Basquiat’s incendiary career and rise to fame during the 1980s was unprecedented in the world of art. Even more exceptional, he is the only black painter to have achieved such mystic celebrity status. The former graffiti sprayer whose art is inextricable from the backdrop of New York City streets penetrated the global art scene with unparalleled quickness. His work arrested the attention of big‐ shot art dealers such as Bruno Bischofberger, Mary Boone, and Anina Nosei, while captivating a vast audience ranging from vagabonds to high society. His paintings are often compared to primitive tribal drawings and to kindergarten scribbles, but these comparisons are meant to underscore the works’ raw innocence and tone of authenticity akin to the primitivism of Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Cy Twombly or, perhaps, even that of the infant mind. Be that as it may, there is nothing juvenile about the communicative power of Basquiat’s work. His paintings depict the physical and the abstract to express themes as varied as drug abuse, bigotry, jazz, capitalism, and mortality. What seem to be the most pervasive throughout his paintings are themes of racial and socioeconomic inequality and the degradation of life that accompanies this. After examining several key paintings from Basquiat’s brief but illustrious career, the emphasis on specific visual and textual imagery within and among these paintings coalesces as a marked—and often scathing— social commentary. -

CURRENTS Recent Art from East Tennessee and Beyond This ongoing installation examines recent developments in international contemporary art. It features a selection from the KMA’s growing collection of recent works by emerging and established artists currently working in East Tennessee and beyond. Currents serves as a chronological extension and geographic expansion of the KMA’s historical art display in the adjacent gallery, Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee. It is also designed to enable museum audiences to track the changing character of the region’s art community within an international context. The broad variety of works in the exhibition mirrors contemporary art’s seemingly countless threads of development. It reflects the desire of many artists to break from tradition and make objects inspired by their individual experience in the present day. Some use digital media or apply unorthodox combinations of techniques and materials. Others borrow images from the past or elements from earlier art traditions and reintroduce them in unexpected ways designed to spark new interpretive possibilities and cultural associations. In this way, Currents represents a vital educational resource through which local audiences can gain direct access to an increasingly global creative dialogue and follow its evolution. Reflections on the Art of Jean-Michel Basquiat
The Obscene and the Corpse: Reflections on the Art of Jean-Michel Basquiat Rajiv Kaushik Brock University This paper examines Jean-Michel Basquiat’s obsession with the marginal and the obscene - understood literally as the ob-scene. The context of a graffiti art, and particularly the glyphic character of graffiti art, allows the work to defy the ordinary logic of the picture frame in order to figure, rather than represent, indeterminate into it. Thus, Basquiat characterizes death and the dead body not in the light of a transcendent space but as prolonged into the depths of an alterity, an ob-scene in the sense of an alter-side that belongs to the scene. Basquiat’s paintings are obscene. They are obscene, not in the quotidian sense of the depraved, offensive or lascivious, but rather in the etymological sense of ‘the obverse side of the scene.’ Whenever the ob-scene is encountered, an otherwise concealed element of the specular has turned up or disclosed itself. What is obscene, it could thus be said, is the un-presented content that belongs on the other side of a present vision. It transgresses visibility, is no longer the visible, and moves out into a region of displacement and destabilization. The obscene, in this sense, articulates the anamorphic: the morphoses of a quotidian and so-called normative regard is subtended, subverted or returned back (ana-) to something ab-normal, in order that this previously hidden scene (often othered because of its taboo content we repress) may exhibit itself.1 As anamorphic, an obscene exhibition is thus a showing of what was previously hidden by the normative regard. -

Video Transcript: Stephen Hepworth, Director of Kiki Kogelnik Foundation, talks about the life and work of Kiki Kogelnik, and her exhibition 'Riot of Objects' at MOSTYN. Kiki Kogelnik was born on 22nd January 1935 in Southern Austria and grew up in the town of Bleiburg. Her father was an accountant, her mother was a schoolteacher. She was the middle of three children and was named originally Sigrid, Kiki was a nickname her elder brother Herwig gave her, and she later chose to adopt it, becoming Kiki Kogelnik. She initially studied at the Vienna Academy of the Applied Arts under the sculptor Hans Knesel, where she made the two early plaster sculptures included in this exhibition: Untitled Head and Untitled Figure in 1954. These iconic objects are reflective of a common post-war European sensibility, both figurative and reductively angular in form they evoke a melancholic pity and sadness. In 1956 she enrolled at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts to study under the painters Albert Paris Gütersloh and Herbert Boeckl. Her work was firmly rooted in the traditions of modernism, her paintings made with a palette of sombre colours and flat painterly forms. In 1958 she was awarded a grant that enabled her to travel to Paris, London, Dublin, Rome and Norway and with this her work became more spontaneous with looser more gestural marks. While on a visit to Paris in 1959 she met the artists: Cesar, Joan Mitchell and Sam Francis who she became involved, and later visited New York with in 1960. Relocating there permanently in 1961 taking up residence in his studio at 940 Broadway at 23rd Street just two blocks away from the legendary Chelsea Hotel. -

Introduction The association of art and disgust has been perennial. Populated by the likes of Polyphemus, Medusa and The Minotaur, classical legend is full of disgusting beings, while the Dark Ages served up Grendel, and into the contemporary period, we have creatures like Stephen King’s Pennywise and Clive Barker’s Rawhead Rex to round out our western, literary bestiary of abominable creatures. From fine art, we are entranced by portrayals of the last judgment, such as Michelangelo’s, by visions of Hell, like those of Bosch, and by installations exemplifying death and deterioration of the sort produced by Damien Hirst for the exhibition Sensations, or the huge pile-shaped fecal sculptures of the Viennese art collective Gelatin (as presented at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam). From the East, we find similar preoccupations with images of disgust – both literary and pictorial – as in the skeletal images of Durga/Kali bent upon murderous rampages, her necklace decorated with a string of bleeding, decapitated heads. Popular culture has whole genres whose predominant objects are disgusting, such as splatter-punk (e.g., Family Tradition, a novel by Edward Lee and John Phelan) and torture porn (such as movie series like Saw and The Human Centipede). Likewise, the currently ubiquitous, zombie apocalypses represented by televisual programs like The Walking Dead (based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore), which rule the airways. -
