Hong Kong – Works offered across our series of 20th and 21st Century Art sales on 24 and 25 May realised HK$1,983,506,250 / US$256,666,850, the highest ever sale total for the category in Christie’s Asia. The 20th and 21st Century Art Evening Sale totalled a record-breaking HK$1,585,290,000 / US$205,138,773, the highest ever Evening Sale total for the category, while the 20th and 21st Century Art Morning and Afternoon Session, as well as Mr Doodle: Caravan Chaos, together achieved HK$398,211,250 / US$51,528,077, the highest ever Day Sale total for the category in Asia.

EXCEPTIONAL PRICES ACHIEVED FOR EVENING SALE

The top lot across the sale series was Jean-Michel Basquiat's (One Eyed Man or Xerox Face) (previous page centre), which realised HK$234,290,000 / US$30,317,362 to become the second most valuable work by the artist to sell at auction in Asia. This follows the market-defining prices set at Christie’s in Hong Kong on March 2021 and New York on May 2021.

Temple at the Mountain Peak by Zhang Daqian (previous page left) achieved HK$209,100,000 / US$27,062,468, the second-highest price ever realised for the artist at auction, showcasing the resounding demand for the splash-ink pioneer.

The Evening also saw phenomenal results for: Potted Chrysanthemums by Sanyu (HK$118,645,000 / US$15,352,783) (above centre); 24.01.63 by Zao Wou-Ki (HK$76,280,000 / US$9,870,709) (above left); Nu couché à la libellule by Pablo Picasso (HK$62,540,000 / US$8,092,739) (upper right); alongside The Collector I by Adrian Ghenie (below right), which became the most valuable work by the artist to sell at auction in Asia at HK$65,975,000 / US$8,537,232.

STRONG MOMENTUM FOR FAST-RISING ARTISTS IN DAY SALE

The three Day sales achieved a combined sell-through rate of 95% with over 60% of lots sold above high estimates and a spectacular 174% hammer above low estimate.

George Condo led the Day sales fetching HK$22,450,000 / US$2,905,053 for Multicolored Portrait (first page right) from his ‘psychological cubism’ series, while remarkable results were achieved for Nicolas Party’s Still Life with an Empty Bottle (above left) fetching HK$9,250,000 / US$1,196,959. The Afternoon Session also set new artist records for I don't Deserve These Flowers by Shara Hughes (above centre) at HK$4,740,000 / US$614,655 and Untitled (Birdie Lovejoy) by Robert Nava (above right) acquired for HK$2,375,000 / US$307,237.

Mai Trung Thu’s L’Aube Nouvelle (New Dawn) (above left) led the strong selection of Vietnamese artworks on offer, which sold for five times its low estimate at HK$4,000,000 / US$517,604 in the Morning Session, alongside Le femme au panier (Lady with a Basket) by Le Pho (above centre), which realised almost four times its low estimate at HK$3,750,000 / US$485,254 and Houses by Bui Xuan Phai (above right), which fetched HK$1,625,000 / US$210,277, a world auction record for the artist.

Numerous works sold for multiples of their pre-sale estimates including Summer by Liu Ye (above left), which sold above its high estimate at HK$4,625,000 / US$727,881; Happy Zodiac by Tomokazu Matsuyama (above centre), which achieved HK$3,250,000 / US$420,553; and The Magician by Oli Epp (above right), which sold for over five times its high estimate at HK$1,000,000 / US$129,401, to set a world auction record for the artist.

MR DOODLE: CARAVAN CHAOS 100% SOLD

The standalone auction dedicated to young British artist Mr Doodle was a white-glove sale, with all works surpassing its pre-sale low estimates to total HK$5,668,750 / US$731,081. The top lot of the sale was Caravan Chaos: Side 3 Panel 6 which was enthusiastically sought-after by bidders to realise HK$725,000 / US$93,816, almost three times above its pre-sale high estimate.
