Swanepoel H.G.W.J. Schweickerdt Herbarium, Department of Plant Science, University of Pretoria, Pretoria 0002, South Africa Received 16 August 2010; received in revised form 23 November 2010; accepted 7 December 2010 Abstract Commiphora buruxa Swanepoel, described here as a new species, is known only from the Gariep Centre of Endemism, southwestern Namibia. It appears to be most closely related to C. cervifolia Van der Walt. Diagnostic morphological characters of C. buruxa include a viscous, cream-coloured exudate, variably simple to trifoliolate leaves, and a putamen covered by a small cupular pseudo-aril. Illustrations of the plant and a distribution map are provided. The species is known from less than 20 plants. © 2011 SAAB. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Motorcycle tour South Africa and Namibia, from Cape Town to Windhoek Motorcycle tour South Africa and Namibia, from Cape Town to Windhoek Duração Dificuldade Veículo de apoio 14 días Normal-Hard Sim Language Guia en,de Sim Namibia, a vast 830 thousand square kilometre expense of desert flanked by the icy Atlantic Ocean, is home to slightly less than 1.7 million citizens. That’s less than half the number of Cape Town residents. Unending roads stretch out as far as the eye can see under a sky that’s so big it can only be described as heavenly with space enough to truly breathe. The two-week trip starts in Cape Town and winds its way up our west coast to culminate in Namibia’s capital, Windhoek. With both on and off-road riding, the 2,100 miles city to city tour is an epic tribute to solitude and uninterrupted riding with out-of-this world scenery. Your on-road riding experience will be punctuated by some gravel road riding exploring such places as the mountainous Cedarberg region, the Northern Cape, one of the world’s oldest deserts as well as the Fish River Canon, the world’s second largest canyon. Approximately 50% of this tour is on dirt roads, some basic off-road riding skills are required. Itinerário 1 - - Cidade do Cabo - 0 Welcome. Almost all international flights arrive in Cape Town before midday. Our tour guide will meet you at the airport and taxi you directly to your hotel where you can freshen-up and perhaps have a light bite to eat.

  • One of Five West Coast, Low-Latitude Deserts of the World, the Namib Extends Along the Entire Namibian Coastline in an 80-120 Km Wide Belt
N A M I B I A G 3 E 0 O 9 1 L - O Y G E I V C R A U S L NAMIB DESERT Source: Roadside Geology of Namibia One of five west coast, low-latitude deserts of the world, the Namib extends along the entire Namibian coastline in an 80-120 km wide belt. Its extreme aridity is the result of the cold, upwelling Benguela Current, which flows up the west coast of Africa as far as Angola, and because of its low temperatures induces very little evaporation and rainfall (<50 mm per year). It does, however, create an up to 50 km wide coastal fog belt providing sufficient moisture for the development of a specialist flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the Namib. In addition, the lagoons at Walvis Bay and Sandwich Harbour are designated wetlands of international importance, because of their unique setting and rich birdlife, including flamingo, white pelican and Damara tern. Larger mammals like the famed desert elephant, black rhino, lion, cheetah and giraffe can be found along the northern rivers traversing the Skeleton Coast National Park. Geomorphologically, the Namib includes a variety of landscapes, including classic sand dunes, extensive gravel plains, locally with gypcrete and calcrete duricrusts, elongated salt pans, ephemeral watercourses forming linear oases, inselbergs and low mountain ranges. Along the coast, wind-swept sandy beaches alternate with rocky stretches, in places carved into striking rock formations (e.g. Bogenfels Arch). Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, the “Namib Sand Sea“ between Lüderitz and the Kuiseb River encompasses such well-known landmarks as Sossusvlei and Sandwich Harbour, while the fabled Skeleton Coast north of the Ugab River is notorious for its numerous ship wrecks.

Digital Terrestrial Television Infrastructure Rollout Environmental Impact Assessment - Nakop - 1 1. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT: NAKOP 1.1 INTRODUCTION The farm Nakop is privately owned, belonging to Mr and Mrs Tonnemacher. The farm is located approximately 5km east of the Namibian Border post and approximately 6km east of the nearest settlement which is called Ariamsvlei. The presence of the Namibian border post en route to South Africa contributes to a large average number of tourists passing through the town annually. 1.2 RATIONALE FOR SITE The position of the existing microwave tower at Nakop has very good coverage even beyond the Namibian border into South Africa, covering large parts of the south-eastern extremities of Namibia (Figure 1-1). This microwave tower is however very visible from the B3 road to South Africa. For this reason the proposed site is located close to the existing infrastructure but further back from the edge of the plateau to ensure that it is not quite as visible as the existing infrastructure. Figure 1-1: Predicted coverage of the existing microwave tower at Nakop. Digital Terrestrial Television Infrastructure Rollout – NBC EIA - Nakop August 2013 2 1.3 SITE DESCRIPTION Ariamsvlei is located at the foot of a plateau and as one approaches the Orange River approximately 40km south of the town, there is a sharp decrease in elevation. The surrounding area forms part of the Nama Karoo biome and comprises of a combination of small succulents and grass species. Although not particularly high in faunal diversity, the rocky side slopes of the plateau are an optimal niche for the occurrence of a variety of reptiles and birds.
