Low-dimensional representations of matrix groups and group actions on CAT(0) spaces and manifolds Shengkui Ye National University of Singapore January 8, 2018 Abstract We study low-dimensional representations of matrix groups over gen- eral rings, by considering group actions on CAT(0) spaces, spheres and acyclic manifolds. 1 Introduction Low-dimensional representations are studied by many authors, such as Gural- nick and Tiep [24] (for matrix groups over fields), Potapchik and Rapinchuk [30] (for automorphism group of free group), Dokovi´cand Platonov [18] (for Aut(F2)), Weinberger [35] (for SLn(Z)) and so on. In this article, we study low-dimensional representations of matrix groups over general rings. Let R be an associative ring with identity and En(R) (n ≥ 3) the group generated by ele- mentary matrices (cf. Section 3.1). As motivation, we can consider the following problem. Problem 1. In this article, we try to answer Prob- lem 1 negatively from the point of view of geometric group theory. The idea is to find a good geometric object on which En−1(R) acts naturally and non- trivially while En(R) can only act in a special way. Then the general linear group GLn(F ) is the group of invert- ible n × n matrices with entries in F under matrix multiplication. It is easy to see that GLn(F ) is, in fact, a group: matrix multiplication is associative; the identity element is In, the n × n matrix with 1’s along the main diagonal and 0’s everywhere else; and the matrices are invertible by choice. It’s not immediately clear whether GLn(F ) has infinitely many elements when F does. However, such is the case. Let a ∈ F , a 6= 0. −1 Then a · In is an invertible n × n matrix with inverse a · In. The subject of supersymme- try (SUSY) is a part of the theory of elementary particles and their interactions and the still unfinished quest of obtaining a unified view of all the elementary forces in a manner compatible with quantum theory and general relativity. Supersymme- try was discovered in the early 1970's, and in the intervening years has become a major component of theoretical physics. Its novel mathematical features have led to a deeper understanding of the geometrical structure of spacetime, a theme to which great thinkers like Riemann, Poincar´e,Einstein, Weyl, and many others have contributed. Symmetry has always played a fundamental role in quantum theory: rotational symmetry in the theory of spin, Poincar´esymmetry in the classification of elemen- tary particles, and permutation symmetry in the treatment of systems of identical particles. Supersymmetry is a new kind of symmetry which was discovered by the physicists in the early 1970's. However, it is different from all other discoveries in physics in the sense that there has been no experimental evidence supporting it so far. Nevertheless an enormous effort has been expended by many physicists in developing it because of its many unique features and also because of its beauty and coherence1. -

Projective unitary representations of infinite dimensional Lie groups Bas Janssens and Karl-Hermann Neeb January 5, 2015 Abstract For an infinite dimensional Lie group G modelled on a locally convex Lie algebra g, we prove that every smooth projective unitary represen- tation of G corresponds to a smooth linear unitary representation of a Lie group extension G] of G. (The main point is the smooth structure on G].) For infinite dimensional Lie groups G which are 1-connected, regular, and modelled on a barrelled Lie algebra g, we characterize the unitary g-representations which integrate to G. Combining these results, we give a precise formulation of the correspondence between smooth pro- jective unitary representations of G, smooth linear unitary representations of G], and the appropriate unitary representations of its Lie algebra g]. Unitary group - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unitary_group Unitary group In mathematics, the unitary group of degree n, denoted U( n), is the group of n × n unitary matrices, with the group operation of matrix multiplication. The unitary group is a subgroup of the general linear group GL( n, C). Hyperorthogonal group is an archaic name for the unitary group, especially over finite fields. For the group of unitary matrices with determinant 1, see Special unitary group. In the simple case n = 1, the group U(1) corresponds to the circle group, consisting of all complex numbers with absolute value 1 under multiplication. All the unitary groups contain copies of this group. The unitary group U( n) is a real Lie group of dimension n2. The Lie algebra of U( n) consists of n × n skew-Hermitian matrices, with the Lie bracket given by the commutator. The general unitary group (also called the group of unitary similitudes ) consists of all matrices A such that A∗A is a nonzero multiple of the identity matrix, and is just the product of the unitary group with the group of all positive multiples of the identity matrix. Buildings and Classical Groups Linus Kramer∗ Mathematisches Institut, Universit¨at W¨urzburg Am Hubland, D–97074 W¨urzburg, Germany email: [email protected] In these notes we describe the classical groups, that is, the linear groups and the orthogonal, symplectic, and unitary groups, acting on finite dimen- sional vector spaces over skew fields, as well as their pseudo-quadratic gen- eralizations. Each such group corresponds in a natural way to a point-line geometry, and to a spherical building. The geometries in question are pro- jective spaces and polar spaces. We emphasize in particular the rˆole played by root elations and the groups generated by these elations. The root ela- tions reflect — via their commutator relations — algebraic properties of the underlying vector space. We also discuss some related algebraic topics: the classical groups as per- mutation groups and the associated simple groups. I have included some remarks on K-theory, which might be interesting for applications. The first K-group measures the difference between the classical group and its subgroup generated by the root elations. The second K-group is a kind of fundamental group of the group generated by the root elations and is related to central extensions. In this context, the projective line over a skew field is treated in some detail, and possibly with some new results. Zalesski To the memory of Brian Hartley Abstract We suggest a new proof of Hartley’s theorem on representations of the general linear groups GLn(K)whereK is a field. Let H be a subgroup of GLn(K)andE the natural GLn(K)-module. Suppose that the restriction E|H of E to H contains aregularKH-module. The theorem asserts that this is then true for an arbitrary GLn(K)-module M provided dim M>1andH is not of exponent 2. Our proof is based on the general facts of representation theory of algebraic groups. In addition, we provide partial generalizations of Hartley’s theorem to other classical groups. Introduction In 1986 Brian Hartley [4] obtained the following interesting result: Theorem 1.1 Let K be a field, E the standard GLn(K)-module, and let M be an irre- ducible finite-dimensional GLn(K)-module over K with dim M>1. For a finite subgroup H ⊂ GLn(K) suppose that the restriction of E to H contains a regular submodule, that ∼ is, E = KH ⊕ E1 where E1 is a KH-module. Then M contains a free KH-submodule, unless H is an elementary abelian 2-groups. His proof is based on deep properties of the duality between irreducible representations of the general linear group GLn(K)and the symmetric group Sn. -

Spinors play a crucial role in supersymmetry. Part of their versatility is that they come in many guises: `Dirac', `Majorana', `Weyl', `Majorana{Weyl', `symplectic Majorana', `symplectic Majorana{Weyl', and their `pseudo' counterparts. The tra- ditional physics approach to this topic is a mixed bag of tricks using disparate aspects of representation theory of finite groups. In these notes we will attempt to provide a uniform treatment based on the classification of Clifford algebras, a work dating back to the early 60s and all but ignored by the theoretical physics com- munity. Recent developments in superstring theory have made us re-examine the conditions for the existence of different kinds of spinors in spacetimes of arbitrary signature, and we believe that a discussion of this more uniform approach is timely and could be useful to the student meeting this topic for the first time or to the practitioner who has difficulty remembering the answer to questions like \when do symplectic Majorana{Weyl spinors exist?" A key breakthrough in the pursuit of these exotic particles originated from Read and Green’s observation that the Moore-Read quantum Hall state and a (relatively simple) two-dimensional p + ip superconductor both support so-called Ising non-Abelian anyons.
