II. ACTIVITIES

1. Lamp Unto My Feet program presented a dramatization of Selma Hirsh's "The Fears Men Live By" on Sunday, February 10, 1957, CBS-TV, Channel 2, 10:00-10:30 A.M. Following the dramatization, Dr. Lyman Bryson, special consultant on educational programs, interviewed Dr. Morris N. Kertzer. 2. The Open Mind panel discussion of February 17, 1957 (WRCA-TV, Channel J+, 12:30-1:00 P.M.) dealt with civil rights progress during the past year. Panelists were Irving M. Engel, President of the AJC; Roy Wilkins, Executive Secretary of the NAACP; and Father John LaFarge, •L' Editor Emeritus of America. The Fund for the Republic has requested a kinescope of the program for consideration of a Robert Sherwood Award. 3. At the suggestion of the Director of the Division, Dorothy Gordon's N. Y. Times Youth Forum devoted a program to the discussion of youth's reaction to desegregation. The program was filmed in Louisville, Ky. and previewed in New York on February 6. It was shown on TV on February 17 and rebroadcast on radio February 23. We also cooperated on the February 21j. N.Y. Times Youth Forum program, "How Can Peace Be Achieved in the Middle East?" Students from Vassar, Harvard, Barnard and Manhattan participated.

Dorothy Gordon has indicated a willingness to plan a program based on our 50th Anniversary theme. It is scheduled for April lij.. We have also been asked to suggest a guest for this program, ij.. CBS "Invitation to Learning," an interview program based on the great classics, is considering Judge Proskauer as a guest on the program dealing with the Holmes-Pollock letters.

5. WOR-TV has Indicated an interest in our "Unfinished Business - USA" human relations film series. Expect to complete plans for the series in short time.

6. Submitted data on Judge Proskauer to NBC for consideration of his appearance on "Elder Wiseman" interview program.

7. Furnished script writer with background material for "Eternal Light" program of March 21). based on episode in life of Louis Marshall over the NBC radio network.

II. ACTIVITIES

1. For the past two months the Radio and Television Section has been concerned mainly with programs to commemorate the American Jewish Committee's 50th Anniversary. The following programs were pre- sented in connection with that event: 1. On Sunday, April llj., 1957, 21aflgjEBEQ P.M., the Columbia Broadcasting System presented "Ready, Mr. Rosewater?" over CBS-TV (Channel 2). This dramatization was based on the life of Edward Rosewater of Omaha, , one of the founders of the American Jewish Committee. As President Lincoln's telegrapher, Rosewater had the distinction of having flashed the Emancipation Proclamation over the wires to the world. 3. At the opening dinner of the 50th Anniversary Observance on Wednesday evening, April 10, we presented "Charapjtfion of Liberty" by Sylvia Berger, a dramatic tribute to Louis Marshall, the AJC's second President. The script was adapted from a program on the Jewish Theological Seminary's "Eternal Light" series, presented on March 2l\. in honor of the AJC's 50th Anniversary. We made suggestions and supplied background material to the writer. if. The Very Reverend James A. Pike, Dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City, invited Judge Joseph M. Proskauer to be his guest on the Dean Pike program of Sunday, April 7, 1957. /"

' " •"• • /I) ""• ""' •""" ' Dean Pike, his daughter, Cathy, and Judge Proskauer dis- cussed "The Role of the Jew in American Life." The program was telecast over the ABC-TV network (Channel 7) 5:00-^:30 PM New York time.

5. "Unfinished Business, U.S.A.", a film series dealing with human relations, is being televised for a 13-week period, Sundays from 1:00-1:30 P.M. by WOR-TV (New York, Channel 9) in cooperation with the American Jewish Committee. The first program was presented on April 7. Raymond Massey is serving as host for the series. The programs feature one or two of the most important effective films in the field of human relations.

On Tuesday, March 26, 1957, 9:30-10:00 P.M., the "New World A'Comin radio program (Station WMCA) presented "You Hold the Key," the program in AJCfs very successful "The People Take the Lead" radio series which dramatizes the meaning of the international declaration of human rights. The presentation was entitled "Forty Minutes by Train."

8. On April 17, frcm 11:1^-5 P.M.-12 Midnight, "Tonight," NBC-TV Network program, televised a Passover Seder from Rabbi Morris Kertzer's home. Dr. Kertzer's entire family participated.

9. Radio coverage of the 50th Anniversary included the following: a. "Tex and Jinx" NBC - Half-Century Banquet Proceedings b. "So They Say" CBS - Dag Hammarskjold's speech. c. NBC - Dag Hammarskjold's speech.

2. Other work of the Section for March and April included: 1. Northwestern University Reviewing Stand interested in our suggestion that they schedule a panel xldt discussion on civil rights. At their suggestion, we submitted a list of questions which could serve as the basis for the discussion and a suggested list of qualified participants,

2. Participated in a panel discussion on religious broadcasting at the Westinghoust-Conference on Public Service Programming in Boston.

3. Prepared a listing of AJC's Radio and TV highlights for 1956 for Joint Defense Appeal. Zj.. Supplied the Division Against Discrimination of the New Jersey Department of Education, Newark, with sets of "The People Take the Lead" recordings and our 8 TV spou announcements.

5. Supplied JDA with Bund and Father Coughlin recordings for AJC ]pOth Anniversary script.

1. Met with representatives of the New York Board of Rabbis and Director of Religious Broadcasts for CBS to discuss Fifth Annual Rabbinical TV Workshop which will take place on Wednesday, June 12. The Columbia Broadcasting System will be host for the event. Tentative plans include an address by Louis Cowan, Vice-President of CBS; session on the central analysis of the TV sermonette, luncheon with Rev. Everett C. Parker as guest speaker; a production laboratory headed by

Dr. Lyman Bryson, consultant on Educational Programs for CBS; and a panel discussion on "A New Dimension for the Rabbis." 2. Arranged to have disc of various sound effects made for JDA 50th Anniversary script.

3. Arranged to have records of 50th Anniversary Half-Century Banquet proceedings made for Mr. Blaustein. i|. As a result of complaints from viewers, arranged for screening of

film, "The Trial of Pontius Pilate" at NBC. Staff members discussed film with head of Public Affairs Department.

7. Rabbi Morris N. Kertzer was active participant at Institute for Educa- tion by Radio-TV held in Columbus, Ohio on May 9 and 10. In addition to Dr. Kertzer, panel members on "The Place of Religion in Broadcasting" included Richard Walsh, Director of Radio-TV for the National Council of Catholic Men, and Rev. Everett C. Parker, Director, Office of Communication, Congregational Christian Churches. 8. The First Annual Rabbinical TV Workshop sponsored by the Capitol District Board of Rabbis and the American Jewish Committee, in coopera- tion with Station WGY and WRGB, was held in Schenectady on Wednesday, May 22. The program included an address by Dr. Morris Kertzerj attendance at a live TV broadcast; a tour of the TV studio; luncheon with Pamela Ilott, Director of Religious Broadcasts for CBS, as the luncheon speaker; a critical analysis of the TV sermonette; and finallv, a pane}, discussion on the ABC's of religious broadcasting. i • - i The sessions were well attended. i 9. II. ACTIVITIES

1. The Fifth Annual Rabbinical TV Workshop, sponsored by the American Jewish Committee's New York Chapter and the New York Board of Rabbis in cooperation with the Columbia Broadcasting System, was held on Wednesday, June 12 at the CBS Studios. The program included an address by Louis Cowan, Vice-President v_. ' of CBS; an analysis of the TV sermonette by Dr. George Crothers, CBS Director of Public Service Broadcasts; lunch with Rev. Everett Parker, Director of Communication of the Congregational Christian Churches; greetings by Sig Mickelson, CBS Vice- President of News and Public Affairs; a production laboratory led by Dr. Lyman Bryson, Counselor on Public Affairs for CBS; and a panel discussion on "A New Dimension for the Rabbis," headed by Dr. Morris N. Kertzer. , "•

Conferred with Mr. Ivan Reiner, Program Manager of Station WOR-TV, to discuss promotion plans for AJC's current TV series, "Unfinished Business, USA." 8. Arranged with Jack Gould, TV editor of the New York Times, to highlight WOR-TV "Unfinished Business, USA" series in Sunday Times TV page. 9. San Francisco will carry our "Unfinished Business, USA" TV series. 10. Arranged for book review of Louis Marshall: Champion of Liberty In Broadcast Music, Inc.'s "Book Parade." This publication is distributed to 2,000 local radio stations.

Arranged for screening of kinescope of "Studio One" program, "Walk Down the Hill," which we considered very effectively presented. CBS consulted us on the script of this program.

22. Working with Rabbi Kertzer on possibility of developing TV scripts for rabbis based on his book, "What Is a Jew?".
