How some individuals have come to use this medium has created a stir among parents and the mental health community. One such use has been the promotion of anorexia nervosa as a healthy lifestyle choice on Pro-Anorexia (Ana) websites. These have become controversial spaces due to their presumed influence on both the initiation and maintenance of anorexia nervosa. Despite growing concern regarding the contents of Pro-Ana websites, limited research has been conducted in this area resulting in a lack of awareness of the role, contents and unique perspective contained on these sites. Therefore the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how anorexia nervosa is alternatively portrayed on Pro-Ana websites and how this portrayal either maintains or challenges eating disordered symptomology. Thematic content analysis of the text contained on two of the most popular Pro-Ana websites yielded five major themes: perfection and control, pain and suffering, secrecy, exclusion and medical and psychological knowledge. The results suggested that there is a large discrepancy between the portrayal of anorexia nervosa on Pro-Ana websites as a healthy lifestyle choice and the current clinical perspective which views anorexia as a dangerous and fatal illness.

Here celebrities are cultural intermediaries as they give commodities ‘cultural personalities’ and perform across different media, linking different cultural spheres into an integrated whole. But, given the facts that who they advertise for and what they do or do not do have major financial implications for the corporations whose products they endorse, celebrities can also be said to be economic intermediaries.

Introduction The relation between culture and economy is, to say the least, tricky. It is one that has been exercising the minds of scholars in management, organisation and consumer studies, on the one hand, and of those in disciplines like sociology, cultural studies and anthropology, on the other. Yet, even though it is now well over two decades since Raymond Williams (1977: 136) noted that ‘large scale capitalist economic activity and cultural production are now inseparable’, we have not got that much further in our understandings of just how they are inseparable. This paper focuses on the activities of celebrities, and in particular of models, as a means of trying to bridge the conceptual gap between culture and economy.

The Celebrity Apprentice Premiere Recap: Tom Scharpling Shoots Fish in a Barrel By Tom Scharpling When the fine people at Vulture asked me to recap season eleven of The Celebrity Apprentice, the first thing I did was pick up the phone and call famed funnyman Paul F. Tompkins, who is currently doing a stellar job recapping American Idol for this very same website. Paul said that Idol was sometimes a challenge because there’s certain amount of redundancy in covering a singing competition. “You will not have that problem,” he predicted. “You’ll be shooting fish in a barrel.” And yes, recapping this show will be shooting fish in a barrel. Mentally ill fish. In a big glass barrel designed expressly for mentally ill fish. With a gun filled with mentally-ill-fish-killing bullets. I am well aware that the contestants appearing on Celebrity Apprentice are not doing the show against their will: This is not The Running Man. Or Rollerball. Or any of those movies in which people are forced to enter some sort of competition against their will. But there is something slimy about the whole thing. Unlike American Idol, which, underneath its gross plastic exterior, has some sort of purity at its core by asking, "Who is the best unknown singer in the United States?" Celebrity Apprentice exists to give the half-talented and once-famous another sliver of fame in exchange for publicly rubbing their face in a big, fat pile of shame. 1 Yes, I know that there are charities involved and it is truly great that some extremely deserving organizations will get both cash money and national exposure.
