He completed his PhD, which analyzed the transformation of cities into targets from interwar to Cold War, at the University of Sheffield in 2014. Before taking up the position at Lincoln, he was a fellow at the MECS Institute for Advanced Study, Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, He has published on air war and cities in Urban History and Contemporary European History. He is currently completing a book based on his PhD research, while developing a new project on disputed urban transformations in postwar UK cities. Abstract: In Belfast in the 1970s and 1980s, a modernist housing scheme became subject to multiple contested appropriations. Built between 1966 and 1972, the Divis Flats became a flashpoint in the violence of the Troubles, and a notorious space of danger, poverty, and decay. The structural and social failings of so many postwar system-built housing schemes were reiterated in Divis, as the rapid material decline of the complex echoed the descent into war in Belfast and Northern Ireland. Competing military and paramilitary strategies of violence refigured the topography of the flats, rendering the balcony walkways, narrow stairs, and lift shafts into an architecture of urban war. The residents viewed the complex as a concrete prison. They campaigned for the complete demolition of the flats, with protests which included attacking the architecture of the flats itself. -

Before War in Donbass (2014-present), which lead to 9,371 death up to June 3, 20161 it also can be called the bloodiest conflict, but unfortunately The Donbass War snatched from The Troubles “the victory palm” of this dreadful competition. The importance of this issue, however, is still essential and vital because of challenges Europe experience now. Both proxy war on Donbass and recent terrorist attacks had strained significantly the political atmosphere in Europe, showing that Europe is not safe anymore. In this conditions, it is necessary for us to try to assume, how far this insecurity and tensions might go and will the circumstances and the challenges of a international relations ignite the conflict in Northern Ireland again. It also makes sense for us to recognize that the Troubles was also a proxy war to a certain degree 23 Sources, used in this essay are mostly mass-media articles, human rights observers’ and international organizations reports, and surveys made by political scientists on this issue. -

Abstract 119 Brigade, 40th Division, had an unusual origin as a ‘left-over’ brigade of the Welsh Army Corps and was the only completely bantam formation outside 35th Division. This study investigates the formation’s national identity and demonstrates that it was indeed strongly ‘Welsh’ in more than name until 1918. New data on the social background of men and officers is added to that generated by earlier studies. The examination of the brigade’s actions on the Western Front challenges the widely held belief that there was an inherent problem with this and other bantam formations. The original make-up of the brigade is compared with its later forms when new and less efficient units were introduced. -

Apr 1964 - Border Incidents. - State of Emergency in Kenya North-Eastern Region. - Regional Elections. The continued unrest in the North-Eastern Region of Kenya and the activities of nomadic Somali bands of armed shiftas caused Mr. Kenyatta to call an urgent Cabinet meeting, also attended by Major-General Ian Freeland (G.O.C., British Land Forces, Kenya) and Mr. Richard Catling (Inspector-General of Police), at Gatundu on Dec. 25, 1963. After the meeting the Government proclaimed a state of emergency throughout the Region and set up a five-mile-deep prohibited zone along the Kenya-Somalia border, excluding the settlements of Mandera and El Wak. Although this was not known at the time of the Cabinet meeting, 50 armed Somali tribesmen had on that date raided the police post at Msabubu, near Galole on the River Tuna, one policeman, a policeman's wife, and a Pokomo tribesman helping the police being killed and four other policemen wounded: a number of Somalis were killed and injured. After this raid a delegation of anti-secessionists asked Mr. Kenyatta to be allowed to take the law into their own hands to deal with the raiding shifta gangs. Mr. T. P. Randle, the Region's Civil Secretary, reported that resentment against the raiders’ terrorism was growing. and that the chairman of the Northern Province People's Progressive Party—the main secessionist party—had withdrawn all support for the shiftas (whose leader was Ma’alim Mohamed Stamboul) and had promised to work for the party's objectives by constitutional means. -

Downloaded from The Omagh Bombing - A Medical Perspective Capt SJO Potter BSc (Hons), MB, ChB, RAMC RMO 4 Royal Irish Regiment, BFPO 804 Dr GE Carter MB, ChB, DRCOG GP Trainee SUMMARY: The bomb in Omagh on the 15th August 1998 was responsible for the largest loss of life of any single terrorist incident in the whole of the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland. However, the medical response to this tragedy provided an excellent opportunity for the civilian and military agencies to work together. As a consequence of this a number of lessons were drawn which are presented in the paper. Whatever the outcome of the peace process these lessons will have an important role in the future, since history would suggest that there is little possibility of the terrorist threat ever completely receding. (VBIED) The Good Friday Agreement heralded a new era for the small district general hospital - The Tyrone County. The people of Northern Ireland. It was with great belief in the Ulster Ballygawley Bus bombing in 1988 (8 dead) and the Teebane Referendum that they dared to look forward to peace. The massacre in 1992 (8 dead) had been the previous largest Canary Wharf, Thiepval Barracks and Manchester bombings atrocities in the area although there had also been many smaller which all occured during previous PIRA cease-fires provided shootings and bombings locally. -

There is much practical support available to both serving personnel and their families and veterans and their dependants. However, access to such support is often obscured by lack of detailed information or shrouded by information overload, to the extent that an individual in need may have trouble identifying exactly where to turn for help. This Handbook is intended to assist the whole Service community by clearly spelling out “who does what for whom” and by identifying local contact details. It is intended to be a reference document and to act as a sign-post to local agencies which, once contacted, can then follow up with support intervention as required. Stakeholders and gate-keepers are urged to use it if a member of the Service community in need comes to their attention. The Handbook is as comprehensive as possible and identifies the major support organisations available to the Service community in Northern Ireland, and especially to veterans and their dependants. -

Chapter 1 A Walk of Life Entering Catholic West Belfast n a Friday afternoon in September 2004, shortly before returning home from Omy ethnographic fieldwork, I took my video camera and filmed a walk from the city centre into Catholic West Belfast up to the Beechmount area, where I had lived and conducted much of my research. I had come to Catholic West Belfast fourteen months prior with the intention of learning about locally prevailing senses of ethnic identity. Yet I soon found out that virtually every local Catholic I talked to seemed to see him- or herself as ‘Irish’, and apparently expected other locals to do the same. My open questions such as ‘What ethnic or national identity do you have?’ at times even irritated my interlocutors, not so much, as I figured out, because they felt like I was contesting their sense of identity but, to the contrary, because the answer ‘Irish’ seemed so obvious. ‘What else could I be?’ was a rhetorical question I often encountered in such conversations, indicating to me that, for many, Irish identity went without saying. If that was the case, then what did being Irish mean to these people? What made somebody Irish, and where were local senses of Irishness to be found? Questions like these became the focus of my investigations and constitute the overall subject of this book. One obvious entry point for addressing such questions consisted in attending to the ways in which Irishness was locally represented. Listening to how locals talked about their Irishness, keeping an eye on public representations by organizations and the media, and explicitly asking people about their Irishness in informal conversations and formal interviews all constituted ways of approaching this topic.
