TRAIL OF GOVERNORS FOUNDATION 2017 ANNUAL REPORT he year 2017 was historic for the South Dakota Trail of Governors with the unveiling of four bronze statues as opposed to three in prior years. TGovs. Tom Berry, Leslie Jensen, Sigurd Anderson and Joe Foss were honored with the unveiling of life-size statues on June 16, 2017 at the Capitol Rotunda. “No other state honors their formers governors the way we do in South Dakota,” said Trail of Governors Foundation President Rick Jensen. “This is particularly remarkable since Pierre has the country’s second-smallest population for a state capital city. Despite that, this trail is a reality thanks to the generosity of our donors.” Governor family members and statue donors participated in the historic unveiling. Sculptors of the statues are John Lopez of Lemmon (Gov. Berry), James Michael Maher of Spearfish (Gov. Anderson), Lee Leuning of Sioux Falls and Sherri Treeby of Aberdeen (Gov. Foss), and James Van Nuys of Rapid City (Gov. Jensen). This was also the first year that the trail artists numbered four, with Van Nuys joining in the effort. The four newest statues were installed in September, expanding the Governor Joe Foss – 20th Governor of South Dakota M. Michael Rounds - 31st Governor of South Dakota trail to 19 statues. 2017 Trail of Governors Annual Report Gov. Tom Berry – 14th, 1933-1937 The primary donors for Gov. Berry’s statue are family and friends of the gov- ernor and First National Bank in Philip. Berry served from 1933 to 1937 as the state’s 14th governor. Artist Lopez’s concept of the governor features a hatchet in his hand, noting that Berry was known for carrying the tool as he campaigned for office, promising to cut the state’s budget. The bronze figure wears a cow- boy hat just as the governor from West River did, earning him the nickname of Cowboy Governor. Berry’s bronze is in the capital city’s downtown area on the corner of Pierre’s historic main street, Pierre Street and Dakota Avenue. Jensen’s statue was funded primarily by the governor’s family and friends and major trail supporters, Leroy and Charlene Foster. Jensen was the 15th governor, serving from 1937 to 1939. Jensen was sculpted by James Van Nuys and the governor is clad in a World War I uniform, acknowledging Jensen’s mil- itary service to his country and state. Van Nuys went to great lengths to find the correct uniform and accessories reflecting that era, including the hard-to-find military boots and spats. Jensen’s bronze likeness appropriately graces the front of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building on the Capitol Complex. Leslie Jensen - 15th Governor of South Dakota A vision to create a lasting legacy of South Dakota’s governors. 2017 Trail of Governors Annual Report Gov. Sigurd Anderson – 19th, 1951-1955 Major donors for Gov. Anderson’s statue are Leroy and Charlene Foster, Man- sour Lincoln Karim and Ruth Muriel Karim, and Mark and Glennis Zarecky. Anderson served South Dakota from 1951 to 1955 as the 19th governor. Artist Maher told guests at the unveiling about his search through the state’s archives to find photos and evidence to help him capture Anderson. One of the photos Maher stumbled across showed not only Gov. Anderson, but also Maher’s own mother in the background at an official event. Maher’s depiction of Anderson shows the governor in front of a 1950s era microphone while addressing his constituents. Anderson is fittingly placed in front of the Anderson building, named in his honor, and across the street from the Capitol. Sigurd Anderson - 19th Governor of South Dakota A vision to create a lasting legacy of South Dakota’s governors. 2017 Trail of Governors Annual Report Gov. Joe Foss – 20th, 1955-1959 Gov. Foss’s statue was funded primarily by Dr. Frank and Pamela Foss, friends and family of the governor, Farm Credit Services of America, and Chuck and Bonny Schroyer. Foss was the state’s 20th governor, in office from 1955 to 1959. Artists Leuning and Treeby portrayed Foss in his World War II flight suit, look- ing up at the skies as he had often done during his years of flying military planes while in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Air National Guard. Foss peers above Capitol Lake from his vantage point in front of his namesake Foss Building on the state’s Capitol Complex.
