171st Commencement Exercises May 28-30, 2021 The Significance of Place Take in the sights and sounds around you. This area has witnessed many momentous gatherings, marking notable life events. Around 1,400 years ago, long before Beloit College was founded, Native Americans gathered here for commemorative ceremonies. The Beloit College Mound Group, in which you are sitting, remains a sacred Native place. The Beloit College Mound Group is catalogued as a burial site and thus is pro- tected by state law. Awareness of Native heritage and values can also enhance mound preservation. This is where you come in: Help preserve the Beloit College mounds by treating them with respect. As you enjoy today’s celebration, please be mindful of the significance of this place and avoid walking or sitting on the mounds. —Drew Agnew’18 and AmySue Greiff’18 Friday, May 28, 2021 Virtual Commencement Celebration Welcome President Scott Bierman Commencement Address Introduced by Superior Murphy'21 Angela Moten Russell’99, Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, CUNA Mutual Group Conferring of Honorary Degree Angela Moten Russell’99 Presented by President Scott Bierman Special Awards Blue Skies Award - presented by Scott Bierman Martha Peterson Prize - presented by Scott Bierman The Class Address Students introduced by Scott Bierman “All You Need Is Love” presented by Erin Gallagher “Becoming a Leader” presented by Ana Kohout Closing Remarks President Scott Bierman 1 Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30, 2021 Scott Bierman, B.A., Ph.D. President of the College, presiding Musical Prelude Commencement Procession Please stand Pomp and Circumstance March, opus 39, no. 1 Sir Edward Elgar Welcome President Scott Bierman Conferring of Undergraduate Degrees Statement of Authorization Delivered by President Scott Bierman on behalf of the Chair of the Board of Trustees Dick Niemiec’65 Presentation of Candidates Provost and Dean of the College Eric Boynton Conferring of Degrees and Closing Remarks President Scott Bierman Recessional 2 Members of the audience are asked to remain near their seats until the procession has fully recessed and the ceremony is completed. Mark your calendars for the 2021 Beloiter Days: Reunion, Homecoming, Family & Friends Weekend October 1-3, 2021 3 Angela Moten Russell’99 Commencement Speaker Angela Moten Russell is the vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion at CUNA Mutual Group. The first to hold this position, she has shaped it by leading the development, direction, and implementation of CUNA’s short and long-term strategies and programs that support diver- sity, equity, and inclusion. Prior to joining CUNA in 2015, she served in various Wisconsin state government posts, including in former Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle’s administration, where she was appointed to a small team that created Wisconsin’s Department of Children and Families. She has held a variety of positions in public administration and pub- lic health, including serving as a health equity coordinator for Public Health Madison & Dane County and as community engagement lead for the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps Program at the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Her earlier career focus on public health began with a Beloit College biochemistry major and membership on the college’s AIDS education task force. One of a group of students who inspired the formation of the college’s Health and Society major, she completed an internship with Madison’s state health department that examined the mortality dispari- ties between Black and white women with breast cancer. Russell earned her master’s degree in population health sciences from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She serves on the board of the nonprofit organization JustDane, the Edgewood College board of trustees, and the External Advisory Board for the University of Wisconsin School of Business. She is a founder and the host of Black Oxygen, a podcast launched in 2020 that amplifies the voic- es of Wisconsin’s Black community. 4 2021 Degree Candidates BACHELOR OF ARTS Brahim Abraham Aich Business Economics Else Kristin Aarsheim Political Science Health and Society Chicago, Illinois Spanish Minor Minneapolis, Minnesota Galen Anton Alaks summa cum laude Lucy Joanna Abrams Music summa cum laude Art History Minor Anthropology Brookfield, Illinois Dance Minor Brookline, Massachusetts Salma Mohammad Ali summa cum laude Emma Richard Adams Mathematics cum laude Quantitative Economics History Dhaka, Bangladesh Museum Studies Minor Osceola, Wisconsin Shivangi Ambardar summa cum laude Philip Bartholomew Adrian Mathematics cum laude Quantitative Economics Environmental Geology New Delhi, India Sociology Milwaukee, Wisconsin Carson Hom Armstrong Business Economics Santiago Ramon Aguilar Creative Writing Business Economics Piedmont, California Albuquerque, New Mexico Maria G.
