A couple of grand Charolais steers (25m) from the Shervington Family, Hittisleigh reached £1150 closely followed by a smart South Devon steer (20m) from Rob & Sue Greep, Cornwood at £1135, the latter also saw tremendous red Limousin steers (18m) make £1110.     VOLUME 2 OF 2 CIVILIAN EVACUATION TO DEVON IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR Submitted by S.J. HESS as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History, 2006 CHAPTER SEVEN The ‘slum mentality’ of the evacuee – the myth challenged This Chapter firstly assesses Devon’s pre-war school medical service. Discussion then focuses on four crucial health issues which became problematic during evacuation, namely dirty habits, pediculosis (head lice), enuresis (bedwetting) and skin infections. The development of hostels for evacuees deemed unsuitable for billeting on arrival is also discussed. These health issues generated much adverse publicity, particularly during the first evacuation wave, and led to the persistent myth that evacuees were dirty, ill-trained and that they introduced pediculosis and skin infections into reception areas. Local documentary archive material is used to examine Devon’s experience and support the argument that generalised and exaggerated adverse publicity fostered a false stereotype. The largest number of evacuee children came to Devon in 1940 at a time when medical checks were improved, both in evacuation and reception areas. In addition the County already had an established degree of pediculosis and skin infections before evacuation. No evidence of a public or official outcry has been found locally to compare with reports emanating from some reception areas, particularly those areas receiving children from northern evacuation areas such as Merseyside.1 This variance with the ‘received’ version of events highlights the importance of local research. 1 The percentage of Merseyside children suffering from pediculosis, who were evacuated to areas such as Herefordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire, was between 22-50% compared with children from London where the percentage ranged from 8-35%.

    Report on beetles (Coleoptera) and a woodwasp recorded from the Dartington Hall Estate, 2018 by Dr Martin Luff 1. Introduction and Methods The majority of beetle recording in 2018 was again concentrated on Berryman’s Marsh. Three bottle traps were used throughout the season from April to October, suspended above several of the dead wood habitat piles in the marsh. Another trap was also hung over a large pile of logs and woody brash in Mary Bartlett’s garden at 1, Martins. In the autumn, a similar trap was put on one of the large heaps of mowings left at the margin of Berryman’s Marsh after it was cut. The dry summer exposed a large area of mud around the main pond on Queen’s Marsh; this was colonised by a range of specialist beetle species that were sampled by searching and sieving on June 28th. Water beetles were also trapped in the first pond on Berryman’s Marsh in October using baited bottle traps. On June 26th, I accompanied Mike Newby and Vicky Churchill to Redlake Meadow and Whitely Field, for a first look at sites outside the core estate. 2. Results It was another very satisfactory season. The 245 beetle species recorded (28 more than in 2017) was the highest annual total since I started recording here. Of these, 67 (27.3%) were additions to the Dartington list: one is Nationally Rare (NR), formerly classified as Red Data Book (RDB) and eleven are Nationally Scarce (NS), formerly called Nationally Notable. Some interesting results from each area are summarised below.
