Conway Collection. - 1933 - 1995. M. of statistical records, correspondence, textual material and photographs. Collection contains the correspondence, photographs, and most particularly the accumulated statistics about ice hockey teams, players and leagues, that were put together by Mr. Conway through out most of his lifetime. There is material from other collectors included here too, the most prominent of this material is Frank Buckland's material. These files are open to all qualified researchers. Titles are taken from contents. Location: see appendices. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Patrick J. Conway [ca 1922 - 19941 was a life long resident of Syracuse NY He graduated from Niagara University and earned a Masters Degree from Syracuse University. Over the years, Mr. Conway was a lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War Two, an elementary School teacher and when he retired in 1984, an auditor in the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Ever since his mother gave him a hockey picture when he was ten years old, Mr. Conway has collected sports material. His particular interest was hockey statistics and he traveled throughout Canada and most of the United States in search of material. He was a member of the Society for lntemational Hockey Research in Kingston and it is through this connection that his fine collection has come to the International Ice Hockey Museum in Kingston. Mr. Conway is survived by his wife, the former Catherine McHale; two sons, Kevin and Brian both of Syracuse and three daughters Patricia Black of Syracuse, Nancy Micelli of Chandler, Ariz., Mary Jo Conway Munger of Phoenix, Oswego County and nine grandchildren. CUSTODIAL HISTORY The Patrick J. Conway Collection came to the International Hockey Museum (then International Ice Hockey Federation Museum) in Kingston, Ontario, on dune 9, 1995. Jt was a gift to the museum from Mr. Conway's Family. Since the material had been in Mr. Conway's care until he died on Oct. 12, 1995, it arrived at the museum much as the collector left it when he died. The various series used here are substantially as Mr. Conway established them and except for transferring to clean new legal size file folders and new boxes, and relabelling that is necessary for preservation, the collection remains much as he kept it. When ever possible Mr. Conway's original labels and orders have been maintained. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Patrick J. Conway Collection consists of textual records and photographs. The inclusive dates are 1900 to 1994. Taken together these form a detailed record of the sport of ice hockey in North America. The greatest amount of material is statistical but there are also supporting documents and material such as pictures, guides, clippings and the correspondence that went into building this collection. Included here also are other collectors material such as Frank Buckland's History of the OHA. ACCESS THIS COLLECTION IS OPEN TO ALL QUALIFIED RESEARCHERS. Series Contains general correspoizdence with Ed Evans, retired Winnqxg man. Correspondence is of personal nature with many comments on collection of hockey player information. Also iizcludes hockey related newspaper clippings from Winnipeg Free Press regarding. Clippings of interest included 72 Summit Series and founding of WHA. Series is open to all users, however copyright provisions apply to correspondence and newspaper clippings. Please see archivist for assistance. Titles taken from chronological arrangement of letters. Location: see appendix A for file list. Series 2: General Correspondence. Series contains letters spanning many decades. The subject of correspondence was hockey and hockey players e.g. biographical information on players, dealing with Conway's quest to acquire biographical information on some 5 000 players. In many instances the original "fact sheet" accoinpanies the letter. The correspondence has been removed from envelopes and placed in chronological order. Location: see appendix A for file list. Series 3: Correspondence (Returned to Sender). Series contains original correspondence that had been sent back "return to sender". Letters represent unsuccessful attempts by Mr. Conway to obtain biographical information on players. When ever possible, envelopes accompany correspondence. Series contains correspondence with short lived and now defunct World Hockey Association. Part of Mr. Conway's pursuit of biographical information on hockey players. The correspondence takes the form of rep1 ies to request for player information from a number of clubs. Letters are accompanied by envelopes when ever possible, since envelopes often carry team logos. Series is open to all users, however copyright provisions do apply to correspondence. This series is broken down by organization and when ever possible broken down again chronologically. Whenever possible original envelopes accompany letters because envelopes often have team logos. Series consists of correspondence with NHL clubs (Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Minnesota North Stars, L.A Kings, Oakland Seals, Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Quebec Nordiques) and is divided into teams then chronologically.
