Postmodernism has led to an increasingly self-focused individualism in corporate worship which overvalues personal experience and undervalues the communal aspect of corporate worship. Despite much discussion concerning postmodern generations, the influence of postmodern thought upon the rise of corporate individualism in worship has yet to be examined. The purpose of this qualitative, historical study is to examine the factors that have led to the rise of corporate individualism in worship, the indications of corporate individualism in worship, and the ways in which corporate individualism has affected worship practice in evangelical churches. The rising focus on individualism in corporate worship is redefining what it means to worship in community. This study is important for worship leaders and pastors as they make decisions about song selection, language use, and worship environment. Additionally, this study is important to church members as it addresses subjects that affect their participation in worship, connection with other worshipers, and theological understandings. Every church must decide how they will address this societal change in order to reach present and future generations. This study could benefit the twenty-first century church in understanding how and why worship practices have changed with this cultural shift and determine if there needs to be a course correction. Further, this study could encourage further research into effects of corporate individualism on church architecture, liturgical structures, and worship technology. Due to the genre’s flexible nature, many Christian artists over the years have used vague imagery and secular lyrical content to find favor among mainstream outlets. This study examined the most recent ten-year period of CCM to determine its ability to cross over into the mainstream music scene, while also assessing the impact of its lyrical content and genre on the probability of reaching such mainstream success. For the years 2008-2018, Billboard data were collected for every Christian song on the Hot 100, Hot Rock Songs, or Hot Country Songs in order to detect any noticeable trend regarding the rise or fall of CCM; each song then was coded for theological language. No obvious trend emerged regarding the mainstream success of CCM as a whole, but the genre of Rock was found to possess the greatest degree of mainstream success. Rock also, however, was shown to have a very low tolerance for theological language, contrasted with the high tolerance of Country.

After decades of debate, the Council of Trent is finally drawing to a close. The last item on the agenda: Should this new-fangled style of music called polyphony—music in which several different voice parts are heard simultaneously—be allowed in worship? The discussion soon unravels into a heated dispute. One side is all for the latest, popular styles, with none of this old, monotonous monophonic music. The other side won’t stand for change. After all, if chant was good enough for Pope Gregory and all the saints, then, by Jesu, it should be good enough for us! The deliberations are about to get ugly when a timid young man by the name of Giovanni Pierluigi from the town of Palestrina reluctantly offers for consideration his latest polyphonic work. It’s the Missa Papae Marcelli, which will turn out to be Palestrina’s most famous work. Not only is it utterly gorgeous but it’s also so skillfully written that you can understand every single syllable. The Council relents, decides that polyphony is not the work of the devil, and the history of Western music as we know it—from Bach to the Beatles—is assured. It would be a great story if it were true. Hans Pfitzner (1869-1949) portrayed it this way in his obscure 1917 opera, Palestrina.
