CHS SWIMMING Columbia dives in with new coach By ZACH ABOLVERDI [email protected]

Lindsay Brinkley is ready to return to her old stomping grounds, although she won’t be get- ting in the pool this time around. The former Columbia swimmer, who competed under her maiden name Lee from 2010-13, is back at her alma mater after being hired as the head coach in May. She’s still getting her feet wet. “I didn’t have a lot of them here for summer, so this month has really been my first opportunity to work with these kids,” Brinkley said. “We started two weeks ago for practice and they have been doing very well. “We’re working with them as hard as we can as coaches and pushing them through training. We have a wide variety of athletes and we’re strong at every stroke. So we’re really excited to grow this team and build it up.” The Tigers lost four seniors and regional qual- ifiers from last season in Evan Conklin, Jacob Photos by SHELBY CONKLIN/Special to the Reporter Boone, Brendan Short Haden Slater (left) and Ally Mitchell (right) are Columbia’s returning seniors and Chandler Smith, but still boast several upper- classmen on their boys team. Brinkley singled out seniors Hayden Slater and Alex Jewett as key returners. “We have an older group of boys this year, only one freshman,” Brinkley said. “We’re kind of building as a program, but Hayden is one of our boys that swam all four years and stuck it out. Alex Jewett as well. Both of them came back this season and that was big for us. “They really show that true seniority leadership and support everybody on the team, not just fresh- men or boys or girls. And they’re very helpful to Heather (Touchton) and I as coaches.” The Columbia girls swim team is led by senior Ally Mitchell and junior Mackenzie Conkin, who was the only girls swim- mer to make regionals in 2018. Delaney Williams also makes her return after swimming for the Tigers as a freshman. “Can’t wait to see what we get from our two seniors girls, Ally and Alex Jewett (left) and Mackenzie Conklin (right) are Columbia’s returning juniors. Delaney,” Brinkley said. “Delaney swam in 2016 and came back to join. I’m really excited to work with Delaney and pull that potential out of her.” Brinkley also needs to pull more students into the pool. She only has 12 swimmers on the roster right now, but is confident her numbers will grow over time. “We have a really small team, but we like what we have,” she said. “Just want to get them prepared for districts and regionals, and hopefully we’ll have a cou- ple go to state. “I’m excited to work with our freshman girls and bring them up in the sport. And I really hope to get our numbers up and show our students what a fun sport swim- ming can be.” Columbia’s Alex Jewitt (left) and Ally Mitchell (right) compete during meets last season. FWHS VOLLEYBALL Lady Indians trusting Conner more in Year 2

FORT WHITE — When Fort White volleyball coach Deanna Conner watches practice now, her team looks much better than it did during her inaugural season with the Indians. Conner took over the program in 2018 and, like many first-year coaches, struggled getting her play- ers to buy in right away. “It’s hard coming in as a new coach and them not knowing who you are,” Conner said. “With the changes being made, it took them awhile to realize they’re capable of things that they didn’t think they were able to do. “They’ve really come together this year.
