  • 394 GLOSSARY Acid Jazz Late 1980S and 1990S
GLOSSARY Acid Jazz Late 1980s and 1990s trend where “London fashion victims created their own early seventies-infatuated bohemia by copying jazz-funk records of the era note by note.”1 Associated with DJ Giles Peterson, acid jazz combined jazz and funk influence with electronica to produce a “danceable” version of jazz. Some of the most prominent British artists associated with acid jazz include are the band 4Hero, producer Ronny Jordan, and the James Taylor Quartet (the last of which at one point included Nitin Sawhney.) Ambient Music intended to create a particular atmosphere. Brian Eno, considered a pioneer of the genre, notes, “One of the most important differences between ambient music and nearly any other kind of pop music is that it doesn’t have a narrative structure at all, there are no words, and there isn’t an attempt to make a story of some kind.”2 Ambient music often substitutes distinct melodies and rhythmic patterns for a wash of sound. Some prominent British artists during the 1990s include The Orb, KLF, Mixmaster Morris and Aphex Twin. Bhangra Bhangra originated as a male folk dance in Punjab to accompany the harvest festival, Baisakhi. It is still performed as a folk dance and may be identified by its characteristic swinging rhythm played on the dhol and dholki, double-sided barrel drums. From the late 1970s onwards, Punjabi immigrants in Britain began to fuse with electronic dance styles including house music and later hip-hop.3 These styles produced a distinct genre of music that was recognized as one of the first prominent examples of British Asian youth culture.

This time I decided to present the darker side of classic drum and bass. Especially Goldie’s tracks which were often shown in the TV, but also they where available at soundtracks for few movies (The Jackal, Spawn). We borrowed these soundtracks on the cassettes from our high school friends and played for most of the time. I also decided to play few PC demo scene tunes made by artists connected which one of the biggest drum & bass and trip hop netlabels at that time – Tokyo Dawn Records. It is active still but it changed a lot providing mostly jazz, funk, soul, R&B style tunes.

  • Hermeneutics of Suspicion: Paranoia and the Technological Sublime in Drum and Bass Music by Dale Chapman Mount Allison University
ECHO: a music-centered journal www.echo.ucla.edu Volume 5 Issue 2 (Fall 2003) Hermeneutics of Suspicion: Paranoia and the Technological Sublime in Drum and Bass Music by Dale Chapman Mount Allison University 1. Few recent films, independent or otherwise, approach the degree of taut, visceral intensity generated by the movie ! (Daniel Aronovsky, 1998). With its story of a brilliant mathematician haunted by the elusive specter of a powerful equation—an equation charged with explaining the most unpredictable patterns in our universe—! taps into the heady mixture of euphoria and paranoia that characterizes its cultural moment. One of the most intense moments in the film, though, takes place before this story even gets properly under way. The title sequence of ! captures an intense synergy between aural and visual manipulation: as the movie begins, a nebulous, sustained texture provides a musical extension of the mute signifier “!” which is presented to us in its enigmatic Greek spelling. Through this lens, the concept of pi seems to take on a quality of abstraction, as something that can be labeled by a single, opaque symbol. As the tentative first beats of the theme’s breakbeat groove come in, however, the true significance of “pi” becomes fleshed out: firstly through the 3.14 that constitutes the layperson’s understanding of pi, then in terms of the infinite string of digits that make up the larger totality of this irrational number. The visual representation of this string is immensely powerful, as the digits are scrolled upwards far too quickly for the viewer to grasp. 2.

The History of Rock Music - The Nineties The History of Rock Music: 1995-2001 Drum'n'bass, trip-hop, glitch music History of Rock Music | 1955-66 | 1967-69 | 1970-75 | 1976-89 | The early 1990s | The late 1990s | The 2000s | Alpha index Musicians of 1955-66 | 1967-69 | 1970-76 | 1977-89 | 1990s in the US | 1990s outside the US | 2000s Back to the main Music page (Copyright © 2009 Piero Scaruffi) Drum'n'Bass (These are excerpts from my book "A History of Rock and Dance Music") Jungle TM, ®, Copyright © 2005 Piero Scaruffi All rights reserved. Dance music of the 1990s largely rejected the simple, jovial, hedonistic approach to body movement that had ruled since James Brown invented funk music in the 1960s. Disco, techno and house had simply imported new technologies (both for rhythm and arrangements) into the paradigm of funk. The 1990s continued that process, but further removing the "joy" of dancing from the beats, and, in fact, replacing it with fits of acute neurosis. One of the most important ideas to come out of Britain was "jungle" or "drum'n'bass", a syncopated, polyrhythmic and frantic variant of house, a fusion of hip-hop and techno that relied on extremely fast drum-machines, epileptic breakbeats and huge bass lines. Precursors of jungle included, in the USA, Bug In The Bassbin (1989), the rhythmic workout of Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra, and, in Britain, Perfecto's Baz De Conga (1989). The experiments of Plaid and Meat Beat Manifesto also laid the foundations of jungle. Jungle saw the light in 1992 in London with tracks such as Leakage Trip's Psychotronic, Nebula II's Flatliners and Johnny Jungle's Johnny, followed by Andy C's Valley Of The Shadows (1993) and Ed Rush's Bloodclot Attack (1993), while Omni Trio's Renegade Snares (1993) and especially LTJ Bukem's Music (1993) invented "ambient jungle" (a calmer, introverted version of that hyperkinetic dance music).
