Xavier Newsletter #65 (PDF)
NEWSLETTER #65 - 2008-09 XAVIER CONDITIONING All summer long, we point towards one small test of conditioning that occurs the first Friday of the school year...the mile run. This mile will be the one and only time each year we run on a track. Based on their position, players are expected to meet a certain time for this mile. If they do not meet this time, they are expected to do two weeks of extra conditioning prior to the start of full team conditioning. We stress the importance of “ALL YEAR CONDITIONING”. The culture we have built does not allow for a player to view summer as “time off” or an opportunity to scale back. This test serves as the ultimate barometer of that. In the past four years of using this test, we have had no more than one player per year miss their time. The following are the times we point to for each position group: GUARDS - 5:25 FORWARDS - 5:40 POSTS - 6:00 Xavier University - Men's Basketball - 3800 Victory Parkway - Cintas Center - Cincinnati, OH 45207 - (513) 745-3417 - (887) WE ARE XU BASKETBALL THOUGHTS ALVIN GENTRY “Toughest thing in the NBA to guard is screen and flare with a good player. Pick and roll is more limited in today’s NBA. Set ballscreens with a shooter.” “In transition, players tend to run back into the lane on defense. It is important for guards to be more man conscious in transition – ‘stay attached to man’”. “Very difficult to trap pick-n-rolls, guards are too good off of the dribble, plus low post player “punches” in middle of lane under goal which means the rotations are difficult.” “Choose 2 or 3 things defensively and get good at them.” “The best defensive teams in the NBA defensively rebound, defend and are simple with their rotations (i.e.: Knicks, Heat), also very physical and consequently are in every game.” “Don’t let great players catch the ball.” JEFF VAN GUNDY “I didn’t like two-a-days. -
