LOUISE RALSTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Louise Ralston first attended the Ottawa Jazz Festival in 1997 and immediately became a passionate jazz devotee and a staple of the OJF audience. Louise loved attending OJF concerts and her warm, exuberant smile lit up every venue she graced. Louise passed away in July 2011 at the age of 56 following a courageous battle with lymphoma. This scholarship has been established in her honour to support the development of young jazz artists from Western Canada.

BOURSE D’ÉTUDES COMMÉMORATIVE LOUISE RALSTON Louise Ralston assiste pour la première fois au Festival en 1997 et devient immédiatement une fervente passionnée du jazz et une habituée du FJO. Louise aimait aller aux concerts du FJO; son sourire chaleureux et exubérant illuminait chaque prestation qu’elle voyait.

Louise a rendu l’âme en juillet 2011 à 56 ans au terme d’un courageux combat contre le lymphome. La bourse d’études a été établie en son honneur pour appuyer le développement des jeunes artistes de jazz de l’Ouest du Canada.

On Saturday, Sept 6th, 2014 the Jazz Festival lost one of its longest serving volunteers, Gary Clay. He was a long serving Director on the Board of Directors, he worked tirelessly designing and organizing box office control systems, and shared his vast knowledge and passionate love for jazz with everybody he knew.

Amsterdam’s Tin Men and the Telephone may be as much a continually evolving experience as a musical group, though they are certainly accomplished in musicianship and improvisation. But to call them simply musicians is to do them a fundamental injustice. Any set by the group will involve appeals to the audience to participate in the set via WiFi; there will be found sounds and images and media samples reproducing bizarre details of everyday life responded to in real time by the group. In the 21 years since then, the band has established itself as one of the most creative large ensembles in Europe, melding influences as diverse as Charles Mingus and Tortoise.
