It is part of Balkan Mountains on the territory of Balkan Peninsula in Southern Europe. As Received: 13 May 2017 a result of this study in Chepan Mountain on the territory of only 25 Final Accepted: 15 June 2017 km2 were found 784 species of wild vascular plants from 378 genera Published: July 2017 and 84 families. Such amazing biodiversity can be found in Southern Europe only. The floristic analysis indicates that the most of the Key words:- families and the genera are represented by a small number of inferior Chepan Mountain, floristic analysis, taxa. The hemicryptophytes dominate among the life forms with vascular plants 53.32%. The biological types are represented mainly by perennial herbaceous plants (59.57%). In the flora of the Mountain there are 49 floristic elements. The most of the species are European-Asiatic floristic elements (14.54%), followed by European-Mediterranean floristic elements (13.78%) and subMediterranean floristic elements (13.52%). Among the vascular plants, there are 26 Balkan endemic species, 4 Bulgarian endemic species and 26 relic species. The species with protection statute are 66 species. The anthropophytes among the vascular plants are 390 species (49.74%). -

Each flower seems to terminate a lateral axis. These features have led to a controversy about the nature of the inflorescence unit, particularly whether it is monopodial or sympodial. It was often seen as a pseu- dospikelet composed of a succession of lateral axes, each subtended by the prophyll of the previous axis, as in a rhipidium. -

The broad recognition of its positive effects on the longevity of Mediterranean populations also led to the adoption of this diet in other regions of the world, and scientific interest focused on revealing its health effects. MD is not only linked with eating specific nutritional food products but also with social, religious, environmental, and cultural aspects, thus representing a healthy lifestyle in general. However, modern lifestyles adhere to less healthy diets, alienating people from their heritage. Therefore, considering the increasing evidence of the beneficial health effects of adherence to the MD and the ongoing transitions in consumers’ behavior, the present review focuses on updating the scientific knowledge regarding this diet and its relevance to agrobiodiversity. -

Footprint Ecology / CCW. 1 Summary It is increasingly recognised that recreational access to the countryside has a wide range of benefits, such as positive effects on health and well-being, economic benefits and an enhanced understanding of and connection with the natural environment. There are also negative effects of access, however, as people’s presence in the countryside can impact on the nature conservation interest of sites. This report reviews these potential impacts to the Welsh countryside, and we go on to discuss how such impacts could be mapped across the entirety of Wales. Such a map (or series of maps) would provide a tool for policy makers, planners and access managers, highlighting areas of the countryside particularly sensitive to access and potentially guiding the location and provision of access infrastructure, housing etc. We structure the review according to four main types of impacts: contamination, damage, fire and disturbance. Contamination includes impacts such as litter, nutrient enrichment and the spread of exotic species. Within the section on damage we consider harvesting and the impacts of footfall on vegetation and erosion of substrates. The fire section addresses the impacts of fire (accidental or arson) on animals, plant communities and the soil. Disturbance is typically the unintentional consequences of people’s presence, sometimes leading to animals avoiding particular areas and impacts on breeding success, survival etc. We review the effects of disturbance to mammals, birds, herptiles and invertebrates and also consider direct mortality, for example trampling of nests or deliberate killing of reptiles. -

Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) MONTEZUMA-DE-CARVALHO * Botanical Institute, University of Coimbra INTRODUCTION NITROUS oxide (laughing gas, N20) has been found to induce c-mitosis in root tips of Pisum sativum at atmos- pheric pressure (ÕSTERGREN, 1944) and in Allium cepa at a pressure of six atmospheres (PERGUSON et al., 1950). Based on this c-effect N20 has been applied, by several authors, to zygotes at the time of its first cleavage in order to obtain polyploid plants (ÕSTERGREN, 1955 in Crepis capilla- ris; NYGREN, 1955 in Melandrium; ÕSTERGREN, 1957 in Pha- laris; KIHARA and TSUNEWAKI, 1960 in Triticum; ZEILING and SCHOUTEN, 1966 in Tulipa). It has also been shown that N20 readily induces, under pressure, c-mitosis in the pollen tubes in styles (MONTEZUMA-DE-CARVALHO, 1967). As far as we know no Work has been done on the effects of N20 on meiosis. In the present paper we describe some results that demonstrate that this gas can drastically change the course of meiosis by its property of spindle inhibition (c-effect). -

IL GENERE ACINOS Famiglia Lamiaceae (o Labiatae) Acinos L. fu classificato da Linneo nel 1753. Il nome generico Acinos è preso dal latino ăcĭnǒs (usato da Plinio per riferirsi a una qualità di basilico o a erba aromatica in generale) a sua volta derivato dal greco ακιυος. Il termine greco si riferiva alla pianta di timo e, per la somiglianza tra i due generi, Linneo chiamò l’Acinos alpinus con il nome Tymus alpinus. Il genere Acinos comprende una decina di specie legnose annuali o perenni, ma di corta vita, originarie del sud-Europa e dell’Asia occidentale. Hanno dimensioni ridotte non raggiungendo mezzo metro di altezza. ACINOS ALPINUS Acinos alpinus (L.) BRIE & POMEGRANATE PICKLED ONION BURGER INGREDIENTS PICKLED RED ONIONS 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced ½ cup apple cider vinegar ½ cup warm water ¼ cup Monin Pomegranate Syrup 1 ½ teaspoons Kosher salt BURGERS 1 ½ pounds 80%-lean ground beef chuck 2 tbsp. olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 4 burger buns 2 tbsp. butter, melted 12 oz. brie, sliced thick 1 cup mayonnaise GLASSWARE 16 Culinary PREPARATION 1. PICKLED RED ONIONS 2. Combine vinegar, water, Monin Pomegranate Syrup, and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk together until salt is fully dissolved. 3. Place onions in a jar or bowl. 4. Pour vinegar mixture over the onions and let sit at room temperature for at least 1 hour. (If timing allows, cover jar or bowl and place in refrigerator for 1 day to let flavors fully develop.) 5. Pickled onions will last for a few weeks stored in the refrigerator. 6. BURGERS 7. Prepare grill or flat grill for medium-high heat. 8. Form ground beef into four 6-ounce patties on baking sheet lined with waxed paper. Fatten patties so they are slightly larger than diameter of buns. Drizzle patties with a little oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. 9. Grill patties, oiled-side-down, until browned on bottom, about 3 minutes. Turn patties over and top with cheese. Cook 3 to 4 minutes longer for medium-rare doneness. If necessary, close grill to help melt cheese. 10. Brush cut sides of buns lightly with butter and grill, oiled-side-down, until lightly toasted, about 1 minute.
